A population dynamic approach to the cost-effectiveness analysis of mass anthelmintic treatment: effects of treatment frequency on Ascaris infection.

This study examines the cost-effectiveness of different frequencies of mass chemotherapy in reducing helminth infection and morbidity at the community level. The cost-effectiveness framework utilities a dynamic model of helminth transmission which permits the effectiveness of treatment to be expressed as some long-term reduction in infection and disease. Cost analysis is incorporated into this framework using an itemized cost menu and cost data from an actual control programme. The cost-effectiveness of mass treatment is investigated using epidemiological measures considered appropriate to Asc

An epidemiological survey of dog bites presenting to the emergency department of a children's hospital.

German shepherds are the most popular registered breed of dog in South Australia, but are also the most hazardous to children, biting more often and more severely. A study of the victims of dog bites presenting to the Emergency Department of the Adelaide Children's Hospital over an 18 month period revealed that, although many breeds were involved, only German shepherds were implicated more frequently than their prevalence in the community. Attacks occurred most often in a domestic setting involving a friendly dog that was known to the victim. Boys were more often bitten than girls and children

The emergency department diagnosis of Trichomonas vaginitis.

Trichomonas vaginalis is a common cause of vaginitis in emergency department patient populations. While the diagnosis of this condition is usually on the basis of wet-mount microscope slide preparations, other diagnostic technology exists. We studied the accuracy of the traditional wet-mount technique as compared with detection using direct immunofluorescence and culture techniques in ED patients with the presenting complaint of vaginal discharge. Of 157 patients evaluated, the wet-mount technique detected 27 cases of Trichomonas, compared with 35 cases diagnosed by direct immunofluorescence a

"New" food-borne pathogens of public health significance.

Recent work by epidemiologists and microbiologists has uncovered several hitherto unrecognized food-borne bacterial pathogens of public health significance. One of these, Listeria monocytogenes, has attracted considerable attention because of two major cheese-related outbreaks of listeriosis that were characterized by cases of meningitis, abortion, and perinatal septicemia. Thus far, L. monocytogenes has been responsible for well over 300 reported cases of food-borne listeriosis, including about 100 deaths, and has cost the dairy industry alone more than 66 million dollars as a result of produ

Uncontrolled hemorrhagic shock outcome model in rats.

During uncontrolled hemorrhagic shock (UHS) in acute animals models, attempts to achieve normotension with i.v. fluid resuscitation (FR) caused further bleeding and higher acute mortality. In the absence of a published clinically realistic long-term animal outcome study of UHS, we developed such a model in rats. In the preliminary study, phase I of the model involved 60 min of simulated 'pre-hospital' UHS by tail amputation and different FR regimens. Phase II involved 120 min of simulated 'hospital' treatment with hemostasis and all-out FR, including blood infusion. Phase III involved observin

School-based and community-based actions for scaling-up diagnosis and treatment of schistosomiasis toward its elimination in an endemic area of Brazil.

This study evaluated a school-based and a community-based scheme for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of schistosomiasis mansoni among school-aged children in views of resolution CD49.R19 of the Pan American Health Organization toward the elimination of schistosomiasis as a public health problem in the Americas and subsequent commitments endorsed by the Brazilian government. The school-aged population from a representative municipality of the endemic area of Northeastern Brazil was randomly allocated to either school-based or community-based scheme. The two schemes were compared with regard

Subcutaneous Tranexamic Acid Achieves Comparable Serum Concentrations to Intramuscular Administration During Haemorrhagic Shock in a Swine Model.

BACKGROUND: Tranexamic acid is an antifibrinolytic agent reducing mortality when administered to trauma patients with haemorrhagic shock. This mortality reduction is time sensitive. Increased intramuscular dose administration has proven an effective alternative to intravenous administration in several studies and is used by some emergency medical services. However, subcutaneous administration has not been studied. Previous research indicates that subcutaneous tissue blood flow is more compromised during shock than muscle perfusion. Determining subcutaneous absorption is crucial to evaluate its

Enteric infections and management practices among communities in a rural setting of northwest Ethiopia.

