BACKGROUND: Prospective memory (PM) is defined as memory for future intentions and it is typically divided into time-based and event-based PM. Deficit of PM has been reported in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) but no study has yet explored the association between motor subtypes (tremor dominant and rigidity/bradykinesia dominant) and performance on PM tasks. The aim of the study was to explore the role of motor subtypes in the defect of PM.
METHODS: Consecutive outpatients with tremor dominant (TD-PD) or rigidity/bradykinesia dominant (PIGD-PD) PD and healthy subjects (HCs) were enroll

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by impaired functioning of autobiographical memory (AM). We use a quantitative meta-analysis to assess AM performance in adults diagnosed with BPD as compared to healthy controls (HC). Moderator variables included type of autobiographical memory as well as clinical and demographic variables. Large significant deficits were seen in the BPD group in comparison to the HC group. In the BPD group, effect sizes were large for overgenerality, omission, and specific memories, while not significant for recall. Age influenced the performance of the

People who have depression have difficulty recalling specific autobiographical information (Sumner, (2011) The mechanisms underlying overgeneral autobiographical memory: An evaluative review of evidence for the Ca R-FA-X model. Clinical Psychology Review, 3231(1), 34-48). This is called overgeneral autobiographical memory (OGM) and is associated with the development and persistence of depression. Williams, Barnhofer, Crane, Hermans, Raes, Watkins, & Dalgleish (2007 Autobiographical memory specificity and emotional disorder. Psychological Bulletin, 133(1), 122-148) proposed that OGM is maintain

BACKGROUND: Hearing voices can be a distressing and disabling experience for some, whilst it is a valued experience for others, so-called 'healthy voice-hearers'. Cognitive models of psychosis highlight the role of memory, appraisal and cognitive biases in determining emotional and behavioural responses to voices. A memory bias potentially associated with distressing voices is the overgeneral memory bias (OGM), namely the tendency to recall a summary of events rather than specific occasions. It may limit access to autobiographical information that could be helpful in re-appraising distressing

OBJECTIVE: First studies revealed overgeneral autobiographical memories in anorexia nervosa (AN) patients. The aim of the present study was to investigate frequency, generalization and valence of autobiographical memories in AN patients in response to eating disorder-related cue words.
METHOD: Autobiographical memory was examined in 21 AN patients and 21 healthy controls (HC) using a modified version of the Autobiographical Memory Test, incorporating body-related, food-related, perfectionism-related, depression-related and neutral cues.
RESULTS: Anorexia nervosa patients recalled fewer and m

BACKGROUND: Impaired emotion regulation is increasingly recognized as a core feature of depressive disorders. Indeed, currently and previously depressed adults both report greater problems in attenuating sadness (mood repair) in daily life than healthy controls. In contrast, studies of various strategies to attenuate sad affect have mostly found that currently or previously depressed adults and controls were similarly successful at mood repair in the laboratory. But few studies have examined mood repair among depression-prone youths or the effects of trait characteristics on mood repair outcom

Seventy high socially anxious (HSA) and 74 low socially anxious (LSA) participants rated perceived interpersonal and emotional consequences of both (a) autobiographical social blunders recalled from their own lives and (b) imagined blunders presented in standardized hypothetical social scenarios. Ratings of participants' autobiographical blunders were also provided by research assistants who were blind to hypotheses. Results indicated that HSA participants overestimated the negative consequences of their own autobiographical blunders. These negative perceptions among HSA participants extended

In the course of transient global amnesia, two patients showed symptoms of transient partial amnesia. Close observation showed that at some time during the episode the patients had some degree of nonverbal memory, which recovered earlier than verbal memory. Careful observation of the progression of symptoms during an episode of transient global amnesia may often reveal symptoms of transient partial amnesia.

Modifying intrusive memories and images is a powerful intervention in depression and anxiety disorders, but little is known about the presence of these intrusions in bipolar disorder. A semi-structured interview was administered to 29 euthymic patients with bipolar disorder, requiring them to report the intrusive memories and images recalled from their most recent episode of euthymia, depression and hypomania. Euthymia was characterised by intrusive memories of the past, which were less distressing than the memories experienced in depressed states. In addition to intrusive memories, depression

OBJECTIVE: To compare temporal order memory in older adults with and without human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
BACKGROUND: The frontal and temporal lobes play a key role in temporal order memory for items in a sequence. HIV-associated episodic memory deficits correlate with damage to neocortical interneurons in the fronto-striato-thalamo-cortical pathway and with atypical activation of the medial temporal lobes. Therefore, temporal order memory may be sensitive to neuropathological changes in individuals with HIV.
METHODS: In this study, 50 HIV-seropositive individuals aged ≥ 50

