Ultraviolet radiation and visible light both have biologic effects on the skin. Visible light can induce erythema in light-skinned individua … nscreens are beneficial for patients with visible light-induced photodermatoses and those with hyperpigmentation disorders such as melasma and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation.

The five melanocortin receptors (MC1R-MC5R) are involved in numerous biological pathways, including steroidogenesis, pigmentation, and food intake. In particular, MC3R and MC4R knockout mice suggest that the MC3R and MC4R regulate energy homeostasis in a non-redundant manner. While MC4R-selective agonists have been utilized as appetite modulating agents, the lack of MC3R-selective agonists has impeded progress in modulating this receptor in vivo. In this study, the (pI)DPhe position of the tetrapeptide Ac-His-Arg-(pI)DPhe-Tic-NH2 (an MC3R agonist/MC4R antagonist ligand) was investigated with a

Antioxidants are deemed useful in controlling oxidative stress associated with extrinsic skin aging and pigmentation disorders. Resveratrol is a polyphenol compound found in many edible plants such as Vitis vinifera, and its inhibitory effects on the catalytic activity, gene expression, and posttranslational modifications of tyrosinase, a key enzyme in the melanin biosynthetic pathway, provide a mechanistic basis for its antimelanogenic effects seen in melanocytic cells, three-dimensionally reconstituted skin models, and in vivo animal models. As a potent antioxidant and a modulator of nuclear…

Acquired brachial cutaneous dyschromatosis (ABCD) is an acquired disorder of pigmentary change that presents as chronic, asymptomatic, geographic-shaped, gray-brown patches, consisting of mixed hyper and hypopigmented macules on the dorsal aspect of the forearms. We report a case of a 40-year-old male who presented with asymptomatic, multiple brown-colored macules on the outer aspects of both arms. He had no history of hypertension and had never taken angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors. He also denied chronic sun exposure history. Histologic examination demonstrated epidermal atrophy, in

BACKGROUND: McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) is characterized by the triad of polyostotic bone fibrous dysplasia (PFD), endocrine disorders, and café-au-lait skin pigmentation. Ninety percent of MAS patients have fibrous dysplasia (FD) craniofacial lesions. Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) has been described as an adverse side effect of bisphosphonate therapy. The aim of the study was to investigate evidence of clinical and/or radiological signs of ONJ in FD/MAS pediatric patients due to bisphosphonate therapy and describe odontoiatric tools in this population.
METHODS: Thirteen FD/MAS patients w

Clinical signs of hyperandrogenism include hirsutism, acne and/or seborrhea, androgenic alopecia, menstrual disorders and at maximum virilization. Hirsutism is defined by the presence of a coarse and pigmented hair in male territory. In the Caucasian populations, a Ferriman Gallwey score ≥ 6 means hirsutism. Polycystic ovary syndrome is the most common cause of hyerandrogenism in women (70 % of cases) but must remain a diagnosis of exclusion. A neoplasm origin is suspected in case of recent onset of hyperandrogenism, which is rapidly progressive and with signs of virilization. The serum level

INTRODUCTION: In dark skin patients, hypopigmentation is the most disfiguring condition. Very few studies on hypochromic disorders have been conducted in specialized health centers. The present study is aimed to describe the etiologies of hypochromic patches in dermatological area, in Bamako.
METHODS: We carried out a cross sectional study in the Dermatology Clinic of the "Centre National d'Appui à la lutte contre la Maladie (CNAM, Ex Institut Marchoux)". All acquired hypochromic patches (HP) were selected. HP was defined as a "skin patch lighter in pigmentation than normal surrounding skin w

We report a case of a 64-year-old man with POEMS (polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal gammopathy and skin changes) syndrome that had been previously misdiagnosed as systemic sclerosis. He had typical symptoms of POEMS syndrome, however, the existence of skin sclerosis, contracture of fingers and pigmentation were similar to that of systemic sclerosis. Ten patients, including the patient discussed in this case, visited our department between 1990 and 2011. Among them, five patients had skin sclerosis. Therefore, we compared skin lesions and clinical/laboratory features of P

BACKGROUND: Generalized vitiligo is an autoimmune disease of skin pigmentation that is associated with increased prevalence of other autoimmune diseases, particularly autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD; principally Hashimoto's disease and Graves' disease), both in vitiligo patients and their close relatives, suggesting a heritable predisposition involving, in part, shared susceptibility genes.
SUMMARY: This review summarizes current knowledge of vitiligo epidemiology and genetics, highlighting recent findings from genome-wide approaches to disease gene identification, emphasizing susceptibility

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment in patients with non-neoplastic epithelial disorders of the vulva.
METHOD: We reviewed 41 cases of lichen sclerosus, 38 cases of squamous cell hyperplasia, and 17 mixed cases treated by HIFU from April 2004 to July 2008 at the Women's Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine. Biopsy specimens were assessed with light microscopy before and after treatment.
RESULTS: Pruritus and signs of vulvar lesions were dramatically improved following HIFU treatment, without severe complications, and 90.23% of

Patterned pigmentary disturbances are seen in a large variety of human genetic disorders. Cytogenetic studies have provided evidence that such skin lesions often reflect chromosomal mosaicism. In addition to the well-known pattern of Blaschko's lines a classification of several distinct types was proposed by Happle. This report add the case of a boy with an unusual mosaic-like distribution of skin pigmentation and a further chromosomal anomaly which has not been described in pigmentary mosaicism previously. The proband was born after an uneventful pregnancy and delivery. Developmental mileston

Human populations native to areas of intense sunlight tend to be heavily melanized. Previous explanations for this relationship have invoked only weak selective pressures. To test the hypothesis that dark pigmentation may protect against photolysis of crucial light-sensitive vitamins and metabolites by ultraviolet light, folate was used as a model. It was found that exposure of human plasma in vitro to simulated strong sunlight causes 30 to 50 percent loss of folate within 60 minutes. Furthermore, light-skinned patients exposed to ultraviolet light for dermatologic disorders have abnormally lo

Over the past 6 years sixty-eight patients have been treated with 1% or 3% 4-isopropylcatechol (4-IPC). Fifty-four had melasma, the others a variety of disorders of pigmentation. Two-thirds of the patients were significantly improved. Twenty patients had skin irritation due to 4-IPC and four developed an allergic contact dermatitis. One patient developed confetti-like areas of depigmentation in the 4-IPC-treated areas. Light and electron microscopic studies showed that in the 4-IPC-treated areas there was a loss and damage of the melanocytes, but the keratinocytes and Langerhans cells were una

BACKGROUND: Alkaptonuria is a rare inherited metabolic disorder caused by impaired homogentisic acid metabolism. Ochronotic arthropathy is a late musculoskeletal manifestation and may mimic ordinary degenerative osteoarthritis in older adults. This diagnostic overlap may delay recognition of the underlying systemic metabolic disease.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old woman presented with progressive pain and restricted motion of the left knee and hip for four years. Preoperative imaging suggested advanced degenerative arthropathy. However, she had a long-standing history of urine darkening aft
