Generalizability of deep learning-based dose conversion model in proton beam therapy.

BACKGROUND: In proton beam therapy (PBT), the analytical pencil beam (PB) algorithm involves dose uncertainties in inhomogeneous regions, making accurate Monte Carlo (MC) dose calculation desirable but time-consuming. Deep learning, converting the dose calculated by the PB algorithm into an MC-equivalent dose distribution, can resolve the trade-off between calculation accuracy and speed. Training a DL-based dose conversion model that can be applied to any tumor site would be ideal; however, the appropriate training regions and its generalizability remain unclear. PURPOSE: We developed a DL-ba

Quantitative microbial risk assessment of hyperaerotolerant and multidrug-resistant Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli related to contaminated chicken meat consumption.

Hyperaerotolerant and multidrug-resistant (HATMDR) Campylobacter spp. are emerging. Contaminations of C. jejuni and C. coli from chicken meat are contributors to campylobacteriosis. This study determined the cross-contamination and recontamination transfer rates of HATMDR C. jejuni and C. coli via cutting board, glove, and knife on chicken meat. Transfer rates in cross-contaminations were the highest on the cutting board in both C. jejuni (40.58 ± 21.07%) and C. coli (37.79 ± 26.49%). The recontamination transfer rates of C. jejuni and C. coli from contaminated glove to cooked chicken were the

A fast dosimetric optimization method of intensity modulated brachytherapy (IMBT) treatment plans for cervical cancer.

Objective.Intensity-modulated brachytherapy (IMBT) is an innovative technique aimed at achieving anisotropic dose distributions in brachytherapy. This study develops a fast dosimetric optimization method specifically for IMBT plans in cervical cancer.Approach.ARCHER-IMBT was validated against TOPAS in both water phantoms and clinical geometries. Optimization was performed for six intracavitary (IC-BT) cases and one intracavitary/interstitial (IC/IS-BT) case, comparing 50 kVp x-ray and Ir-192 sources. The study also explored the potential of IMBT to achieve comparable dosimetry to IC/IS-BT usin

Simulation of pooling optimization methods for differing infection dynamics, sampling practices, and desired outcomes in surveillance testing.

The reliability of assumptions made about prevalence for pooling optimization varies greatly among target pathogens and surveillance strategies. When prevalence is unknown and difficult to anticipate, surveillance programs risk generating additional costs if pooling is suboptimal. Different methods of approximating optimal pool size (OPS) vary in precision of optimization, required sampling information, and the logistical demands placed on a laboratory workflow. Hence, it can be unclear how to assess compatibility between pooling optimization methods and the priorities of a surveillance progra

Population pharmacokinetics model of pyrazinamide to optimize tuberculosis treatment: An interethnic cohort study of diabetes mellitus effect on drug exposure.

Diabetes mellitus (DM), a common comorbidity in tuberculosis (TB) patients, can alter the pharmacokinetics (PK) of TB drugs. Additionally, clinical and demographic differences may contribute to interethnic PK variability. However, current WHO-recommended doses for pyrazinamide (PZA) do not account for those factors. We aimed to evaluate factors related to interindividual variability (IIV) and interethnic differences in the PK of PZA between Korean and Indonesian patients with TB. Demographics, clinical characteristics, and PZA concentrations obtained from hospitals in both countries were used

A Monte Carlo based dose verification tool for an HDR Ir-192 brachytherapy source and its evaluation on extremity malignancies.

BACKGROUND: TG-43 formalism dose calculation for brachytherapy with the homogeneous water-based assumption is widely used, which can lead to dose inaccuracy in treatment planning. PURPOSE: Extremity malignancies are also treated with high-dose-rate (HDR) 192Ir interstitial brachytherapy, a treatment site that has not been specifically investigated in prior comparative dosimetric studies, and the proximity of source dwell positions to bone and air introduces significant heterogeneity. BrachyPlanCheck, an in-house brachytherapy second dose verification program for Monte Carlo (MC) simulations,

Discrepancy between collapsed cone and Monte Carlo algorithms in lung inhomogeneity correction.

Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is a well-established standard of treatment for non-small cell lung cancer patients. However, SBRT is a double-edged sword and a high degree of accuracy is required for dose calculations. In the presence of inhomogeneity, it should be below 3% and depends strongly on the accuracy of the algorithm used for dose calculation in treatment planning system (TPS). The aim of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of collapsed cone (CC) algorithm for dose calculation in the presence of lung inhomogeneity compared to the Monte Carlo (MC) algorithm as the refer

GRPR-targeted gold nanoparticles as selective radiotherapy enhancers in glioblastoma.

Objective.Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most diagnosed primary brain tumor in adults and remains associated with a poor prognosis due to its aggressive nature. As tumor recurrence is often observed after standard radiation treatment, the use of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to improve radiotherapy effectiveness has been proposed as an advanced treatment strategy for this condition. Toward this goal, we investigated the radiosensitizing potential of gastrin releasing peptide receptor (GRPR)-targeted gold nanoparticles (AuNP-BBN) carrying a bombesin peptide (BBN) in glioblastoma cells, when

Understanding the opioid syndemic in North Carolina: A novel approach to modeling and identifying factors.

The opioid epidemic is a significant public health challenge in North Carolina, but limited data restrict our understanding of its complexity. Examining trends and relationships among different outcomes believed to reflect opioid misuse provides an alternative perspective to understand the opioid epidemic. We use a Bayesian dynamic spatial factor model to capture the interrelated dynamics within six different county-level outcomes, such as illicit opioid overdose deaths, emergency department visits related to drug overdose, treatment counts for opioid use disorder, patients receiving prescript

Ultra-low dose CT for suspected physical abuse.

INTRODUCTION: Ultra-low dose CT (ULDCT) of the whole-body is a promising technique to replace radiography for the diagnosis of suspected physical abuse (SPA). This study aims to compare the image quality and radiation dose of ULDCT to standard dose CT (STDCT) in cases of SPA. METHODS: In this phantom-based study, two sets of newborn, whole-body, anthropomorphic phantom images were acquired using STDCT and ULDCT protocols on a GE Revolution Apex scanner with Deep Learning Iterative Reconstruction (DLIR). The effective dose (ED) of both protocols was calculated using Monte Carlo simulation. Obs

TOPAS-based 4D Monte Carlo simulation of transit dose in esophageal HDR brachytherapy: a phantom study.

Objective.Intraluminal high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy is a well-established treatment modality for esophageal cancer, where a radioactive source moves through a catheter to deliver dose at discrete dwell positions. However, during the source's transit phase non-negligible dose may be delivered to surrounding healthy tissues. This study utilizes the time-dependent (4D) Monte Carlo (MC) simulation approach to quantify the transit dose to organs at risks (OARs) during esophageal brachytherapy using the TOPAS tool.Approach.A simplified yet anatomically representative male anthropomorphic phant
