Effects of electrode size and spacing on sensory modalities in the phantom thumb perception area for the forearm amputees.

Tactile sensory feedback plays a key role in accomplishing the dexterous manipulation of prosthetic hands for the amputees, and the non-invasive transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) of the phantom finger perception (PFP) area would be an effective way to realize sensory feedback clinically. In order to realize the high-spatial-resolution tactile sensory feedback in the PFP region, we investigated the effects of electrode size and spacing on the tactile sensations for potentially optimizing the surface electrode array configuration. Six forearm-amputated subjects were recruited in

Macular pigment carotenoids in the retina and occipital cortex are related in humans.

OBJECTIVES: Lutein and zeaxanthin are dietary carotenoids that preferentially accumulate in the macular region of the retina. Together with meso-zeaxanthin, a conversion product of lutein in the macula, they form the macular pigment. Lutein is also the predominant carotenoid in human brain tissue and lutein status is associated with cognitive function in adults. The study objective was to evaluate the relationship between retinal and brain lutein and zeaxanthin in humans. METHODS: Donated brain tissue (occipital cortex and hippocampus) and matched retina were obtained from the National Diseas

Temporal summation in children with a history of retinopathy of prematurity.

PURPOSE: To assess temporal summation in children with a history of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) by determining the critical duration (tCRIT) for complete temporal summation under rod-mediated conditions. From prior ERG studies, it is known that the kinetics of activation of phototransduction are prolonged in the ROP rod photoreceptor. METHODS: Dark-adapted thresholds for detecting 10° diameter stimuli with durations from 10 to 640 ms were measured. A two-alternative, spatial, forced-choice psychophysical procedure was used. The tCRIT for complete summation was estimated in former preterm

Impaired Limb Proprioception in Adults With Spasmodic Dysphonia.

OBJECTIVES: Focal dystonia of the head and neck are associated with a loss of kinesthetic acuity at muscles distant from the dystonic sites. That is, while the motor deficits in focal dystonia are confined, the associated somatosensory deficits are generalized. This is the first systematic study to examine, if patients diagnosed with spasmodic dystonia (SD) show somatosensory impairments similar in scope to other forms of focal dystonia. METHODS: Proprioceptive acuity (ability to discriminate between two stimuli) for forearm position and motion sense was assessed in 14 spasmodic dystonia subj

Reliability-dependent contributions of visual orientation cues in parietal cortex.

Creating accurate 3D representations of the world from 2D retinal images is a fundamental task for the visual system. However, the reliability of different 3D visual signals depends inherently on viewing geometry, such as how much an object is slanted in depth. Human perceptual studies have correspondingly shown that texture and binocular disparity cues for object orientation are combined according to their slant-dependent reliabilities. Where and how this cue combination occurs in the brain is currently unknown. Here, we search for neural correlates of this property in the macaque caudal intr

Developmental hearing loss impairs signal detection in noise: putative central mechanisms.

Listeners with hearing loss have difficulty processing sounds in noisy environments. This is most noticeable for speech perception, but is reflected in a basic auditory processing task: detecting a tonal signal in a noise background, i.e., simultaneous masking. It is unresolved whether the mechanisms underlying simultaneous masking arise from the auditory periphery or from the central auditory system. Poor detection in listeners with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is attributed to cochlear hair cell damage. However, hearing loss alters neural processing in the central auditory system. Addit

Another perspective on anosognosia: Self-observation in video replay improves motor awareness.

Anosognosia for hemiplegia (AHP), or unawareness of motor deficits contralateral to a brain lesion, has lasting negative implications for the management and rehabilitation of patients. A recent, bedside psychophysical intervention, namely self-observation by video replay, lead to a lasting remission of severe AHP in an acute stroke patient (Fotopoulou, A., Rudd, A., Holmes, P., & Kopelman, M. (2009). Self-observation reinstates motor awareness in anosognosia for hemiplegia. Neuropsychologia, 47, 1256-1260). This procedure has been adjusted and applied here, as the basis of two intervention pro

Modified areal cartography in auditory cortex following early- and late-onset deafness.

Cross-modal plasticity following peripheral sensory loss enables deprived cortex to provide enhanced abilities in remaining sensory systems. These functional adaptations have been demonstrated in cat auditory cortex following early-onset deafness in electrophysiological and psychophysical studies. However, little information is available concerning any accompanying structural compensations. To examine the influence of sound experience on areal cartography, auditory cytoarchitecture was examined in hearing cats, early-deaf cats, and cats with late-onset deafness. Cats were deafened shortly afte

Cortical pitch regions in humans respond primarily to resolved harmonics and are located in specific tonotopic regions of anterior auditory cortex.

