Brief report of a clinical trial on the duration of middle ear effusion in young children using a standardized osteopathic manipulative medicine protocol.

CONTEXT: Osteopathic physicians have used osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) to treat patients with acute otitis media (AOM) and its sequelae (eg, middle ear effusion [MEE], conductive hearing loss) for more than a century. However, few clinical trials document the efficacy of OMM, perhaps because of various challenges related to OMM clinical trials. OBJECTIVES: To describe a research protocol studying the efficacy of OMM on MEE after an episode of AOM, comment on the feasibility of the protocol and statistical analysis, and report on lessons learned in the first 9 months of the study.

Neurocognitive impairments and brain abnormalities resulting from opioid-related overdoses: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Non-fatal opioid-related overdoses have increased significantly over the past two decades and there have been increasing reports of brain injuries and/or neurocognitive impairments following overdose events. Limited preclinical research suggests that opioid overdoses may cause brain injury; however, little is known about such injuries in humans. The purpose this systematic review is to summarize existing studies on neurocognitive impairments and/or brain abnormalities associated with an opioid-related overdose in humans. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, Ovid MEDLINE and PsyINFO we

Significant factors associated with problematic use of opioid pain relief medications among the household population, Canada, 2018.

BACKGROUND: Reliance on the use of opioids to manage pain has increased over time, as have opioid-related morbidity and deaths. In 2018, 12.7% of Canadians reported having used opioid pain relief medications (OPRMs) in the previous year. Among these people, 9.6% had engaged in problematic use that could cause harm to their health. Though socioeconomic characteristics associated with opioid-related harms have previously been reported, population-level evidence based on administrative health data lacks important behavioural and psychosocial information. This analysis extends previous research by

Innate Error Immunities of the Th17 Immune Pathway Associated With Chronic Mucocutaneous Candidiasis: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogenic yeast commensal in human mucosa. In individuals with compromised immune systems, it can present as chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC) or systemic infection. CMC often exists in the presence of other infectious phenotypes due to dysfunction of the Th17 immune response. OBJECTIVE: To examine innate error immunities (IEI) of the Th17 immune response associated with CMC. METHODS: MEDLINE PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched for keywords and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) related to the subject of interest. Nonapplicabl

Application Progress of Objective Audiological Detection Techniques in Forensic Clinical Medicine.

The qualitative, quantitative, and localization analysis of hearing loss is one of the important contents of forensic clinical research and identification. Pure-tone audiometry is the "gold standard" for hearing loss assessment, but it is affected by the subjective cooperation of the assessed person. Due to the complexity of the auditory pathway and the diversity of hearing loss, the assessment of hearing loss requires the combination of various subjective and objective audiometric techniques, along with comprehensive evaluation based on the case situation, clinical symptoms, and other examina

Gambling disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder: A frequent but understudied comorbidity.

Background and aims Epidemiological data have suggested that the prevalence of co-occurring personality disorders is particularly high in people with gambling disorder (GD). Among the personality disorders, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) appears to be the most common problem. The objective of this study was to investigate the clinical presentation of GD with and without co-occurring OCPD. Methods We studied 25 subjects with current GD and lifetime diagnosis of OCPD. They were matched for age and gender with 25 individuals with current GD but no lifetime diagnosis of any perso

Electroencephalographic modulations during an open- or closed-eyes motor task.

There is fundamental knowledge that during the resting state cerebral activity recorded by electroencephalography (EEG) is strongly modulated by the eyes-closed condition compared to the eyes-open condition, especially in the occipital lobe. However, little research has demonstrated the influence of the eyes-closed condition on the motor cortex, particularly during a self-paced movement. This prompted the question: How does the motor cortex activity change between the eyes-closed and eyes-open conditions? To answer this question, we recorded EEG signals from 15 voluntary healthy subjects who p

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder among pathological and at-risk gamblers seeking treatment: a hidden disorder.

