Fibroblast growth factor-2 with beta-tricalcium phosphate for the deep and wide intrabony defect reaching the apex and Class II furcation involvement of a mandibular molar.

BACKGROUND: The basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) drug formulation, human recombinant FGF-2 and hydroxypropylcellulose, developed in Japan, has been confirmed to induce effective periodontal regeneration. However, in cases with minimal residual bone walls or vertical bone defects fused with furcation involvement, FGF-2 alone does not achieve ideal periodontal regeneration. Therefore, it is necessary to attempt to use FGF-2 in combination with bone grafting materials. Beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) has been developed as a bone graft material and has a long history of use. Its advantage

Dosimetric impact of coplanar and non-coplanar arc arrangements in VMAT-based lung SABR.

INTRODUCTION: Although coplanar and non-coplanar volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) have been widely investigated, the effect of organizing two full rotations as sequential sub-arcs within one Monaco beam entry or as one arc in each of two beam entries remains insufficiently characterized for lung stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR). This study compared four Monaco workflows differing in arc organization and coplanarity. METHODS: This retrospective dosimetric planning study included 20 medically inoperable patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (18 peripheral and two

Nationwide study of cutaneous basal cell carcinoma incidence trends in Norway, 2012-2022.

BACKGROUND: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common cancer in fair-skinned populations world-wide. However, population-based incidence is rarely reported as most countries do not register BCC. In Norway, melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers (excluding BCC) are the cancers with the steepest incidence increase since 2000. However, the incidence of BCC remains unknown due to lack of registration. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to utilise archived pathology reports in the Cancer Registry of Norway (CRN) to estimate the national BCC incidence. METHODS: The CRN receives pathology reports for all ver

The Changing Epidemiology of Type 1 Diabetes: A Global Perspective.

The prevalence of type 1 diabetes is increasing, with significant implications for public health systems worldwide. This review provides a global overview of the current epidemiology of type 1 diabetes, examining the trends, risk factors, and regional variations in incidence. We explore the influence of genetic, environmental, and socio-economic factors on the rising incidence of type 1 diabetes. The review also highlights temporal trends in the management of type 1 diabetes and the risk of mortality and morbidity from acute and long-term complications, including hypoglycaemia, diabetic ketoac

Metformin use in prediabetes: A review of evidence and a focus on metabolic features among peri-menopausal women.

The prevalence of prediabetes has more than doubled over the past two decades. Although hormones associated with the menstrual cycle may offer some protection against diabetes by enhancing insulin sensitivity and suppressing gluconeogenesis, the prevalence of diabetes among women remains high at 10.5%. Notably, among the perimenopausal population, the prevalence catches up to-and even surpasses-that of men starting from the 70-74 age group, according to the 2021 International Diabetes Federation (IDF) report. This narrative review examines the benefits and potential risks of metformin across d

Including nonrandomized evidence in living systematic reviews: lessons learned from the COVID-NMA initiative.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are more likely to be included in evidence syntheses of health interventions due to their methodological rigor. However, the integration of nonrandomized studies (NRSs) may be necessary, as was seen during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the emergence of variants of concern. We aimed to examine the body of evidence, randomized and nonrandomized, on COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness (VE) during the emergence of the Delta variant and to share lessons learned from including nonrandomized evidence alongside randomized evidence in the COVID-N

Many randomized trials in a large systematic review were not registered and had evidence of selective outcome reporting: a metaepidemiological study.

OBJECTIVES: The primary objectives were to describe characteristics of trial registration in the chronic low back pain (CLBP) field and assess the association of trial registration status (registered vs unregistered, prospectively registered vs retrospectively registered) with risk of bias, sufficient sample size, quality of reporting, and treatment effect estimates. Secondary objectives were to describe trial registration consistency with the final report and assess its association with risk of bias, sufficient sample size, and treatment effect estimates. Characterizing the Patient Journey in Multiple Myeloma: Qualitative Review.

BACKGROUND: The patient experience of multiple myeloma (MM) is multifaceted and varies substantially between individuals. Current published information on the patient perspective and treatment of MM is limited, making it difficult to gain insights into patient needs regarding the condition. OBJECTIVE: In this review, a combined research method approach (ie, the review of published literature and social media posts) was undertaken to provide insight into patients' perspectives on the burden and treatment of MM, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the impact of MM on caregivers of patients

Motivation-informed digital reminders were no more effective than standard reminders for trial task completion in a randomized Study Within A Trial (SWAT).