Pitch is a defining perceptual property of many real-world sounds, including music and speech. Classically, theories of pitch perception have differentiated between temporal and spectral cues. These cues are rendered distinct by the frequency resolution of the ear, such that some frequencies produce "resolved" peaks of excitation in the cochlea, whereas others are "unresolved," providing a pitch cue only via their temporal fluctuations. Despite longstanding interest, the neural structures that process pitch, and their relationship to these cues, have remained controversial. Here, using fMRI in

Contralateral efferent regulation of human cochlear tuning: behavioural observations and computer model simulations.

In binaural listening, the two cochleae do not act as independent sound receptors; their functioning is linked via the contralateral medial olivo-cochlear reflex (MOCR), which can be activated by contralateral sounds. The present study aimed at characterizing the effect of a contralateral white noise (CWN) on psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs). PTCs were measured in forward masking for probe frequencies of 500 Hz and 4 kHz, with and without CWN. The sound pressure level of the probe was fixed across conditions. PTCs for different response criteria were measured by using various masker-probe t

Psychoacoustic analyses of cochlear mechanisms in tinnitus patients with normal auditory thresholds.

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus is often related to auditory dysfunction. We hypothesised that, among individuals with normal auditory thresholds, the mechanism of frequency selectivity might differ between subjects with and without tinnitus. Our objective was to identify any differences between normal-hearing individuals with tinnitus and those without in terms of psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) and threshold-equalising noise (TEN) test results. DESIGN: We determined PTCs and performed the TEN test. STUDY SAMPLE: We evaluated 57 individuals, 16 with bilateral tinnitus (tinnitus-group) and 41 withou

Reading performance in middle-aged adults with declines in accommodation.

The present study investigated the effects of presbyopia on the reading ability of middle-aged adults in a Japanese reading context, using the rapid serial visual presentation paradigm. Japanese words, each consisting of three characters, were sequentially presented at the same location on a display screen. Participants were instructed to read the words aloud as accurately as possible, irrespective of their order within the sequence. Experiment 1 showed that the reading performance for the presbyopes was far worse for the near-viewing (35 cm) than for the far-viewing (70 cm) conditions when th

Intranasal trigeminal chemosensitivity in patients with postviral and post-traumatic olfactory dysfunction.

CONCLUSIONS: The olfactory and intranasal trigeminal systems are closely connected. With regard to intranasal trigeminal event-related potential (ERP), patients with olfactory dysfunction (OD) showed longer latency and lower amplitude, which indicated decreased trigeminal sensitivity. Different age, etiology, and olfactory status also affect trigeminal sensitivity differently. OBJECTIVE: OD is a common symptom in the rhinology clinic. ERP is considered an important method to evaluate chemosensitivity. The aim of this study was to investigate changes of intranasal trigeminal sense in patients

Growth of suppression using distortion-product otoacoustic emission measurements in hearing-impaired humans.

Growth of distortion-product otoacoustic emission suppression was measured in 65 subjects with mild-to-moderate sensorineural hearing loss (HI). Measurements were made at four probe frequencies (f(2)) and up to five L(2) levels. Eleven suppressor frequencies (f(3)) were used for each f(2), L(2) combination. These data were compared to data from normal-hearing (NH) subjects (Gorga et al., 2011a). In both NH and HI subjects, growth of suppression depended on the relation between f(2) and f(3), such that the slope was close to one when f(3) ≈ f(2), steeper than one when f(3) < f(2), and shallower

Voice-related quality of life in adults with neurofibromatosis type 1.

OBJECTIVE: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant neurocutaneous disorder, which occurs in about one in 3000-4000 people. Its hallmark features include multiple café-au-lait spots and neurofibromas. Voice characteristics of NF1 patients have been documented using both subjective and objective evaluations. However, the relative impact of these voice characteristics on daily activities has, as far as we know, not been examined yet. METHODS: Thirty adults with NF1 were asked to complete the Flemish Dutch version of the Voice Handicap Index (VHI). Additionally, the level of sever

People watching: visual, motor, and social processes in the perception of human movement.

Successful social behavior requires the accurate perception and interpretation of other peoples' actions. In the last decade, significant progress has been made in understanding how the human visual system analyzes bodily motion. Neurophysiological studies have identified two neural areas, the superior temporal sulcus (STS) and the premotor cortex, which play key roles in the visual perception of human movement. Patterns of neural activity in these areas are reflective of psychophysical measures of visual sensitivity to human movement. Both vary as a function of stimulus orientation and global
