Probiotic supplementation reduces the risk of bacterial translocation in experimental short bowel syndrome.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Probiotics are live organisms that survive passage through the gastrointestinal tract and have beneficial effects on the host. Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium have been recommended for cholesterol lowering, acute diarrhea, prevention of cancer, or inflammatory bowel disease. On the other hand, after massive bowel resection, bacterial overgrowth is frequent and favors bacterial translocation (BT). The possible beneficial effects of Bifidobacterium lactis (BL) administration on BT in experimental short bowel syndrome (SBS), have not been investigated. The aim of this study …

AcmA-mediated non-GMO probiotic engineering for functional jujube juice fermentation.

Probiotics are indispensable functional microorganisms in food fermentation with increasingly promising application prospects. Although genetically modified probiotics show great potential in improving the quality of fermented foods, their practical application is hampered by ethical controversies and safety concerns. To address these issues, the sacB gene encoding levansucrase was cloned from Bacillus atrophaeus in this study. Three non-genetically modified (non-GMO) engineered strains were constructed via the binding of AcmA to peptidoglycan through key hydrogen-bonding residues. In jujube j…

Prospecting and characterization of potential probiotic lactobacilli from animal gut and food sources.

Indigenous Lactobacillus species from African environments remain insufficiently characterised, despite their potential to serve as locally adapted, cost-effective probiotic candidates. This study explored plant- and poultry-derived lactobacilli to identify strains with functional traits relevant to gastrointestinal survival, host interaction, and food-related applications. Eighteen isolates recovered from chicken gut, tomatoes, cucumbers, and bananas were identified by 16S rRNA sequencing and assessed in vitro for acid and bile tolerance, bile-salt hydrolase (BSH) activity, exopolysaccharide

Impact of acetaminophen on the growth kinetics and metabolite production of probiotic lactic acid bacteria.

Bacterial interactions within the human gut microbiota are dynamic and closely linked to host health. These interactions are time-dependent and can be modulated by probiotic bacteria through metabolite production, environmental modification such as pH changes, and niche occupation. However, commonly used human-targeted drugs may alter these microbial dynamics. This study evaluated the effect of acetaminophen, a widely used over-the-counter drug, on the growth dynamics of a probiotic lactic acid bacterium within synthetic gut microbiota communities. The growth of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lacti

Overcoming Candida biofilm resistance: targeting persister cells with probiotic-derived metabolites.

Candida biofilms pose a significant complication in clinical settings due to antifungal drug tolerance and the presence of persister cells. Biofilm-mediated resistance is influenced by several associated factors, including the high density and extracellular matrix characteristics of the biofilm, metabolic downregulation, efflux pump activity, and stress-response signaling pathways, which ultimately diminish drug permeability and effectiveness. Within biofilms, persister cells form a small subpopulation of cells with unique phenotypic traits that enable them to survive lethal antifungal exposur
