Developing a ground truth for a convolutional neural network-based segmentation of anatomical structures in endoscopic ear surgery videos.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a ground truth for a convolutional neural network-based segmentation of the stapes, chorda tympani and facial nerve in endoscopic ear surgery videos, and to evaluate the accuracy of artificial intelligence (AI) predictions on test videos. METHODS: Forty prospectively-gathered endoscopic ear tympanotomy videos were segmented to establish a ground truth. This ground truth was used to prime a convolutional neural network (CNN) to predict the stapes, chorda tympani and facial nerve. The CNN was then tested on an unlabeled series of videos, and the accuracy o

Improving Laser Direct Writing Overlay Precision Based on a Deep Learning Method.

This study proposes a deep learning-based method to improve overlay alignment precision in laser direct writing systems. Alignment errors arise from multiple sources in nanoscale processes, including optical aberrations, mechanical drift, and fiducial mark imperfections. A significant portion of the residual alignment error stems from the interpretation of mark coordinates by the vision system and algorithms. Here, we developed a convolutional neural network (CNN) model to predict the coordinates calculation error of 66,000 sets of computer-generated defective crosshair marks (simulating real

Let's chat: developmental neural bases of social motivation during real-time peer interaction.

Humans are motivated to interact with each other, but the neural bases of social motivation have been predominantly examined in non-interactive contexts. Understanding real-world social motivation is of special importance during middle childhood (ages 8-12), a period when social skills improve, social networks grow, and social brain networks specialize. To assess interactive social motivation, the current study used a novel fMRI paradigm in which children believed they were chatting with a peer. The design targeted two phases of interaction: (1) Initiation, in which children engaged in a socia

Automatic tracking of healthy joint kinematics from stereo-radiography sequences.

Kinematic tracking of healthy joints in radiography sequences is frequently performed by maximizing similarities between computed perspective projections of 3D computer models and corresponding objects' appearances in radiographic images. Significant human effort associated with manual tracking presents a major bottleneck in biomechanics research methods and limits the scale of target applications. The current work introduces a method for fully-automatic tracking of tibiofemoral and patellofemoral kinematics in stereo-radiography sequences for subjects performing dynamic activities. The propos

Enhancing EEG Classification for Motor Imagery Control of a VR Game based on Deep Learning Techniques on Small Datasets.

Motor imagery-based Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) suffer from limited accuracy when the EEG dataset is recorded from naive BCI users due to noisy components. Neural networks capture more robust representations of EEG features, but require large amount of data which is challenging to collect, due to long motor imagery training sessions. On the other hand, linear- and Riemann-based machine learning algorithms achieve above chance-level accuracy on small scale datasets, but, performance degrades on noisy datasets. To address this issue, we implemented a Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Netwo

Label-free classification of nanoscale drug delivery systems using hyperspectral imaging and convolutional neural networks.

Label-free characterization of nanoscale drug delivery systems remains a critical challenge in pharmaceutical research. Traditional analytical methods, such as cryo-electron microscopy, are labor-intensive, low-throughput, and often require labeling, which can interfere with nanoparticle functionality. This study introduces a non-invasive hyperspectral imaging (HSI) framework combined with deep learning to classify therapeutic liposomes. A 3D convolutional neural network (3D CNN) was employed to extract spatial-spectral features, while the synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) addr

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) leads to high mortality, especially amongst individuals with HIV. Predicting the incidence of disease-related complications is challenging, for which purpose the value of brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has not been well investigated. We used a convolutional neural network (CNN) to explore the complementary contribution of brain MRI to the conventional prognostic determinants. METHODS: We pooled data from two randomised control trials of HIV-positive and HIV-negative adults with clinical TBM in Vietnam to predict the occurrence of death or new
