PURPOSE: To assess the incidence of acute postoperative endophthalmitis (POE) after cataract surgery combined with corneal, glaucoma or vitreoretinal surgical procedures from 2005 to 2014 in France.
METHODS: In this cohort study, acute POE occurring within 6 weeks after surgery was identified by means of billing codes recorded in a national database in patients operated for cataract extraction with phacoemulsification, or corneal, glaucoma or vitreoretinal surgical procedures, either combined or stand-alone.
RESULTS: From January 2005 to December 2014, up to 6 260 477 eyes underwent phacoemu…

PURPOSE: Small incision cataract surgery (SICS) and phacoemulsification with oblique limbal stab incision technique were studied and compared.
SETTING: The study was conducted in the Department of Ophthalmology, Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla, for 1 year.
DESIGN: This was a prospective randomized study.
METHODS: One hundred patients undergoing SICS (6-7 mm) were compared with another age- and sex-matched 100 patients undergoing phaco (2.8 mm) surgery with oblique limbal stab incision technique. These two groups were further subdivided into two groups of 50 each. Patients with traumat…

PURPOSE: To determine the timing of vitrectomy in patients with dislocated nuclear fragments after phacoemulsification and to correlate timing with visual outcomes.
SETTING: University Eye Clinic of Ioannina, Ioannina, Greece.
METHODS: This was a retrospective review of the records of 26 patients who had phacoemulsification at the University Eye Clinic of Ioannina over a 5-year period. The mean age of the 13 men and 13 women was 66.9 years (range 59 to 80 years). All patients had nucleus or nuclear fragment dislocation into the vitreous cavity during phacoemulsification and had vitrectomy an…

PURPOSE: To compare the rate of intraoperative complications and visual outcomes in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (NvAMD) and control eyes without NvAMD undergoing phacoemulsification.
SETTING: Multicenter study.
DESIGN: Retrospective, nonrandomized comparative study.
METHODS: Eyes were classified based on the presence or absence of an NvAMD diagnosis. The main outcomes were (1) the rate of intraoperative complications, (2) the logMAR visual acuity (VA) at 4 to 12 weeks postoperatively in both groups, and (3) the reinjection rate of intravitreal antivascular end…

PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy of 2.5% sodium hyaluronate (BD Multivisc) with the soft shell technique in reducing corneal endothelial cell damage during cataract phacoemulsification in patients with hard lens nucleus (3+) and cornea guttata.
METHODS: Thirty patients (37 eyes) scheduled for cataract surgery at Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, University Hospital San Raffaele, Milano, Italy. Thirty-seven eyes (randomly divided into Groups A and B) with hard lens nucleus (grade 3 or higher) and cornea guttata had phacoemulsification using the soft shell technique (Group A) wit…

METHODS: Using the resources of th … ere identified. The cumulative probability of RD after extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) and phacoemulsification was 0.27%, 0.71%, 1.23%, 1.58%, and 1.79% at 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20 years after surgery. Purpose. With this report we describe ultrasound biomicroscopic (UBM) findings in a patient with anterior megalophthalmos before and after undergoing phacoemulsification with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation. Methods. Phacoemulsification was carried out for nuclear sclerosis in both eyes of a patient diagnosed with anterior megalophthalmos. The patient was subjected to detailed ophthalmic examination including ultrasound biomicroscopy and Scheimpflug imaging prior to and after surgery. Preoperative ultrasound biomicroscopy revealed a deep anterior chamber with posterior bowing o…

We report the ocular manifestations of Alport syndrome and the surgical results in 4 patients. All 4 patients had anterior lenticonus; 2 also had posterior lenticonus in both eyes, 3 had flecked retina, and 1 had posterior polymorphous dystrophy. In both eyes of the 4 patients, phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation was performed to treat anterior and posterior lenticonus. The postoperative visual acuity was excellent in all patients. We recommend phacoemulsification with IOL implantation as a safe and effective procedure in patients with lenticonus secondary to Alport sy…

A 60-year-old man with senile cataract had phacoemulsification and implantation of a single-piece acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) in July 2000. There were no intraoperative or short-term postoperative complications, and the visual acuity was 20/20 on the day after surgery. In February 2002, 19 months postoperatively, posterior capsule opacification (PCO) extending from the base of the IOL loops was observed. Capsulotomy was not performed, and the PCO regressed spontaneously between April 2003 and March 2005. This is the first documented case of spontaneous PCO regression after phacoemulsificati…

SETTING: Gimbel Eye Centre, Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
METHODS: Combined viscocanalostomy, phacoemulsification, and intraocular lens implantation was performed in 83 eyes. A shared scleral incision was made in 46 eyes and a clear corneal incision separate from the viscocanalostomy site, in 37 eyes. A retrospective review of these cases was performed.
RESULTS: Intraocular pressure (IOP) was significantly lower in both groups 2 and 8 weeks and 6 months postoperatively. The decline in …

PURPOSE: To investigate whether cataract surgical skill performance metrics automatically generated by artificial intelligence (AI) models can differentiate between trainee and faculty surgeons and the correlation between AI metrics and expert-rated skills.
METHODS: Routine cataract surgical videos from residents (N = 28) and attendings (N = 29) were collected. Three video-level metrics were generated by deep learning models: phacoemulsification probe decentration, eye decentration, and zoom level change. Three types of instrument- and landmark- specific metrics were generated for the limbus,…
