A systematic review of self-determination interventions for children and youth with disabilities.

PURPOSE: Developing self-determination skills is an important component of youth's maturation. However, many youths with disabilities lack opportunities to engage in activities that can promote these skills. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of self-determination interventions for children and youth with disabilities. METHODS: A systematic review was performed on seven international databases that identified 28 studies meeting our inclusion criteria. RESULTS: Among the 28 studies, 5184 youth with disabilities (aged 9-29, mean age 16.8 years) were represented across

Investigating the relationship between childhood sexual abuse, self-harm repetition and suicidal intent: mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Research into the association between childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and self-harm repetition is limited. AIMS: We aimed to examine the association between self-harm repetition, mental health conditions, suicidal intent and CSA experiences among people who frequently self-harm. METHOD: A mixed-methods study was conducted including consecutive patients aged ≥18 years, with five or more self-harm presentations, in three Irish hospitals. Information was extracted from psychiatric records and patients were invited to participate in a semi-structured interview. Data was collected and an

Natural vs. surgical postmenopause and psychological symptoms confound the effect of menopause on executive functioning domains of cognitive experience.

OBJECTIVE: The menopause transition is associated with difficulties in executive function. However, it is unclear whether these difficulties persist past perimenopause. This study investigated whether potential confounders, including natural vs. surgical postmenopause and menopause-related psychological symptoms, influence whether executive dysfunction persists into postmenopause. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional sample of women aged 35-65 years (N = 1971) in one of four groups, premenopause, perimenopause, natural postmenopause, and surgical postmenopause, were surveyed. Participants self-rep

Antenatal group-based psychoeducation to improve postpartum depression literacy in primary health care institutions in Ethiopia: a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression literacy assists mothers in recognizing and preventing postpartum depression (PPD). So, this study assessed the effectiveness of antenatal group psychoeducation in improving PPD literacy among pregnant women in Jimma, Ethiopia. METHODS: A cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted from 28 March to 1 December 2022 involving 32 non-adjusted health centers that were randomized into two groups (16 health centers for each arm). The study enrolled 550 participants who scored (0-9) on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. The intervention group received standar

Health, disability and quality of life among trans people in Sweden-a web-based survey.

BACKGROUND: Swedish research concerning the general health of trans people is scarce. Despite the diversity of the group, most Swedish research has focused on gender dysphoric people seeking medical help for their gender incongruence, or on outcomes after medical gender-confirming interventions. This paper examines self-rated health, self-reported disability and quality of life among a diverse group of trans people including trans feminine, trans masculine, and gender nonbinary people (identifying with a gender in between male of female, or identify with neither of these genders) as well as pe

Understanding the associations between eHealth activities and support for alcohol restrictions among drinkers-the roles of alcohol-related health risk awareness and self-efficacy.

OBJECTIVE: Excessive alcohol consumption is a significant health concern in the United States. Alcohol restriction policies can help control the harms caused by alcohol use. eHealth activities have been proposed to bolster public support for such policies. However, the psychological mechanisms underlying this relationship remain unexplored. This study aims to investigate the association between eHealth activities and support for alcohol restriction policies by influencing the specific awareness of certain diseases (cancer and heart disease), and how this relationship can be moderated by self-e

Interoceptive threat in adolescents with chronic pain: Evidence for fear responses during anticipation and provocation of internal bodily sensations.

As fear of interoceptive sensations may play a pivotal role in chronic pain persistence and its co-occurrence with emotional disorders, a thorough understanding of these fear-related processes is essential. We investigated whether anticipation and provocation of (non-painful) interoceptive sensations proximal to the main pain site elicit a multimodal fear response in adolescents with chronic pain compared to distal sensations or a control task. Startle response, skin conductance level (SCL), heart rate (HR), self-reported fear and avoidance were assessed. Adolescents (11-18 years) with chronic

How is Physical Activity Measured in Spinal Muscular Atrophy and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy?

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) provides many substantial benefits to help reduce risk for cardiometabolic disease, improve cognitive function, and improve quality of life. Individuals with neuromuscular disorders (NMDs), such as spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) are characterized by muscular weakness and fatigue, which limits the capacity to reach the recommended guidelines of PA. Measuring PA in these populations can provide insight to participation in daily activities, track disease progression, and monitor efficacy of drug treatments. OBJECTIVE: The ob

Using an mHealth App to Transition Care of Type 1 Diabetes from Parents to Teens: Protocol for a Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) afflicts approximately 154,000 people under the age of 20 in the United States. Most people with T1DM are diagnosed at a young age, and parents have to take on the responsibility of T1DM management. Eventually, the child must begin to transition to self-management. Adolescents often struggle to take on responsibility for all the necessary tasks to successfully self-manage their T1DM. In fact, approximately three-quarters of adolescents are not achieving American Diabetes Association-recommended glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) targets. This lack of adhere

Exploring adolescents' ability to appraise health information: validation of the self-report short-form Critical Health Literacy Questionnaire.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents' ability to evaluate health information is an increasingly important area in public health and health promotion; however, there is a scarcity of brief, psychometrically sound self-report tools focused on adolescents' information appraisal abilities. In this study, we aim to validate a unidimensional short form of the Critical Health Literacy for Adolescents Questionnaire (CHLA-QA) domain A and to examine its convergent and known-groups validity. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey among Norwegian students (N = 522; response rate 33%) aged 13-15 years old.

Estimating and learning personality traits of and from women with borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Accurately perceiving and learning about others’ personalities is crucial for successful social relationships. Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is marked by unstable interpersonal dynamics, an unstable and negative self-concept, and a tendency to evaluate others unfavorably. Individuals with BPD are also more likely to be viewed negatively by others and experience social stigmatization. This study investigated whether women with BPD exhibit negativity biases when evaluating their own and others’ personality traits, and how these biases influence learning about others. METHODS:

(Don't) panic in the scanner! How panic patients with agoraphobia experience a functional magnetic resonance imaging session.

Although functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has gained increasing importance in investigating neural substrates of anxiety disorders, less is known about the stress eliciting properties of the scanner environment itself. The aim of the study was to investigate feasibility, self-reported distress and anxiety management strategies during an fMRI experiment in a comprehensive sample of patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia (PD/AG). Within the national research network PANIC-NET, n=89 patients and n=90 controls participated in a multicenter fMRI study. Subjects completed a retrosp

What Self-Management Skills Do Turkish Caregivers Have in Caring for People with Dementia? Results of a Qualitative Survey.

Family caregivers can be overwhelmed by the care they provide within the family without external support. The development of self-management skills and the associated ability to actively and responsibly manage one's own health or illness situation therefore plays a vital role in the home care of people living with dementia. As part of an individualized intervention for family caregivers of people of Turkish origin with dementia, existing self-management skills were examined through qualitative interviews to gain insight into health literacy and empowerment in caregiving and in interviewees' ow

A randomized controlled trial of a self-guided mobile app targeting repetitive negative thought to prevent depression in university students: study protocol of the Nurture-U Reducing Worry prevention trial.

BACKGROUND: Tackling poor mental health in university students has been identified as a priority in higher education. However, there are few evidence-based prevention initiatives designed for students. Repetitive Negative Thought (RNT, e.g. worry, rumination) is elevated in university students and is a well-established vulnerability factor for anxiety and depression. Furthermore, there are now evidence-based cognitive-behavioural interventions to tackle RNT. A mobile self-help cognitive-behavioural app targeting RNT, adapted for students may therefore be an effective, scalable, and acceptable
