Point-of-Care Ultrasound: A High-Tech Solution for Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a transformative tool for anesthesiology in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where limited access to advanced medical imaging, unreliable power, and scarce resources hinder patient care. This technology's portability, affordability, and diagnostic versatility address critical gaps, enabling better preoperative assessment, intraoperative monitoring, and emergency interventions. POCUS facilitates procedures such as catheter placement and nerve blocks, diagnoses conditions such as pneumothorax, and evaluates cardiac function, all without ionizing radia

Emergence of Circulating Tumor DNA as a Precision Biomarker in Lung Cancer Radiation Oncology and Beyond.

Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) is emerging as a transformative biomarker in the management of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This review focuses on its role in detecting minimal residual disease (MRD), predicting treatment response, and guiding therapeutic decision-making in radiation oncology and immunotherapy. Key studies demonstrate ctDNA's prognostic value, particularly in identifying relapse risk and refining patient stratification for curative-intent and consolidative treatments. Future research is essential to standardize ctDNA assays, optimize integration into clinical workflows, a

Focal therapy for prostate cancer.

Traditional treatments for localized prostate cancer include radical prostatectomy or radiation therapy but pose challenges due to treatment related side effects, namely erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence. In recent years, focal therapy has emerged as a viable treatment option for localized low-intermediate risk prostate cancer in carefully selected patients. Short and medium-term studies show acceptable cancer control outcomes and reduced morbidity when comparing focal therapy to whole gland treatment for prostate cancer, however there is paucity of long-term studies. Here we revie

Patients with cancer in the COVID-19 era: the clinical trial issue.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) hospital reorganization may result in reduced ability for the hospital to fully use its armamentarium for battling cancer. Thus different therapeutic modalities have been recommended. During the pandemic, despite regulatory agencies' recommendations, several considerations and doubts remain for oncologic clinical trials. Considering patients who had been enrolled before the pandemic, and who plan to take the study medication, the situation becomes complicated. These patients should undergo monitoring visits, blood sampling, questionnaire, physical examinatio

Magnetic resonance imaging of the perineum in pediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has profoundly changed and improved the investigation of abdominal and pelvic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in pediatrics. Using an imaging modality without ionizing radiation is of particular advantage because the pediatric IBD population is young and often requires repeat evaluation. MRI of the pelvis has become the imaging gold standard for detecting and monitoring perianal disease while bowel-directed imaging techniques (eg, enterography, enteroclysis and colonography) can accurately evaluate bowel inflammation in IBD. With recent technological innovatio

Quantitative ultrasound in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Ultrasound has been proposed as a low-cost, radiation-free method for osteoporosis assessment in postmenopausal women. Large prospective studies have shown that ultrasound parameters can be used for fracture risk estimate in this population, providing that adequate quality control is performed. The places of both ultrasound and the current gold standard method for bone assessment, dual energy x-ray absorptiometry, are still to be determined. Further studies are needed on the diagnosis of osteoporosis using ultrasound, because current diagnostic thresholds, designed by the World Health Organiza

Pilot studies and new agent programs of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group.

The Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) has established two mechanisms for the study of new agents, including group A and B drugs and innovations in radiation therapy, namely, "pilot studies" and "master protocols." The master protocols allow for rapid accumulation of cases of tumor types of low incidence and the speedy completion of a study of new agents in common tumors. A new agents and pilot studies committee has been organized with responsibility for educational sessions, the introduction of new agents into either pilot studies or master protocols, and the review and monitoring of t

Investigation of the photochemical properties and in vitro phototoxic potential of bumetanide.

The photophysical and photochemical properties of bumetanide, a sulfonamide diuretic drug, have been investigated and the photodegradation of the drug on exposure to UV-B and UV-A radiation monitored by fluorimetric and chromatographic (HPLC) methods. The main photoproducts were isolated by solid-phase extraction and liquid chromatographic procedures, and their structure elucidated by 1H-NMR and mass spectrometry. Bumetanide generates only extremely small quantities of singlet oxygen (1O2) upon irradiation in the presence of oxygen. The in vitro 3T3 N RU phototoxicity test yielded no evidence

[Fluorescence with Wood's light. Current applications in dermatologic diagnosis, therapy follow-up and prevention].

The invisible long-wave ultraviolet radiation (340-450 nm, max.365 nm) produced by a Wood lamp can help to diagnose dermatoses with a characteristic fluorescence (tinea capitis, erythrasma, tinea versicolor, Pseudomonas infections, porphyrians, and pigmentary alterations). It is also used in the detection of medications that are taken systemically (tetracycline) or that are applied to the skin. Recently, a fluorescence technique with Wood light has been used as a preventive measure to monitor and quantify skin protection at the workplace and to teach workers in high-risk occupations the proper

Postradiation renovascular hypertension.