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate the extent of cognitive impairments in early-onset bipolar disorder (EBD) during manic episode in comparison to remission period.
METHOD: 30 healthy controls (HC) and 95 patients with EBD, with manic episode (n = 55) and remission period (n = 40) were included. Additionally, 31 (%56.4) of 55 patients with manic episode were re-evaluated during remission. A comprehensive cognitive battery was implemented to asses verbal and visual learning/memory, attention, inhibition, problem-solving, working memory, processing speed, and verbal fluency skills and global c

The sciences divide into those that discover laws and those that reconstruct histories. We argue that this division does not reflect a difference in subject matter, but a difference in epistemic regime. Law-based sciences operate under episodic closure: systems are idealized so that the outcomes of prior interactions do not alter the rules governing future ones. This regime-defining idealization (distinguished from pragmatic idealization) underlies the predictive successes of physics, but creates a systematic blind spot for evolutionary dynamics. We formalize this distinction using Stability-D

Understanding events is fundamental to remembering them later, but it remains unclear how incoming information is linked to prior knowledge. We investigated whether episodic memory encoding depends on semantic control processes that allow people to use their knowledge in a flexible and task-relevant manner. We manipulated semantic control type and demand at encoding to compare the contributions of two key processes: controlled semantic retrieval and semantic selection. In two preregistered experiments, young adults studied object images in two semantic encoding tasks. They matched the object e

Dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEAS) is an adrenal androgen that is, in part, aromatized to estradiol. It continues to be produced after menopause and provides estrogenicity after depletion of ovarian hormones. Estradiol depletion contributes to memory circuitry changes over menopause, including changes in hippocampal (HIPP) and dorsolateral- and ventrolateral-prefrontal cortex (DLPFC; VLPFC) function. Further, major depressive disorder (MDD) patients have, in general, lower levels of estradiol and lower DHEAS than healthy controls, thus potentially a higher risk of adverse menopausal outcom

Cognitive impairment is prevalent in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), but its underlying mechanisms are obscure. Here, we test the hypothesis that exaggerated orthostatic blood pressure reduction mediates the effects of renal failure on global cognition and memory. A total of 160 study subjects were recruited, including 80 dialysis patients and 80 controls. Global cognition was evaluated using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and episodic memory was evaluated using the auditory verbal learning test (AVLT). Autonomic function was evaluated via the low-frequency to high-frequ

The increasing evidence for a pure amnestic-like profile in multiple sclerosis (MS) introduces the role of hippocampal formation in MS episodic memory function. The aim of the present study was to investigate structural and functional hippocampal changes in mildly-disabled MS patients with and without memory impairment. Thirty-one MS patients with or without memory impairment and 16 healthy controls (HC) underwent MRI in a 3.0 T MRI scanner. Patients were categorized as memory preserved (MP) and memory impaired (MI) based on verbal and visual memory scores extracted from the Brief Repeatable N

BACKGROUND: Accurate measurement of trajectories in longitudinal studies, considered the gold standard method for tracking functional growth during adolescence, decline in aging, and change after head injury, is subject to confounding by testing experience.
METHODS: We measured change in cognitive and motor abilities over four test sessions (baseline and three annual assessments) in 154 male and 165 female participants (baseline age 12-21 years) from the National Consortium on Alcohol and NeuroDevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA) study. At each of the four test sessions, these participants wer

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the protective effect of NSAIDs and aspirin separately on cognitive decline in elderly subjects, controlling for consistent use of these agents over a prolonged period of time.
METHODS: The study sample consisted of 1007 subjects, drawn from a population-based random sample of elderly individuals, 62-85 years old, who participated in a 3-year follow-up study. From this sample subjects were selected, who did use NSAIDs and completed all cognitive tests at both measurements (n=137), and subjects who did not use NSAIDs and completed all cognitive tests (n=475). This study describes for the first time the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic modeling of the psychomotor and amnesic effects of a single 2-mg oral dose of lorazepam in healthy volunteers. Twelve healthy volunteers were included in this randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled two-way crossover study. The effect of lorazepam was examined for a battery of tests that explored mood, vigilance, psychomotor performance, and memory. The pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic modeling of these tests was performed using the indirect response model. Vigilance and psychomotor performance were signi

A method for selecting semantic cues for early childhood memories is presented. The written records of episodes submitted by the subjects in the study of Crovitz and Harvey (1979) were coded into three-word strings of words in accordance with the gist of the memories. Nouns which described many retrievals (Set A) and nouns which had described few retrievals (Set B) were presented to an independent group of young adults as prompts for early childhood episodes. Prompting with semantic cues gave a fast rate of retrieval, with nouns in Set A cuing early childhood memories more successfully than no
