Patellofemoral instability is a common and clinically relevant disorder of multifactorial causes. Several concomitant problems such as genua valga, hyperlaxity, injuries or sports-related overuse may contribute to the development of instability and recurrent patellar dislocations. A thorough diagnosis is of paramount importance to delineate every contributing factor. This includes radiographic modalities and advanced imaging such as magnetic resonance imaging or torsional analyses. The authors recommend non-operative management (including physiotherapy, gait and proprioceptive training, orthos

Patients suffering from a segmental and somatic dysfunction of the cervical spine often present a wide variety of clinical symptoms related to cervicobrachial or cervicocephalic syndrome. These symptoms might evolve out of complex neural intersegmental or trigeminocervical interactions in the brain stem or the spinal cord of the cervical spine. After the exclusion of life-threatening preconditions, a careful physical examination with aspects of manual medicine aspects might unmask the cervical dysfunction as the primary cause of the symptoms. Treatment with manual medicine on the basis of a se

A series of clinical studies have shown that botulinum toxin can treat major depression. Subjects suffering from unipolar depression may experience a quick, strong, and sustained improvement in the symptoms of depression after a single glabellar treatment with botulinum toxin.Preliminary data suggest that botulinum toxin therapy may also be effective in the treatment of other mental disorders characterized by an excess of negative emotions, such as borderline personality disorder. The mood-lifting effect of botulinum toxin therapy is probably mediated by the interruption of a proprioceptive fee

Motor training consisting of repetitive thumb movements results in encoding of motor memories in the primary motor cortex. It is not known if proprioceptive input originating in the training movements is sufficient to produce this effect. In this study, we compared the ability of training consisting of voluntary (active) and passively-elicited (passive) movements to induce this form of plasticity. Active training led to successful encoding accompanied by characteristic changes in corticomotor excitability, while passive training did not. These results support a pivotal role for voluntary motor

We report the unusual seizures in a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The convulsive disorder began acutely as partial somatomotor status epilepticus and with diffuse EEG slowing. The seizures then became myoclonic-atonic (drop attacks) and an EEG focus appeared on the left paramedian centro-parietal areas, activated by proprioceptive stimuli. Despite the severity of the clinical picture at onset, the seizures showed a benign course, and disappeared on carbamazepine therapy. We think that this epileptic syndrome may have been caused by diffuse iatrogenic encephalopathy, probably relat

The interrelationship of the activity of specific and nonspecific afferent systems in the mechanism of changes in the electrical activity of the cortex under the influence of vibration was studied under chronic experimental conditions. The character of the postvibrational shifts in the vestibulo- and reticulocortical evoked responses in the presence of the isolated and combined disengagement of the specific (vestibular) and nonspecific afferent systems of the brain was investigated. It was established that vestibular afferentation plays a significant role in the mechanism of postvibrational sh

Conduction velocity of A delta fibers of the human peripheral nerves was measured by using pain-related somatosensory evoked potentials following CO2 laser stimulation. It was found to be approximately 9 m/s in the forearm as well as in the lower leg. Because conventional conduction study using electric stimulation reflects only functions of large myelinated fibers related to deep proprioceptive and tactile sensations, the present noninvasive and simple, novel method is the only laboratory examination currently available to investigate physiological functions of the small diameter fibers media

A 41-yr-old woman with primary biliary cirrhosis developed weakness and wasting in proximal muscles, areflexia, and decreased proprioceptive and vibratory sensation. Investigations revealed law serum levels of vitamin E and electromyographic and muscle biopsy changes consistent with a neuropathy. Sural nerve histology demonstrated axonal dystrophy with patchy demyelination. These features closely resemble a neurologic syndrome associated with chronic cholestatic liver disease and vitamin E deficiency in children. Adults with chronic cholestasis may also be susceptible to neurologic damage from

The nystagmus due to vertebro-basilar artery insufficiency is that nystagmus which is induced by torsion and extension of the neck, continued for more than 3 minutes, after nystagmus of other types has been excluded. It is of vascular origin, in contra-distinction to nystagmus of cervical origin, which is proprioceptive. It permits the detection of sub-clinical vertebro-basilar insufficiency, and it should be elicited before any operation which requires prolonged cervical rotation. It is a very simple method which can be performed at the end of the classical torsion swing test, and we have fou