OBJECTIVES: Digital reminders are widely used in clinical trials, but their design is rarely evidence-based. We evaluated the effectiveness of two types of digital reminders for trial task completion. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: This randomized Study Within A Trial (SWAT) was embedded in the MEL-SELF trial which evaluates patient-led vs. clinician-led melanoma surveillance. SWAT participants were randomized 1:1 to motivation-informed or standard digital reminders for two tasks: monthly health-resource diaries (all participants) and 3-monthly image submissions of self-detected skin lesions (MEL-

Late-onset medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw 11 years after IV bisphosphonates following implant placement.

BACKGROUND: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a recognized complication of intravenous (IV) bisphosphonate therapy, particularly following invasive dental procedures such as extractions or implant placement. Although the risk of MRONJ decreases after discontinuation of therapy, prolonged skeletal retention of bisphosphonates necessitates careful long-term evaluation and surgical planning. METHODS: An American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) (II 72-year-old male with history of high-dose IV pamidronate therapy for multiple myeloma (last dose 11 years prior) presented fo

Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Electrocardiography for Monitoring Serum Potassium Dynamics in Patients With Severe Hypokalemia.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Severe hypokalemia requires prompt management and close surveillance. Although artificial intelligence-enabled electrocardiography (AI-ECG) rapidly detects severe hypokalemia, its application for monitoring serum potassium (K+) dynamics during treatment remains unexplored. This study assessed AI-ECG performance in monitoring K+ changes during supplementation. STUDY DESIGN: Multicenter retrospective cohort study. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: 191 adults with severe hypokalemia (laboratory-measured [lab-K+] ≤ 2.5 mmol/L; matched ECG-K+ < 3.5 mmol/L) and ≥1 follow-up paired mea

Applying the GREET checklist for assessing reporting of evidence-based practice educational interventions and teaching showed inter-rater discrepancies and item-level challenges.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyze in-depth inter-rater discrepancies in Guideline for Reporting Evidence-Based Practice Educational Interventions and Teaching (GREET) item ratings between two first-time GREET users (GREET-naïve) data extractors, and to explore challenges in using the GREET checklist as a tool to assess the completeness of reporting. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a secondary analysis, conducted on the literature synthesized in a prior scoping review. Two independent raters, first time users of the GREET checklist, evaluated the trials using a modified version of the

Developmental Differences in a Hippocampal-Cingulate Pathway Involved in Learned Safety Following Interpersonal Trauma Exposure.

OBJECTIVE: Nearly 65% of youth experience trauma, and up to one-third of youth with trauma exposure face profound mental health sequelae. There remains a need to elucidate factors that contribute to psychopathology following trauma exposure, and to optimize interventions for youth who do not benefit sufficiently from existing treatments. Here, we probe safety signal learning (SSL), which is a mechanism of fear reduction that leverages learned safety to inhibit fear in the presence of threat-associated stimuli and has been shown to attenuate fear via a hippocampal-cingulate--specifically, a dor

Enzyme replacement therapy in lysosomal acid lipase deficiency (LAL-D): a systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: Lysosomal acid lipase deficiency (LAL-D) is a very rare genetic abnormality caused by LIPA gene mutation. The disease has two distinct clinical variants in humans: Wolman disease in infants and cholesteryl ester storage disease in children and adults. Both conditions are characterized by elevated serum transaminases, dyslipidaemia, severe liver steatosis and accelerated fibrosis or cirrhosis, contributing to its high rate of early mortality. Recently sebelipase alfa (recombinant human LAL) was launched to address its underlying pathology. This systematic review evaluates the safety

The suboptimal methodological quality of non-Cochrane reviews on hyoscine butylbromide to shorten labor duration raises concerns about their conclusions: a meta-research study.

OBJECTIVES: Hyoscine butylbromide (HBB) is commonly used off-label in labor wards. However, a Cochrane review raised concerns about the quality of evidence on HBB in childbirth, leading to the World Health Organization's (WHO's) disapproval of HBB for intrapartum care. Since then, newer non-Cochrane systematic reviews on HBB to shorten labor duration have emerged. We assessed the methodological quality of these reviews to determine their trustworthiness. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We critically appraised the quality of conduct for one Cochrane and seven non-Cochrane reviews with randomized con
