Predicting breast cancer risk in a racially diverse, community-based sample of potentially high-risk women.

BACKGROUND: Identifying women with high risk of breast cancer is necessary to study high-risk experiences and deliver risk-management care. Risk prediction models estimate individuals' lifetime risk but have rarely been applied in community-based settings among women not yet receiving specialized care. Therefore, we aimed: (1) to apply three breast cancer risk prediction models (i.e., Gail, Claus, and IBIS) to a racially diverse, community-based sample of women, and (2) to assess risk prediction estimates using survey data. METHODS: An online survey was administered to women who were determin

An improved method for the effect estimation of the intermediate event on the outcome based on the susceptible pre-identification.

BACKGROUND: In follow-up studies, the occurrence of the intermediate event may influence the risk of the outcome of interest. Existing methods estimate the effect of the intermediate event by including a time-varying covariate in the outcome model. However, the insusceptible fraction to the intermediate event in the study population has not been considered in the literature, leading to effect estimation bias due to the inaccurate dataset. METHODS: In this paper, we propose a new effect estimation method, in which the susceptible subpopulation is identified firstly so that the estimation could

Toward better measurement of traffic injuries - Comparison of anatomical injury measures in predicting the clinical outcomes in motorcycle crashes.

INTRODUCTION: Little evidence exists in the literature regarding the discrimination power of better anatomical injury measures in differentiating clinical outcomes in motorcycle crashes. Furthermore, multiple injuries to different body parts of the rider are seldom analyzed. This study focuses on comparing anatomical injury measures such as the injury severity score (ISS) and the new injury severity score (NISS) in capturing injuries of multiple injured riders and examining the discriminatory capabilities of the ISS and NISS in predicting clinical outcomes post motorcycle crash. METHODS: The

A Novel Drug Repositioning Approach Based on Collaborative Metric Learning.

Computational drug repositioning, which is an efficient approach to find potential indications for drugs, has been used to increase the efficiency of drug development. The drug repositioning problem essentially is a top-K recommendation task that recommends most likely diseases to drugs based on drug and disease related information. Therefore, many recommendation methods can be adopted to drug repositioning. Collaborative metric learning (CML) algorithm can produce distance metrics that capture the important relationships among objects, and has been widely used in recommendation domains. By ap

Between-group comparison of area under the curve in clinical trials with censored follow-up: Application to HIV therapeutic vaccines.

In clinical trials, longitudinal data are commonly analyzed and compared between groups using a single summary statistic such as area under the outcome versus time curve (AUC). However, incomplete data, arising from censoring due to a limit of detection or missing data, can bias these analyses. In this article, we present a statistical test based on splines-based mixed-model accounting for both the censoring and missingness mechanisms in the AUC estimation. Inferential properties of the proposed method were evaluated and compared to ad hoc approaches and to a non-parametric method through a si

A mathematical modeling approach to measure the probability of HIV-1 transmission for different high-risk groups of Pakistan.

INTRODUCTION: Since 2010, the number of new HIV-1 cases has declined by 30% globally, however, in few countries, such as Pakistan, the cases have continued to increase, where the country witnessed a 57% increase in the number of new infections between 2010 and 2020. The HIV-1 epidemic in Pakistan is concentrated in certain high-risk groups, however, it is unknown which high-risk group has a higher likelihood of transmitting HIV-1 infections to vulnerable populations. This study aimed to apply mathematical probabilistic modeling to estimate the probability of HIV-1 transmission for different hi

A multistate joint model for interval-censored event-history data subject to within-unit clustering and informative missingness, with application to neurocysticercosis research.

We propose a multistate joint model to analyze interval-censored event-history data subject to within-unit clustering and nonignorable missing data. The model is motivated by a study of the neurocysticercosis (NC) cyst evolution at the cyst-level, taking into account the multiple cysts phases with intermittent missing data and loss to follow-up, as well as the intra-brain clustering of observations made on a predefined data collection schedule. Of particular interest in this study is the description of the process leading to cyst resolution, and whether this process varies by antiparasitic tre

Real-time dengue forecast for outbreak alerts in Southern Taiwan.

Dengue fever is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes. In recent decades, dengue fever has spread throughout the world. In 2014 and 2015, southern Taiwan experienced its most serious dengue outbreak in recent years. Some statistical models have been established in the past, however, these models may not be suitable for predicting huge outbreaks in 2014 and 2015. The control of dengue fever has become the primary task of local health agencies. This study attempts to predict the occurrence of dengue fever in order to achieve the purpose of timely warning. We applied a newly developed autoreg

Statistical tests for latent class in censored data due to detection limit.