Trigeminal nerve ophthalmic and motor division function was assessed clinically and electrically in 32 patients who had undergone various surgical procedures for trigeminal neuralgia. Using known electrophysiological techniques, the orbicularis oculi and jaw reflexes were tested in all subjects. Abnormalities of the orbicularis oculi reflex were anticipated on the basis of ophthalmic division anaesthesia. However, jaw reflex abnormalities appeared in operated cases with no clinical or electromyographic evidence of masseter denervation. These results were unexpected, and imply that the proprioc

The active self, understood as the embodied sense of self arising from goal-directed action and interaction with the environment, is supported by sensorimotor processes including multisensory integration and proprioception. Atypical self-representation in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been proposed to relate to differences in these processes. To clarify this relationship, we conducted a systematic conceptual review of 37 empirical studies published between 2010 and August 2025 examining multisensory and bodily components of the active self in ASD. The literature was synthesized across thr…

The human brain stores and retrieves tactile experiences, allowing object recognition by touch, the definition of haptic preferences, and the retrieval of past bodily experiences. However, little is known about the spatial code of tactile body memories, particularly whether encoding takes place in a body-centered (tactile) reference frame, not influenced by hand posture or visual cues, or whether it takes place in an external reference frame, where tactile information is integrated with proprioceptive and visual information. Here, we combined a passive tactile pattern memory task with the cros

Recurrent hamstring injuries are highly prevalent amongst sporting populations. It has been hypothesised that pain from an initial hamstring injury may induce reorganisation of somatosensory representations that could contribute to reinjury. However, because of the cross-sectional nature of existing research, it remains unknown whether somatosensory changes are a cause or effect of pain or if they are driven by other potentially confounding factors. Here, we explored the effect of experimentally induced sustained hamstring pain on tasks that interrogate somatosensory and spatial representation

The Sense of Ownership (SoO) and the Sense of Agency (SoA) are two key components of bodily self-consciousness. In this experiment, we investigated how they are affected by variations in the ecological validity of the moving Rubber Hand Illusion (mRHI) paradigm, which typically include three movement conditions: active congruent, passive congruent, and active incongruent. These conditions were either in a session in which no auditory feedback associated with finger-tapping was eliminated, or in a session in which such a feedback occurred. Since the presence of the auditory feedback more closel

INTRODUCTION: Many researchers took advantage of the well-established rubber hand illusion (RHI) paradigm to explore the link between the sense of body ownership and the different brain structures and networks. Here, we aimed to review the studies that have investigated this phenomenon by means of neurophysiological techniques.
METHODS: The MEDLINE, accessed by Pubmed and EMBASE electronic databases, was searched using the medical subject headings: "Rubber hand illusion" AND "Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)" OR "Evoked potentials (EP)" OR "Event related potentials (ERP)" OR "Electroen

BACKGROUND: Age-related changes, which include increased trunk and hip stiffness, negatively influence postural balance. While previous studies suggest no net-effect of trunk and hip stiffness on initial trip-recovery responses, no study to date has examined potential effects during the dynamic restabilisation phase following foot contact.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Does increased trunk and hip stiffness, in isolation from other ageing effects, negatively influence balance during the restabilisation phase of reactive stepping.
METHODS: Balance perturbations were applied using a tether-release paradi

Children with developmental dyslexia exhibit delayed reading abilities and various sensori-motor deficits. The way these various symptoms interact remain poorly understood. The objective of this study was twofold. First, we aimed to investigate whether postural control was impaired in dyslexic children when cognitive demands are increased. Second, we checked whether this effect could be reduced significantly by a treatment aiming to recalibrate ocular proprioception. Twelve dyslexic and fifteen treated dyslexic children (>3 months of treatment) were compared with twelve non-dyslexic children i…

During eccentric exercise contracting muscles are forcibly lengthened, to act as a brake to control motion of the body. A consequence of eccentric exercise is damage to muscle fibres. It has been reported that following the damage there is disturbance to proprioception, in particular, the senses of force and limb position. Force sense was tested in an isometric force-matching task using the elbow flexor muscles of both arms before and after the muscles in one arm had performed 50 eccentric contractions at a strength of 30% of a maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). The exercise led to an immedi…

STUDY DESIGN: Reposition sense of lumbar curvature was assessed as a function of trunk flexion, trunk asymmetry, and target lumbar curvature using a repeated-measures design and an active-active proprioception paradigm.
OBJECTIVE: The objectives of the research were to measure the ability of the subjects to sense and control the lumbar curvature in different lifting postures and to see if error in the lumbar curvature would increase in high-risk postures.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The risk of low back disorders (LBDs) is related to trunk posture, with greater risk reported in flexed and as…
