CT virtual pancreatoscopy: a new method for diagnosing intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the pancreas.

BACKGROUND: We sought to validate computed tomographic virtual pancreatoscopy (CT-VP) created by multidetector row CT (MD-CT) in the clinical diagnosis of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the pancreas. METHODS: Five cases of pancreatic IPMNs were included in this study. A nasopancreatic drainage tube was inserted and the pancreatic duct was filled with contrast medium, after which an upper abdominal scan was performed by MD-CT. CT-VP and three-dimensional (3D) CT pancreatographic images were created using a workstation and compared with images by conventional diagnostic techn

Contrast-enhanced spiral CT of the head and neck: comparison of contrast material injection rates.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Contrast-enhanced spiral CT studies of the head and neck are performed frequently using contrast material volumes of approximately 30 g iodine and a scan delay of 30-45 seconds. Because little is known about the effects of contrast material injection rates on tissue enhancement, this was prospectively investigated in our study. METHODS: Ninety-seven patients underwent spiral CT of the head and neck. Each patient was assigned randomly to one of four groups who received 100 mL of nonionic contrast material (300 mg I/mL) at different monophasic injection flow rates with 1

Tumor sensitive matching flow: A variational method to detecting and segmenting perihepatic and perisplenic ovarian cancer metastases on contrast-enhanced abdominal CT.

Accurate automated segmentation and detection of ovarian cancer metastases may improve the diagnosis and prognosis of women with ovarian cancer. In this paper, we focus on an important subset of ovarian cancer metastases that spread to the surface of the liver and spleen. Automated ovarian cancer metastasis detection and segmentation are very challenging problems to solve. These metastases have a wide variety of shapes and intensity values similar to that of the liver, spleen and adjacent soft tissues. To address these challenges, this paper presents a variational approach, called tumor sensit

Comparison of intraoperative 2D vs. 3D imaging in open reduction and fixation of distal radius fractures.

PURPOSE: In the volar plating of distal radius fractures, intraoperative three-dimensional (3D) imaging is designed to allow better judgment regarding screw and implant positioning compared with conventional intraoperative two-dimensional (2D) imaging. We evaluated the impact of these two imaging modalities on the rates of intraoperative revision and secondary surgery, as well as the need for implant removal during follow-up. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of consecutive patients who underwent volar plate osteosynthesis for isolated distal radius fractures between January 2008 and April 20

Multidetector-row computed tomography diagnosis of small bowel obstruction: can coronal reformations replace axial images?

Feasibility of diagnosing small bowel obstruction on multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) using coronal reformations alone is evaluated. Three radiologists with subspecialty training in abdominal imaging reviewed abdominopelvic CT of 67 patients in consensus. Thirty-four patients had surgically proven small bowel obstruction. The remaining 33 patients had CT for other reasons and had no intestinal obstruction. The images were displayed in either axial or coronal planes and were reviewed on separate days . Each CT was evaluated for the presence of small bowel obstruction and its etiolog

Landmarking of computed tomographic images to assist in segmentation of abdominal tumors caused by neuroblastoma.

Segmentation of the primary tumor mass in neuroblastoma could aid radiologists by facilitating reproducible and objective quantification of the tumor's tissue composition and size. However, due to the heterogeneous nature of the tissue components of the neuroblastic tumor, ranging from low-attenuation necrosis to high-attenuation calcification, some of which possess strong similarities with adjacent nontumoral tissues in computed tomographic (CT) images, segmentation of the tumor is a difficult problem. In this context, landmarking methods are proposed to assist in the segmentation of neurobla

Best-Quality Vessel Identification Using Vessel Quality Measure in Multiple-Phase Coronary CT Angiography.

The detection of stenotic plaques strongly depends on the quality of the coronary arterial tree imaged with coronary CT angiography (cCTA). However, it is time consuming for the radiologist to select the best-quality vessels from the multiple-phase cCTA for interpretation in clinical practice. We are developing an automated method for selection of the best-quality vessels from coronary arterial trees in multiple-phase cCTA to facilitate radiologist's reading or computerized analysis. Our automated method consists of vessel segmentation, vessel registration, corresponding vessel branch matching

Thoracic abnormality detection with data adaptive structure estimation.

Automatic detection of lung tumors and abnormal lymph nodes are useful in assisting lung cancer staging. This paper presents a novel detection method, by first identifying all abnormalities, then differentiating between lung tumors and abnormal lymph nodes based on their degree of overlap with the lung field and mediastinum. Regression-based appearance model and graph-based structure labeling are designed to estimate the actual lung field and mediastinum from the pathology-affected thoracic images adaptively. The proposed method is simple, effective and generalizable, and can be potentially ap
