Meglumine antimoniate (MA) is a pentavalent antimony drug used to treat leishmaniases. We investigated the neurobehavioral development, sexual maturation and fertility of the offspring of MA-treated rats. A novel testis-specific gene termed mtIQ1 (GenBank Accession No. DQ153246) was identified by digital differential display. Twenty-nine children (23 girls, 6 boys) with precocious puberty were treated with cyproterone acetate for various periods of time ranging from 6 months to 3 years 4 months. They received an oral dose ranging from 70-150 mg/m2 per day, or an intramuscular depot injection once a fortnight or once a month at a dose ranging from 107-230 mg/m2. Both forms of therapy were found to suppress the signs of sexual maturation, but the oral form proved to be superior. Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) mRNA expression has been found in the medial preoptic area using in situ hybridization, addressing the possibility of CFTR regulation of sexual maturation and reproductive behaviour. CFTR mRNA has also been found in the cortical deep pyramidal layer V implying possible involvement of CFTR in 'motor' function and output control over bodily movements and secretion. CFTR production in the brain regions observed in this study implicate involvement of CFTR in cerebral control over motor/visceral and endocrine systems.