Infections with enteric pathogens have a high mortality and morbidity burden, as well as significant social and economic costs. Poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) conditions are the leading risk factors for enteric infections, and prevention in low-income countries is still primarily focused on initiatives to improve access to improved WASH facilities. Rural communities in developing countries, on the other hand, have limited access to improved WASH services, which may result in a high burden of enteric infections. Limited information also exists about the prevalence of enteric infecti

Vasoactive Effects of Acute Ergot Exposure in Sheep.

Ergotism is a common and increasing problem in Saskatchewan's livestock. Chronic exposure to low concentrations of ergot alkaloids is known to cause severe arterial vasoconstriction and gangrene through the activation of adrenergic and serotonergic receptors on vascular smooth muscles. The acute vascular effects of a single oral dose with high-level exposure to ergot alkaloids remain unknown and are examined in this study. This study had two main objectives; the first was to evaluate the role of α1-adrenergic receptors in mediating the acute vasocontractile response after single-dose exposure

Spatial and simultaneous representative seroprevalence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in owners and their domiciled dogs in a major city of southern Brazil.

Toxoplasmosis, caused by Toxoplasma gondii, has traditionally been considered an important water and foodborne protozoonosis with important public health considerations. Although felids play a well-established role as definitive hosts, canine epidemiological involvement in the parasite's life cycle remains questionable and controversial. The increasing closeness of the human-dog bond, particularly seen in urban settings, has been recognized as a historically unprecedented worldwide movement. Sharing daily lives in the same households, dogs may be exposed to similar associated risks of T. gondi

Risk-based immunization policies and tuberculosis screening practices for animal care and research workers in the United States: survey results and recommendations.

A national survey was conducted to assess immunization practices and tuberculosis screening methods for animal care and research workers in biomedical settings throughout the United States. Veterinarians (n = 953) were surveyed via a web-based mechanism; completed surveys (n = 308) were analyzed. Results showed that occupational health and safety programs were well-developed, enrolling veterinary, husbandry, and research staff at rates exceeding 90% and involving multiple modalities of health assessments and risk communication for vaccine-preventable diseases. Most (72.7%) institutions did not

Incidence of and risk factors for cat bites: a first step in prevention and treatment of feline aggression.

Feline aggression towards people has a smaller incidence than canine aggression, but also represents an important public health problem. The aim of this work was to analyse feline aggression reported towards people, to estimate its incidence and to assess the risk factors involved. The information was obtained from the Public Health Centres in the Valencian Region (Spain). A total of 936 acts of feline aggression were analysed. Cats inflicted 8% of all animal bites reported. The annual average was 6.36 feline aggression incidents per 100,000 people. Most aggressive incidents occurred during th

Location and habitat specificity structure benthic microbial assemblages in a temperate seagrass ecosystem.

Seagrass meadows are globally distributed coastal ecosystems that provide habitats for diverse species and facilitate ecosystem services, such as carbon storage and nutrient cycling. However, anthropogenic activities and climate change are causing seagrass decline worldwide, broadly impacting ecosystem functioning. Although macrofaunal communities in seagrass habitats are relatively well studied, benthic microbial assemblages (including microeukaryote groups such as protists and microbial metazoa) remain underexplored. In this study, we used environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding to characteri

Plant-derived extracts or compounds for Helicobacter-associated gastritis: a systematic review of their anti-Helicobacter activity and anti-inflammatory effect in animal experiments.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter infection, which is the leading cause of gastritis and stomach cancer, has become common worldwide. Almost all Helicobacter-infected patients have chronic active gastritis, also known as Helicobacter-associated gastritis (HAG). However, the eradication rate of Helicobacter is decreasing due to the poor efficacy of current medications, which causes infection to recur, inflammation to persist, and stomach cancer to develop. Natural components have robust antibacterial activity and anti-inflammatory capacity, as confirmed by many studies of alternative natural medicines.