BACKGROUND: The links between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and substance use disorders have been the subject of numerous papers. Few studies, however, have focused specifically on the relationship between ADHD and behavioural addictions. The aim of this study was to (i) examine the frequency of pathological and at-risk gamblers having a previous history of ADHD; (ii) give details of the characteristics of this association, and (iii) identify risk factors for a history of ADHD. METHODS: 84 pathological and at-risk gamblers were assessed about socio-demographic, gambling and

Meta-analysis of the relationship between HIV infection and risk for depressive disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Each of 10 published studies investigating the relationship between HIV infection and risk for depressive disorders concluded that HIV-positive individuals are at no greater risk for depression than comparable HIV-negative individuals. This study used meta-analytic techniques to further examine the relationship between depressive disorders and HIV infection. METHOD: Meta-analytic techniques were used to aggregate and reanalyze the data from 10 studies that compared HIV-positive and HIV-negative individuals for rates of major depressive disorder (N=2,596) or dysthymic disorder (N=1,

Blinding integrity in psychedelic research: Evidence from a comparative randomized controlled trial of psilocybin, MDMA, and methylphenidate in healthy volunteers.

Maintaining effective blinding is a major methodological challenge in psychedelic research. This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of blinding integrity in 120 healthy volunteers who received either psilocybin, MDMA, or methylphenidate (active placebo) in a double-blind, randomized controlled trial. Using a multi-level assessment incorporating forced-choice substance guesses, certainty ratings, decision factors, and subjective substance effects, the analyses characterize blinding integrity and its relation to the substance experience. Results indicate that overall blinding was insuffic

Inhibitory Effects of Individualized Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation on Motor Imagery and Interhemispheric Symmetry: Implications for Stroke Rehabilitation.

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) holds potential in stroke rehabilitation, but its effects when delivered at an individual's peak motor imagery (MI) frequency remain unclear. This study investigated the impact of tACS delivered at subject-specific peak MI frequencies on MI performance accuracy, quantified in terms of classification accuracy, and interhemispheric symmetry, measured via the brain symmetry index (BSI). Using a brain-computer-brain closed-loop system, each subject's peak MI performance frequency was first identified during the Pre-stimulation phase, after which

Regional variations and sex-related differences of stiffness in human tracheal ligaments.

PURPOSE: There have been numerous studies focused on the stiffness of tracheal cartilage. However, no research has been conducted specifically on the annular ligament, nor have any regional differences in the annular ligament been identified. The purpose of this study was to investigate the stiffness of the ligaments present between the thyroid, cricoid and tracheal cartilages. METHODS: The ligaments were identified in the cervical region of living subjects with ultrasonography. The stiffness of the ligaments was measured from the body surface using a digital palpation device (MyotonPRO). Sin

Characteristic alterations of gut microbiota in uncontrolled gout.

Microbiome research has been on the rise recently for a more in-depth understanding of gout. Meanwhile, there is a need to understand the gut microbiome related to uric acid-lowering drug resistance. In this study, 16S rRNA gene-based microbiota analysis was performed for a total of 65 stool samples from 17 healthy controls and 48 febuxostat-treated gout patients (including 28 controlled subjects with decreased uric acid levels and 20 uncontrolled subjects with non-reduced uric acid levels). Alpha diversity of bacterial community decreased in the healthy control, controlled, and uncontrolled g

Advancement in Stem Cell Therapy for Ischemic Myocardial Cell: A Systematic Review.

Background: Cardiac muscle possesses a limited capacity to regenerate its tissue on its own. It is less likely to reverse the altered cardiac functioning to its normal physiological state after a major myocardial infarction. Stem cell transplantation provided a unique therapeutic approach in managing such injuries. There has been a substantial debate about the complexity, scope and medical application of stem cell transplantation in past few years. Materials and Methods: An extensive review of medical literature was conducted to establish the consensus about the possible mechanism of cell rene

Azithromycin as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy: a systematic review.

The aim of this study was to investigate the current published work relating to the clinical benefits of the use of systemic azithromycin as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy. A published work search of PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials up to 27 April 2016 was undertaken. The large degree of heterogeneity in the types of studies, treatment protocols, test subjects, sample size and exclusion criteria indicated that the use of narrative synthesis of all relevant studies was a valid method of review. Of the 194 eligible studies, 15 were found to be of relevanc