Measures of substance concentration in urine, serum or other biological matrices often have an assay limit of detection. When concentration levels fall below the limit, the exact measures cannot be obtained. Instead, the measures are censored as only partial information that the levels are under the limit is known. Assuming the concentration levels are from a single population with a normal distribution or follow a normal distribution after some transformation, Tobit regression models, or censored normal regression models, are the standard approach for analyzing such data. However, in practice

An investigation of left-right vocal fold symmetry in rheological and histological properties.

OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to investigate the left-right vocal fold symmetry in rheological and histological properties using a rabbit model. The other objective was to develop statistical models for the comparison of rheological properties between paired vocal folds. METHODS: Viscoelastic shear properties of six pairs of vocal fold lamina propria specimens were measured over a frequency range of 1 to 250 Hz by a linear, controlled-strain, simple-shear rheometer. The rheological data of the left and right vocal folds was statistically compared using the mixed-effects model approach

A comparison of model selection methods for prediction in the presence of multiply imputed data.

Many approaches for variable selection with multiply imputed data in the development of a prognostic model have been proposed. However, no method prevails as uniformly best. We conducted a simulation study with a binary outcome and a logistic regression model to compare two classes of variable selection methods in the presence of MI data: (I) Model selection on bootstrap data, using backward elimination based on AIC or lasso, and fit the final model based on the most frequently (e.g. ≥50% ) selected variables over all MI and bootstrap data sets; (II) Model selection on original MI data, using

Climate and environmental factors affecting the incidence of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Isfahan, Iran.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a vector-borne human disease caused by Leishmania, a parasite transmitted by sand flies. CL is endemic in the Isfahan Province, Iran. This study was designed to identify the climate and environmental factors associated with CL incidence in Isfahan Province. Data included incident cases of CL, climate, and environmental factors, which were collected across 23 districts of province from 2007 to 2015. Analyses were performed with generalized linear models (GLMs) to fit a function to the relationships between the response and predictors. We used negative binomial re

The analysis of GM (1, 1) grey model to predict the incidence trend of typhoid and paratyphoid fevers in Wuhan City, China.

Typhoid and paratyphoid fevers (TPF), systemic emerging infectious diseases, is a serious health problem for society. If the incidence trend of TPF can be predicted, prevention and control measures can be taken in advance to reduce the harm to the people's health.Grey Model First Order One Variable [GM (1, 1)] was applied to predict the incidence trend of TPF with the incidence data of TPF in Wuhan City of China from 2004 to 2015. The original data were acquired from the national surveillance system. The GM (1, 1) model was established as ŷ (t + 1) = 0.88 e + 0.15. The goodness-of-fit test indi

Oral contraceptive use as a determinant of plasma concentrations of perfluoroalkyl substances among women in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort (MoBa) study.

OBJECTIVE: Because oral contraceptives (OC) tends to lessen menstrual fluid loss - a route of excretion for perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) - we hypothesized that such use would be positively associated with PFAS concentrations. METHODS: This analysis was based on the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort (MoBa) study. We included 1090 women from two previous substudies of women enrolled from 2003 to 2007. Characteristics of OC use were obtained at baseline: use in the past 12months, duration and recency of use, age at first use. We examined log-transformed plasma concentrations of seven PFASs

Spatiotemporal Parameters of 100-m Sprint in Different Levels of Sprinters with Unilateral Transtibial Amputation.

The aim of this study was to investigate differences of the spatiotemporal parameters in a 100-m sprint among elite, sub-elite, and non-elite sprinters with a unilateral transtibial amputation. Using publicly available Internet broadcasts, we analyzed 125, 19, and 33 records from 30 elite, 12 sub-elite, and 22 non-elite sprinters, respectively. For each sprinter's run, the average velocity, step frequency, and step length were calculated using the number of steps in conjunction with the official race time. Average velocity was greatest in elite sprinters (8.71±0.32 m/s), followed by the sub-el

Conservative treatment of acute cholecystitis: a systematic review and pooled analysis.

BACKGROUND: In medical practice, the tendency to remove an inflamed gallbladder is deeply rooted. Cholecystectomy, however, is associated with relatively high complication rates, and therefore the decision whether or not to perform surgery should be well considered. For some patients, the surgical risk-benefit profile may favour conservative treatment. The objective of this study was to examine the short- and long-term outcome of conservative treatment of patients with acute calculous cholecystitis. METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE, Embase and Cochrane Library databases was performed.

Bayesian quantile regression-based nonlinear mixed-effects joint models for time-to-event and longitudinal data with multiple features.

This article explores Bayesian joint models for a quantile of longitudinal response, mismeasured covariate and event time outcome with an attempt to (i) characterize the entire conditional distribution of the response variable based on quantile regression that may be more robust to outliers and misspecification of error distribution; (ii) tailor accuracy from measurement error, evaluate non-ignorable missing observations, and adjust departures from normality in covariate; and (iii) overcome shortages of confidence in specifying a time-to-event model. When statistical inference is carried out f
