Antisocial personality disorder (APD) is associated with increased problem severity in treatment-seeking opioid-dependent patients. Treatment studies have reported mixed results but generally show that patients with APD make progress that is often comparable to drug-dependent patients without the personality disorder. Much of this work is based on secondary analyses of studies evaluating responses to a variety of drug abuse treatment interventions. This study reports on a randomized prospective trial evaluating a behavioral approach for managing opioid-dependent patients with APD. Subjects (N

BACKGROUND: The association between antisocial behavior and alcohol problems is well established, but the role that psychopathic traits and other factors such as drinking patterns and motives and family history play in this relationship has not been subjected to much empirical scrutiny.
METHODS: A large sample (n=329) of male Federal Correctional Institution inmates participated in structured interviews designed to permit diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder and to assess facets of psychopathic personality as defined by the Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised. Prisoners also completed

Available MAOIs seem to be mainly indicated for the heterogeneous group of patients with depressive syndromes. Although groups of patients with all the recognized major subtypes of depression (including "endogenous depression") probably respond in varying degrees, MAOIs appear to be particularly indicated for out-patients with "neurotic depression" complicated by panic disorder or hysteroid dysphoria, which involves repeated episodes of depressed mood in response to feeling rejected. MAOIs can also be effective in several anxiety syndromes, in particular panic disorder. Other reports have clai

BACKGROUND: The developmental taxonomic theory proposes that there are two subtypes of antisocial behaviour. The first is a neurodevelopmental disorder which emerges in early childhood and follows a life-course persistent course, whereas the second emerges in adolescence, remits in early adulthood and reflects peer processes such as mimicry of antisocial peers. The aim of this review was to evaluate the developmental taxonomic theory in the light of recent empirical research.
METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature review comparing these subtypes of antisocial behaviour based on sear

PURPOSE: To explore Paralympic athletes' lived experiences of becoming physically active after disability, and the role that this may have played in the development of posttraumatic growth.
METHODS: Life history interviews were conducted with 7 individuals with an acquired and traumatic disability, who were aiming to take part in the London 2012 Paralympic Games. This was also informed by observation of sport participation. Data were analysed using a holistic content analysis.
RESULTS: Three main themes were identified that reflected participants' initial physical activity experiences and wh

BACKGROUND: Adults with depressive disorder report high rates of sub-optimal maternal care in childhood. Despite the greater salience of relationships with parents earlier in life, associations with parenting style have not yet been systematically studied in adolescent onset disorder.
METHODS: A six-wave, 3-year study of adolescent health in 2032 Australian secondary school students provided an opportunity to undertake a two-phase study of early onset depression. Between waves 2 to 6, a self-administered computerised form of the revised Clinical Interview Schedule (CIS-R) was used to generate

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine for associations between depression and cigarette smoking.
METHOD: A sample of 92 depressed smokers was compared with a control sample of depressed non-smokers, matched for age, gender and diagnostic variables. Comparisons were made across a range of demographic, depression, family history, developmental factors, anxiety and personality style variables, as well as use of alcohol and illicit drugs.
RESULTS: We failed to find any difference between smokers and non-smokers in history or severity of depression. Cigarette smokers were distingu

In this report we describe the development and partial validation of an empirically derived typology of families based on 11 family variable composites derived from the California Family Health Project. Our goal was to use the typology to condense and integrate the findings from previous analyses of a large group of family variables and to account for differences in the self-reported health of adult family members. Exploratory and confirmatory cluster analyses conducted separately by gender classified 97% of the sample into four parallel types for husbands and wives: Balanced, Traditional, Dis

Conduct disorders represent one of the most troubling and persistent childhood psychiatric disorders. This serious condition has a poor long-term prognosis and entails a wide range of negative consequences over the life span. No single intervention strategy has been identified that successfully alters its negative course. This article reviews developmental findings and previous intervention efforts and provides a rationale for approaching the problem of Conduct Disorder through primary preventive intervention. A comprehensive, family-based prevention model and specific clinical strategies for