Radiation injury to arteries can represent a significant complication of therapeutic irradiation, even when the dosage used has not been excessive as judged by approved protocols. Children in whom therapeutic abdominal irradiation has been used should be monitored indefinitely for the development of hypertension. The presence of hypertension in such children with normal blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine, and without proteinuria, should prompt investigation for a renovascular lesion. Standard bypass procedures are usually effective, although the long-term success may be compromised by co

Postoperative Human Papilloma Virus Circulating Tumor DNA Guided Adjuvant Therapy for Human Papilloma Virus-Related Oropharyngeal Carcinoma (PATH Study).

PURPOSE: Human papillomavirus (HPV) circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) is a biomarker which detects minimal residual disease for HPV-associated oropharyngeal carcinoma (OPC) (HPV+ OPC). We conducted the first prospective study using HPV ctDNA as an integral biomarker to select patients for postoperative radiation therapy omission. We tested the hypothesis that undetectable postoperative HPV ctDNA can be used to omit or delay adjuvant radiation until patients develop detectable HPV ctDNA using the NavDx (Naveris, Inc) tumor tissue-modified viral (TTMV) HPV DNA score. Eligible HPV+ OPC patients had a

An analysis of the radioactive contamination due to radon in a granite processing plant and its decontamination by ventilation.

This work focuses on studying concentration distribution of 222Rn radioisotope in a granite processing plant. Using Computational Fluid Dynamic Techniques (CFD), the exposure of the workers to radiation was assessed and, in order to minimise this exposure, different decontamination scenarios using ventilation were analysed. Natural ventilation showed not sufficient to maintain radon concentration below acceptable limits, so a forced ventilation was used instead. Position of the granite blocks also revealed as a determining factor in the radioactive level distribution. Thus, a correct layout of

Sensitive measurement of positron emitters eluted from HPLC.

For sensitive analysis of the radioactive-metabolite in human PET, a radio-HPLC system coupled to a newly designed positron detector was constructed. The detector had the advantages of low noise level (1.7 +/- 1.0 cpm) and high sensitivity (32 +/- 1%) due to coincidence counting and large BGO crystals. Furthermore, the detector was easy to move, since a pair of the BGO housings coupled to photomultipliers was effectively arranged in parallel and a HPLC cell with different volume could be inserted between the BGO housing. This radio-HPLC system was useful for analyzing samples with low radioact

Ultrasonography of the Lung.

BACKGROUND: High diagnostic accuracy, increasing clinical experience and technical improvements are good reasons to consider lung ultrasound (US) for the assessment of pleural and pulmonary diseases. In the emergency room and in intensive care, it is well acknowledged, but application in other settings is rare. The aim of this review is to update potential users in general radiology about the diagnostic scope of lung US and to encourage more frequent use of this generally underestimated lung imaging modality. METHOD: Literature review was done independently by the two authors in MEDLINE (via

Synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction validation of real-time in situ terahertz-Raman monitoring of resonant acoustic mixing cocrystallization.

While synchrotron-based X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) is often seen as the "gold standard" for real-time in situ monitoring of transformations of crystalline phases under mechanochemical conditions, an exciting opportunity to perform such studies using laboratory benchtop instrumentation is offered by terahertz-Raman (THz-Raman) spectroscopy, capable of detecting changes in lattice phonon bands. Here, we integrate synchrotron XRPD and THz-Raman into a tandem methodology that enabled the qualitative, as well as quantitative validation of the potential of THz-Raman spectroscopic monitoring of

The Impact of Adjuvant Radiotherapy Combined With Targeted or Immunotherapy on the Heart in Breast Cancer.

With the increasing adoption of combination therapies involving targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy in breast cancer treatment, the potential cardiotoxicity risks have emerged as a major clinical concern. This article reviews key clinical trial evidence from recent years, including studies published up to March 2025, focusing on the short-term and long-term cardiovascular impacts of combination therapies, aiming to provide clinically relevant guidance for decision-making. Current clinical studies indicate relatively low rates of acute cardiac adverse events during the treatment p

X-Ray-Responsive Engineered Bacteria for Synergistic Radioimmunotherapy and Photoacoustic Immunomonitoring of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer.

Engineered bacteria offer promising opportunities for cancer immunotherapy, yet precise in vivo activation and real-time tracking of immune responses remain formidable challenges. Here, we present an x-ray-sensitive engineered bacterium, composed of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and gold-silver nanorods (Ec-GS NRs), for synergistic radioimmunotherapy and photoacoustic (PA) immunomonitoring of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Upon x-ray irradiation, Ag+ release induces bacterial damage, stimulating the host immune system and triggering immunogenic tumor cell death. Moreover, radiation-induced
