Inflammatory Response Mechanisms of the Dentine-Pulp Complex and the Periapical Tissues.

The macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of the oral cavity is complex and unique in the human body. Soft-tissue structures are in close interaction with mineralized bone, but also dentine, cementum and enamel of our teeth. These are exposed to intense mechanical and chemical stress as well as to dense microbiologic colonization. Teeth are susceptible to damage, most commonly to caries, where microorganisms from the oral cavity degrade the mineralized tissues of enamel and dentine and invade the soft connective tissue at the core, the dental pulp. However, the pulp is well-equipped to sense and

Assessment of inferior alveolar and lingual nerve disturbances after dentoalveolar surgery, and of recovery of sensitivity.

In a follow-up of 1107 dentoalveolar operations in the postcanine region, 24 (2.2%) temporary sensitivity disturbances of the inferior alveolar nerve and 16 (1.4%) of the lingual nerve were found. Permanent disturbances were not present. Complete recovery had occurred by 6 months in all cases. The incidence of temporary sensitivity disturbances depended on the different surgical interventions performed. For evaluation and follow-up purposes, a computer-aided pain and thermal sensitivity (PATH) tester was used. By PATH testing, spontaneous recovery can already be ascertained at the third or fou

Evaluation of Bone Healing After Enucleation of Jaw Cysts Using Region of Interest (ROI)-Based Gray Value Analysis on Panoramic Radiographs: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to evaluate bone healing after enucleation of cystic jaw lesions using region of interest (ROI)-based gray value analysis on panoramic radiographs. Additionally, this study aims to quantitatively assess early postoperative changes in the lesion area and to determine whether grayscale values approach those of the contralateral healthy bone. Furthermore, it seeks to investigate the applicability of panoramic radiography as a reliable and accessible tool for objective radiographic follow-up in routine clinical practice. Therefore, grayscale analysis provides

Multidisciplinary approach for the treatment of a complicated crown-root fracture in a young patient: a case report.

Crown-root fractures in permanent teeth cause esthetic and functional problems. This paper reports the case of a complicated crown-root fracture in the maxillary right central incisor of a young patient who was treated with a multidisciplinary approach in two phases. A modified Widman flap, root canal therapy, glass fiber post cementation, and adhesive tooth fragment reattachment were performed shortly after an accident. Satisfactory esthetic and functional outcomes were obtained. However, the patient did not attend follow-up visits and returned after 7 years. During this second phase, the cli

Factors involved in the T helper type 1 and type 2 cell commitment and osteoclast regulation in inflammatory apical diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Periapical chronic lesion formation involves activation of the immune response and alveolar bone resorption around the tooth apex. However, the overall roles of T helper type 1 (Th1), Th2, and T-regulatory cell (Treg) responses and osteoclast regulatory factors in periapical cysts and granulomas have not been fully determined. This study aimed to investigate whether different forms of apical periodontitis, namely cysts and granulomas, show different balances of Th1, Th2 regulators, Treg markers, and factors involved in osteoclast chemotaxis and activation. METHODS: Gene expressi
