The paper considers and rejects two arguments against the performance of sexual reassignment surgery. First, it is argued that the operation is not mutilating, but functionally enabling. Second, it is argued that the operation is not objectionably deceptive, since, if there is such a thing as our 'real sex', we do not know (ordinarily) what it is. The paper is also intended to shed light on what our sexual identity is and on what matters in sexual relations.

Gambling and speculation which leads to zero-sum outcomes are prohibited in Islamic finance and condemned in conventional finance. This article explores the reasons for the similarity of objections towards gambling and speculation. The moral issue of whether to use organs from anencephalic newborns continues to perplex philosophers, physicians, nurses and others. In Canada, the medical profession has taken a firm stance that using these organs is not an ethical practice. Does this stance have a firm footing? Countering it are a number of arguments for using these organs. In addition, parental autonomy is limited by the present practice of having doctors control the decision.

The attitudes of 52 counselors and trainees toward homosexuality showed respondents were less likely to accept homosexual persons in eroticized contexts, more likely in noneroticized contexts, with mixed acceptance for homosexuals in sensitive professional positions. Respondents generally accepted homosexuals' civil rights and saw homosexuality as nonpathological and unrelated to morality per se. Social distance theory may explain these results.

A case of hydrops fetalis with intra-uterine death after premature closure of the ductus arteriosus because of inhibition of premature labour by the administration of indomethacin is presented. The physiology of acute and chronic intra-uterine constriction of the ductus arteriosus and the effects of indomethacin on the fetal circulation are discussed. Mention is also made of the moral conflict confronting the doctor in the management of an affected fetus during the third trimester.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the impact of visitor restrictions on clinical cancer nurses, their roles and duties, and the coping strategies used to address the impact.
DATA SOURCES: Semistructured qualitative interviews were conducted through purposive sampling with nurses working in a clinical role within cancer services at the study site for at least 1 year. Interviews were recorded and transcribed. BACKGROUND: Although resting heart rate (RHR) and empathy are independently and negatively associated with violent behavior, relatively little is known about the interplay between these psychophysiological and temperament-related risk factors.
METHODS: Using a sample of 160 low-income, racially diverse men followed prospectively from infancy through early adulthood, this study examined whether RHR and empathy during early adolescence independently and interactively predict violent behavior and related correlates in late adolescence and early adulthood.
