Keloids are scars that grow abnormally due to excessive extracellular matrix production by fibroblasts and increased angiogenesis. Chronic tension is implicated in their growth, but the exact pathology remains unclear. This study investigated the increased expression of molecules responsible for sensing pressure in keloids compared with lymphedema, which is also a non-tumorous fibroproliferative disease caused by another etiology. Higher expression levels of COL1A2, PIEZO2, and POSTN were observed in the keloid group compared with the lymphedema group. PIEZO2 expression levels showed a strong

BACKGROUND: Lower limb swelling presents a diagnostic challenge with diverse causes, including well-known issues like venous insufficiency and lymphedema, and less-understood conditions like lipedema. Lipedema, involving abnormal fat accumulation in the lower extremities, is frequently misdiagnosed, posing challenges for affected individuals. This research aimed to report and analyze the clinical features of patients presenting with the complaint of lipedema.
METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in Saudi Arabia from April to November 2023, involving adult patients from

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary lymphangiomatosis (PL) is an ultrarare disease characterized by diffuse infiltration of the lung, pleura and/or mediastinum by abnormal lymphatic proliferation. Consented diagnostic or treatment approaches are not established. We therefore aimed to collect data on diagnostics and treatments in a cohort of patients with PL from a tertiary center for rare lung diseases.
METHODS: Clinical, radiological and outcome data from PL patients were collected retrospectively.
RESULTS: 12 patients were diagnosed between 1996 and 2022 in our center. PL was diagnosed more commonly in

Malignancies and other diseases may spread by multiple pathways, including direct extension, hematogenous spread, or via lymphatic vessels. A less-well-understood route is the peripheral nervous system, which is known as perineural spread (PNS). In addition to accounting for pain and other neurologic symptoms, PNS affects both disease prognosis and management. Although PNS is commonly discussed in relation to head and neck tumors, there is emerging data regarding PNS in abdominopelvic malignancies and other conditions such as endometriosis. Due to improved contrast and spatial resolution, peri

Extracranial vascular malformations are abnormal formations of blood vessels located outside the brain (extracranial) that develop during fetal development. They are caused by errors in the formation of blood vessels in the embryo and can affect various parts of the body, such as the head, neck, face, and other regions. Some malformations may be asymptomatic and only require monitoring, while others may cause significant health issues or cosmetic concerns and may need medical intervention. There are very few studies have investigated the nationwide incidence and quantitative mortality of vascu

Background: Lipedema of lower limbs is characterized by bilateral accumulations of excess adipose tissue starting from the ankle to the hips and buttocks. The studies with lymphoscintigraphy (LSC) and magnetic resonance (MR) lymphography show altered transport index and enlarged lymphatic vessels (LVs). Our studies aimed to investigate the superficial lymph flow, water accumulation, skin and subcutaneous tissue elasticity, and the possibility of using this information to diagnose lipedema. Methods and Results: Fifty patients with lipedema and 50 control subjects (women) were included. The Indo

BACKGROUND: Leptomeningeal contrast enhancement (LMCE) has previously shown potential to be an indirect marker for leptomeningeal inflammation in multiple sclerosis (MS). Dura mater (DME), inclusive falx cerebri (FCE) enhancement and meningeal vessel wall enhancement (VWE) represent two other meningeal enhancement patterns in MS that have not been extensively studied.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the frequency of LMCE, DME/FCE and VWE in patients with MS and their associations with demographic, clinical and MRI characteristics in a longitudinal retrospective study.
METHODS: 217 MS patients (19

BACKGROUND: Alveolar capillary dysplasia with misalignment of pulmonary veins (ACD/MPV) is a rare disorder of pulmonary vascular abnormality with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn. The symptom usually presents within hours after birth, leading to an early demise. Heterozygous de novo point mutations and genomic deletions of the FOXF1 (forkhead box F1) gene or its upstream enhancer have been identified in most patients with ACD/MPV. Most cases of ACD/MPV are sporadic; however, familial cases are also reported in 10% of patients.

