We report 3 cases of muscle tension dysphonia (MTD), all involving women 44 to 68 years old, recovered using proton pump inhibitors (PPI). Case 1 had open posterior commissure (MTD Type I) and Cases 2 and 3 supraglottis compression (MTD Type II, III). It is generally assumed that functional dysphonia with maladjustment of laryngeal muscle tension is caused by improper phonation and/or emotional disorder. Our cases, however, suggest that laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) may also relate to the occurrence of MTD.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent hemorrhage with secondary glaucoma is a rare but serious complication following proton beam irradiation (PBI) of iris melanoma. We report a case in which photodynamic therapy (PDT) was successfully used to treat this complication.
METHODS: The history, clinical features and management of a patient with iris melanoma who was treated with PBI and later developed recurrent hyphema and increased intraocular pressure are presented. We report a case study of a 54-year-old Japanese woman who persistently suffered from a sour-taste sensation in her mouth for 10 years, and was treated with a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI). INTRODUCTION: Our main goals were to study the survival of patients with uveal melanomas involving the ciliary body 5 and 10 years after treatment and to review prognosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study investigated 106 tumors (27 ciliary body melanomas and 79 choroidal-ciliary melanomas) of patients treated between June 1983 and April 1998. Seventy-two patients were treated with 106-ruthenium applicators and 34 were treated with proton therapy. Some large tumors or recurrences required a second treatment.
