OBJECTIVE: To investigate the knowledge and beliefs about malaria transmission and practices for vector control in eight villages on the coastal plain of Chiapas, Mexico.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted during May and June 1995 in Chiapas, Mexico. A questionnaire to investigate family structure, knowledge on malaria transmission, preventive measures and attitudes towards seeking treatment was applied to both family heads of a sample of households. Associations were analyzed by estimating odds ratios with confidence intervals and p values, using bivariate and multi

The rapid development of insecticide resistance in malaria vectors threatens insecticide-based interventions. It is hypothesized that infection of insecticide-resistant vectors with Plasmodium parasites increases their vulnerability to insecticides, thus assuring the effectiveness of insecticide-based strategies for malaria control. Nonetheless, there is limited field data to support this. We investigated the effect of the Plasmodium falciparum infection on the susceptibility of Anopheles gambiae s.l. and Anopheles funestus to pyrethroids in south-eastern (Kilombero) and north-western (Muleba)

Japanese Encephalitis (JE) is the most important cause of human encephalitis in Southeast Asia, and this zoonosis is mainly transmitted from pigs to human by mosquitoes. A better understanding of the host-feeding preference of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) major vectors is crucial for identifying risk areas, defining bridge vector species and targeting adapted vector control strategies. To assess host-feeding preference of JE vectors in a rural Cambodian area where JE is known to circulate, in 2017, we implemented four sessions of mosquito trapping (March, June, September, December), durin

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a major viral zoonosis transmitted by mosquitoes. The virus is endemic in most parts of sub-Saharan Africa and can affect humans, livestock, and wild ungulates. Knowledge of the biology of vectors of Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is essential for the establishment of effective control measures of the disease. The objective of this study was to determine the species diversity and relative abundance of potential RVFV vectors in the North Region of Cameroon. Adult mosquitoes were trapped during the wet and dry seasons from December 2017 to January 2019 with "EVS Light"

Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) are a key threat for millions of people worldwide, since they act as vectors for devastating parasites and pathogens. Mosquito young instars are usually targeted with organophosphates, insect growth regulators and microbial control agents. Indoors residual spraying and insecticide-treated bed nets are also employed. However, these chemicals have strong negative effects on human health and the environment. Newer and safer tools have been recently implemented to enhance control of mosquitoes. In this review, I focus on characterization, effectiveness, and non-targ

This study develops and analyses a mathematical model that represents dengue transmission between human and mosquito populations. The human population is divided into susceptible, infected, and recovered classes, while the mosquito population is divided into susceptible and infected classes. This model captures interaction between humans and vectors with a number of significant epidemiological parameters governing the spread of disease. In devising effective intervention strategies, two optimal control techniques are considered. The first technique applies Pontryagin's Minimum Principle for ob

The time-varying effective reproduction number, Rt, characterizes the dynamics of infectious disease transmission at a given point in time. For mosquito-borne diseases, there has been growing interest in estimating Rt for spatially targeted vector control interventions. However, systematic evaluations of Rt estimation accuracy for mosquito-borne diseases are lacking: a concerning phenomenon given that errors in Rt estimation at fine spatial scales could be amplified by human mobility-driven transmission and high rates of asymptomatic cases. We systematically evaluated the accuracy of popular R

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are conserved in a wide range of organisms, including insects. In 2014, an epsilon GST, known as Noppera-b … lude mosquitoes, some of which are vectors of diseases such as malaria and dengue fever. Given that mosquito control is essential to reduce mosquito-borne diseases, new IGRs that specifically kill mosquito vectors are always in demand. Dengue fever is a viral mosquito borne disease transmitted by day biting mosquito, Aedes aegypti. No medicine has been proven to be effective for the complete cure of dengue and mosquito control remains to be the only effective option. Increased cases of dengue contraction are being enormously reported worldwide every year. Thus, the urge for an effective measure remains a factor of major concern. In the present study, biosynthesized spherical-like structured zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles using Indigofera tinctoria leaf extracts are employed as a mosquito controlling agent. The biosynthesized…

