Binocular gaze was measured accurately under natural conditions with the Maryland Revolving Field Monitor to determine how visual-clarity affects gaze-accuracy. The gaze of 3 unrestrained, seated subjects (2 presbyopes and 1 myope) was recorded as they tapped 4 LEDs with a long, narrow rod cemented to a thimble worn on their index fingers. They wore positive contact lenses, permitting very clear vision only nearby, within 35 cm. This task was hard. It took more than 7 seconds to complete. We reviewed the scientific literature on monovision to compare the visual performance of monovision patients with that of others wearing more traditional prescriptions. BACKGROUND: The use of anti-reflection coatings (AR) for spectacle lenses is steadily increasing. These ultra-thin coatings reduce reflections in lenses, increasing light transmittance about 8% (from 91% to 99%). We studied whether task performance improves during the initial wearing period of selected presbyopic contact lens corrections. Multifocal intraocular lenses allow pseudophakic patients to obtain good near and distance visual acuities without an additional near correction. We report our experiences in implanting diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses in prepresbyopic patients with acquired unilateral cataracts and assess their postoperative visual acuities and stereoscopic vision. Accommodative function in patients following cataract surgery is discussed.
