A 6-yr-old male Vancouver Island marmot (Marmota vancouverensis) presented for poor hibernation, weight loss, and symmetric trunk alopecia. An abdominal interstitial cell tumor was identified and surgically removed. Serum levels of estrogen were markedly elevated before surgery and decreased after tumor removal, indicating that the tumor had been functionally secretory. An 11-year-old cat with a retained testis was presented with a chronic history of dysuria and bladder atony. Medical therapy failed to alleviate the clinical signs. A 26-year-old African female presented with primary amenorrhoea and genital abnormalities. She had the physical stigmata of Turner's syndrome and a 45, X karyotype. Severe masculinization of the external genitalia, apparently present from birth, was present and a laparotomy revealed a hilus-cell tumour of the right streak gonad. Clitoridectomy and vaginoplasty were performed but subsequent oestrogen therapy failed to produce breast development.

A new case of leydigioma, seen in a young adult, poses the problem of the long term prognosis of an apparently benign tumour of this type. The usefulness of routine complementary carcinological therapy associating radio-surgery and immunotherapy is discussed. In fact, such treatment was rejected in favour of strict surveillance, possible in a cooperative subject, involving clinical examination every three months and endocrine studies and a chest X-ray every 2 months.

We report a 76-year-old woman with a virilization syndrome characterized by progressive androgenic alopecia, clitoris enlargement and hirsutism predominating in the face. Plasma testosterone was 711 ng/dl. Magnetic resonance imaging showed slightly enlarged ovaries with a cyst in the left. A bilateral oophorectomy was performed, demonstrating the presence of a Leydig cell hilar tumor in the right ovary. The patient had a good postoperative evolution with reduction of androgen levels and reversion of alopecia.

An ovarian tumour of mixed thecomatous and lipid cell structure is described and the clinical and pathological features of this and eleven previously reported cases are reviewed. Functionally the tumours resemble lipid cell tumours in being mainly androgenic and are similar in size range and age incidence to the 'adrenal' type. Three tumours however contained hilus (Leydig) cells with Reinke crystalloids. Supporting cells (Sertoli and granulosa) and steroidogenic cells (Leydig and theca-interstitium) are two major somatic cell types in mammalian gonads, but the mechanisms that control their differentiation during gonad development remain elusive. Thyroid hormones act on testis in multiple ways and exert their effect on different cell types, including Leydig and Sertoli cells, and germ cells.