The incidence of mosquito-borne disease poses a significant threat to human and animal health throughout the world, with effective chemical control interventions limited by widespread insecticide resistance. Recent evidence suggests that gut bacteria of mosquitoes, known to be essential in nutritional homeostasis and pathogen defense, may also play a significant role in facilitating insecticide resistance. This study investigated the extent to which bacteria contribute to the general esterase and cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (P450)-mediated detoxification of the insecticides propoxur and nale

Transgenesis technology has been developed for the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. Successful integration of exogenous DNA into the germline of this mosquito has been achieved with the class II transposable elements, Hermes, mariner and piggyBac. A number of marker genes, including the cinnabar(+) gene of Drosophila melanogaster, and fluorescent protein genes, can be used to monitor the insertion of these elements. The availability of multiple elements and marker genes provides a powerful set of tools to investigate basic biological properties of this vector insect, as well as the materi

Nearly 30% of emerging infectious disease events worldwide are transmitted by arthropod vectors, and this proportion continues to rise. Rapid and accurate detection is critical for directing vector control interventions, thereby reducing the likelihood of widespread transmission. Surveillance of infected mosquitoes can provide an early warning of impending human infection; however, conventional virus testing relies on processing large pools of mosquitoes and requires labor-intensive pre-processing. During rapidly developing epidemic or panzootic events, these delays may limit the effectiveness

Three surveys related to the knowledge, attitude and practices of populations towards mosquitoes were conducted in Côte d'Ivoire. The first survey was undertaken in June 1994 in the city of Bouaké and the other two respectively in January 1996 and in June 1999 in the village of Kafiné. The surveys have revealed that whatever the environment, nuisance due to mosquitoes constitutes a great concern for the population of the villages. The majority of people interviewed in urban (94%), peri-urban (68%) zones and in Kafiné (94%) associates mosquito with malaria against 18% only in Kabolo. Furthermor

BACKGROUND: Mosquito feeding behavior and habitat preferences strongly influence arbovirus transmission, particularly for viruses where swine serve as amplifying hosts. The high density of pigs in commercial operations poses a potential risk for severe outbreaks if mosquito-borne pathogens were to be introduced. This study characterizes habitat preferences and feeding behavior of mosquito species on commercial swine farms in the USA.
METHODS: Overall, ten farms (five sow and five wean-to-market [WTM] farms) were sampled biweekly from June to October 2024. At each farm, resting mosquitoes were

This review systematically examines the mechanisms through which multiple environmental pollutants-including microplastics, heavy metals, atmospheric particulates, pesticide residues, water eutrophication, and artificial light at night-synergistically exacerbate the transmission risk of mosquito-borne diseases. A conceptual framework of the "pollution - resistance - transmission" vicious cycle is proposed, illustrating how pollutants not only directly impair mosquito physiology and drive the evolution of insecticide resistance but also systematically enhance pathogen transmission efficiency by

Pseudomonas fluorescens Migula (VCRC B426) produces a secondary metabolite, which was found to be active against pupae of vector mosquitoes namely Culex quinquefasciatus, Anopheles stephensi and Aedes aegypti. The mosquito pupicidal metabolite from P. fluoescens was mass produced and separated by ethyl acetate extraction and purified further by silica gel column chromatography, FPLC, HPLC and TLC. The purified metabolite was characterized by NMR, FT-IR, LC-MS and MALDI-TOF. The FT-IR, (1)H and (13)C NMR results showed that it is a rhamnolipid (di-rhamnolipid). The matrix assisted laser desorpt

BACKGROUND: There is a need for effective methods to control Aedes aegypti and prevent the transmission of dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever and Zika viruses. Insecticide treated screening (ITS) is a promising approach, particularly as it targets adult mosquitoes to reduce human-mosquito contact.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A cluster-randomised controlled trial evaluated the entomological efficacy of ITS based intervention, which consisted of the installation of pyrethroid-impregnated long-lasting insecticide-treated netting material fixed as framed screens on external doors and windows.