In a prospective study of adolescent depression, adolescents (N = 1,508) were assessed at Time 1 and after 1 year (Time 2) on psychosocial variables hypothesized to be associated with depression. Most psychosocial variables were associated with current (n = 45) depression. Formerly depressed adolescents (n = 217) continued to differ from never depressed controls on many of the psychosocial variables. Many of the depression-related measures also acted as risk factors for future depression (n = 112), especially past depression, current other mental disorders, past suicide attempt, internalizing

Histories of childhood trauma have been reported previously in bulimic subjects but no study to date has assessed how these experiences may affect response to fluoxetine. Thirty outpatient subjects in a placebo-controlled trial of 60 mg of fluoxetine for the treatment of bulimia nervosa completed the Dissociative Experiences Scale and a self-report instrument assessing trauma. Response to treatment was measured with the Hamilton Depression Scale-17 (HAMD-17), the CGI, the PGI, and the change in number of binges per day. Subjects taking fluoxetine with histories of physical abuse showed a signi

The authors examined characteristics of Finnish mothers (N = 924) who use hostile child-rearing practices (i.e., they ignore the child, are punitive and irritable, and perceive the child as a burden), practices that have been shown (Räikkönen & Keltikangas-Järvinen, 1992) to predispose children to Type A behavior. The results of this study indicate that two factors--Type A behavior in the mothers and the mothers' sociodemographic background (low occupational status, low educational level and young age)--increase the probability of the mothers' treating their children in a hostile manner. Also,

Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) norms developed by Marks and Briggs (1967/1972) have served as the standard adolescent norms used for over 10 years. Additional adolescent norms have recently been produced by Gottesman, Hanson, Kroeker, and Briggs (1987) and by Colligan and Offord (1989), thereby providing MMPI users with a potential choice of adolescent norms. Our study examines the effects of these adolescent norm sets on single-scale and profile elevations. In addition, we examine the ability of these norm sets to generate T-score values that would serve to discriminate ac

Patients with a long history of temporal lobe epilepsy or primary generalized epilepsy entered a questionnaire study of personality characteristics, based on a modification of the Bear-Fedio inventory for temporal lobe behavioural syndrome. Psoriasis patients and healthy volunteers served as controls. Four clinical meaningful dimensions of included personality traits were identified: ixoide, ideational, obsessive-compulsive and affective features. Analyses based on the Rasch model approved of all dimensions except for affective features. The epilepsy group obtained the highest scores on all 3

Since Stern first started his work in 1938, the field has recognized several empirically supported models of the etiology of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Two such models are the Tripartite Model of the Development of BPD and the Biosocial Development Model of BPD. The Tripartite Model of the Development of BPD suggests that it is a combination of a hyperbolic temperament, traumatic childhood experiences, and an event or series of events that trigger the onset of BPD. Whereas the Biosocial Development Model of BPD elaborates on the work of Linehan's Biosocial Theory. This model sugges

66 juvenile drug-consumers--development-crises (32%), neurotic developments (30%), abnormal juvenile personalities (38%) - with a predominantly polytoxicomanic drug-anamnesis of several years are examined as to their suicidal development. The quantitative and qualitative progression of drug-abuse, the duration of drug-anamnesis, frequent broken-home-situations, grave educational deficiencies together with lacking possibilities of identification, a distinct social decline and chronic conflict-situations indicate the serious degree of the suicidal development. Different suicidal syndromes are wo

Traumatic experience symptomatology, resiliency factors, and stress among young adults who had experienced alcoholism within their family of origin were assessed in comparison to adults who as children experienced traumatic life events other than alcoholism and those who indicated neither problem (parental alcoholism or traumatic life event) during their childhood. These three groups were compared on self-report measures of stress, resiliency, depressive symptomatology, and trauma symptoms. Results indicated adult children of alcoholics (ACOA) had more self-reported stress, more difficulty ini

OBJECTIVE: Healthcare providers might develop emotional distress following direct and indirect exposure to traumatic events. Evidence shows that midwives, who care for women in complicated situations, are often exposed to circumstances that have a potential to lead to a variety of psychological reactions, including symptoms identified with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Nevertheless, the positive-healthy context in which childbirth is mainly perceived raises questions regarding the protective role of personality traits, which are related to processing methods of stress and pain, in the