Paraneoplastic syndromes are a group of rare disorders that can be triggered by an abnormal immune response to proteins from tumors of the lung, ovary, lymphatics, or breast. Paraneoplastic clinical syndromes affect < 1% of patients with cancer; however, the frequency of subclinical levels of paraneoplastic autoantibodies in asymptomatic patients with cancer is unknown. Numerous studies have reported that ovarian cancer patients show signs of paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (PNSs) before or after their cancers are diagnosed. PNSs arise from a tumor-elicited immune response against oncone

The brain is a complex system that requires continual regulation of parenchymal pressure, osmolarity, and waste removal for optimal function; despite this, human brain lacks any obvious extension of lymphatic circulation for moderating fluid and waste regulation. We recapitulate herein a recent analysis of proteinaceous waste deposition in the human brain, its observed route of clearance, and the implications of abnormal accumulation along this clearance pathway as a potential mechanism of neurological diseases. This study uncovered an analogous staining pattern of cerebral phosphorylated tau

Nitric oxide (NO) is a key physiological regulator in eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms. It can cause a variety of biological effects by reacting with its targets or/and indirectly inducing oxidative stress. NO can also be produced by bacteria including the pathogenic Bacillus anthracis; however, its role in the infectious process only begins to emerge. NO incapacitates macrophages by S-nitrosylating the intracellular proteins and protects B. anthracis from oxidative stress. It is also implicated in the formation of toxic peroxynitrite. In this study we further assessed the effects of B. an

INTRODUCTION: Testicular cancer is the most common malignancy in men 15- to 35-years-old. The North American standard classification divides testicular cancers into germ cell tumors and non-germ cell tumors. The lymphatic spread of germ cell tumors usually involves the retroperitoneal lymph nodes. However, this spread to the retroperitoneum rarely involves the hepatic hilum. We describe an unusual case of metastatic choriocarcinoma of the testis that was clinically mimicked by a cholestatic jaundice. This is an unusual presentation of testicular cancer and, to the best of our knowledge, the fi

BACKGROUND: Lipoedema is an accumulation of fat abnormally distributed in the lower limbs, and lymphoedema is oedema caused by a deficiency of the lymphatic system. High-resolution ultrasound operating at 20 MHz makes it possible to characterize dermal oedema.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of our study was to demonstrate that high-resolution ultrasound imaging of the skin can differentiate lipoedema from lymphoedema.
METHODS: Sixteen patients with lymphoedema (22 legs), eight patients with lipoedema (16 legs) and eight controls (16 legs) were included. Patients with lipolymphoedema were excluded.

UNLABELLED: Chyluria, defined as the presence of chyle in urine, is a rare condition caused by an abnormal communication between the lymphatic system and the urinary tract. It can present with massive proteinuria and characteristic milky urine, mimicking nephrotic syndrome. We report the case of a 23-year-old woman with a history of seronegative ocular myasthenia gravis who developed progressive bilateral lower extremity oedema and intermittent nephrotic-range proteinuria despite normal serum albumin and lipid profiles. A renal biopsy, performed to investigate proteinuria, was complicated by a

INTRODUCTION: A thyroglossal duct cyst is the most common congenital anomaly of the thyroid gland and midline masses in childhood (70% abnormality in childhood, 7% in adult). Carcinomas arising from a thyroglossal duct cyst are rare (only 1% of thyroglossal duct cyst cases) and characterized by relatively non-aggressive behavior and rare lymphatic spread. They are also diagnosed mostly during the third and fourth decades of life. About 85% to 92% of all thyroglossal duct cyst carcinomas are papillary carcinomas.

Sonographic identification of thickening of the gallbladder wall that consists of multiple striations (alternate hypoechoic and hyperechoic layers) has been considered strong evidence of the presence of acute cholecystitis. We studied 27 patients in whom sonograms showed striated thickening of the gallbladder wall to determine the diagnostic significance of this finding. Striations were classified as focal or diffuse. Sonograms were correlated with pathologic findings in 16 patients and with clinical diagnoses and laboratory findings in 11. Patients were categorized as having cholecystitis wit

Modern two-dimensional imaging is of such quality that echocardiography is now capable of detecting intrapericardial formations. Three morphological types of abnormal intrapericardial echoes have been described: round masses, mattresses and linear echoes. These have been observed in effusions of various origin and seem to be lacking in aetiological specificity. In order to determine more precisely the echocardiographic signs of pericardial metastases, the authors have analyzed 7 cases of intrapericardial masses visualized in a series of 10 patients with metastatic pericardial effusion and exam
