The risks for major psychiatric disorders in the siblings of probands with major depressive disorder.

Using a case-controlled study including siblings of major depression (MD) and control probands, born 1970-1990 and followed through 2018, we sought to clarify the degree to which the familial liability to MD is reflected in its clinical features, and the pattern of psychiatric disorders at elevated risk in the siblings of MD probands. The study population included full-siblings of 197,309 MD and matched 197,309 control probands. The proband-sibling tetrachoric correlation of for MD was +0.20. Both linear and quadratic effects of younger AAO and number of episodes significantly increased the ri…

Cannabis use and cognitive biases in people with first-episode psychosis and their siblings.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use and familial vulnerability to psychosis have been associated with social cognition deficits. This study examined the potential relationship between cannabis use and cognitive biases underlying social cognition and functioning in patients with first episode psychosis (FEP), their siblings, and controls. METHODS: We analyzed a sample of 543 participants with FEP, 203 siblings, and 1168 controls from the EU-GEI study using a correlational design. We used logistic regression analyses to examine the influence of clinical group, lifetime cannabis use frequency, and potency …

Sibling sexual abuse: A commentary based on seven studies, seven insights.

Sibling sexual abuse (SSA) is a complex and underexplored issue with profound impacts on individuals, families, and communities. Current research, although developing, is insufficient and fails to capture the many layers and core aspects of SSA. This commentary highlights insights from seven qualitative studies conducted by the author between 2013 and 2020, based on interviews and focus groups with siblings, parents, and professionals. The findings reveal the need for stronger research-practice relationships, an understanding of the subjective experiences of abuse from child and adult survivor…

Neighborhood mobility and racial disparities in preterm birth: A sibling study in California.

Recent work finds that upward neighborhood mobility-defined as reductions in neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage due to moving-may improve birth outcomes. Less work, however, explores whether changes in socioeconomic context differentially impact birth outcomes by maternal race and ethnicity. In the US, mothers of minoritized racial and ethnic identity often experience worse neighborhood conditions and pregnancy outcomes than White mothers. Using a sibling-linked dataset, we examined whether neighborhood mobility corresponds with changes in preterm birth risk among Asian (N = 130,079), Bla

Retinal abnormalities and their relationship with social cognition in patients with schizophrenia and their healthy siblings.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate retinal abnormalities and their relationship with social cognitive function, and to assess whether retinal changes could be observed in the healthy siblings of patients with schizophrenia in a similar manner, suggesting their potential as an endophenotype. METHOD: The study included 28 patients with schizophrenia, 28 of their siblings, and 28 healthy control subjects. Social cognition tests were administered, and measurements of the retinal nerve fiber layers (RNFL), ganglion cell layer plus inner plexiform layer (GCL+IPL), and cup volumes were obtai…

Two siblings with a rare type of maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY).

Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is a type of diabetes that does not entirely fit the usually encountered type 1 or type 2 diabet … ighlight that paediatric diabetes cases are not always type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus since two siblings incidentally presented with hyperglycaemia and a confirmed diagnosis of MODY type 10 was ultimately made. Moreover, their mother who was previously labelled as a case of type 1 diabetes mellitus was diagnosed later as MODY after genetic testing.

Interviews with children and adolescents with epilepsy or asthma about the situation of their healthy siblings.

AIM: Chronic conditions can influence the situation of healthy siblings of affected children. We investigated the opinion of the affected child about the situation of their healthy sibling and the sibling relationship. METHODS: We performed a semi-structured interview with epilepsy or asthma patients aged 6-18 years and asked them to draw a picture: "Epilepsy/Asthma, my siblings and me." RESULTS: Of the 58 children with epilepsy, 67%, and of the 40 children with asthma, 60% thought that their siblings were worried about the condition. Among other aspects, they addressed helplessness during a…

Physical and Emotional Sibling Violence in Childhood and Attachment in Close Relationships in Adulthood.

Despite the consequences of physical and emotional sibling violence, which can last into adulthood, research examining this form of family violence is minimal compared to child abuse, interpartner violence, and elder abuse. One area that has received scarce attention is the connection between physical and emotional sibling violence and attachment in close relationships in adulthood. This research study examines the association between physical and emotional sibling violence and adulthood attachment in a sample of 2,458 individuals who completed a survey on the sub-Reddit platform "/r/SampleSiz

Comparison of fresh and frozen ejaculated spermatozoa in sibling oocyte recipient cycles.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Do IVF and intracytoplasmic sperm injection cycles using fresh and frozen ejaculated spermatozoa result in similar pregnancy outcomes in couples with non-male factor infertility? DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study; patients undergoing donor egg recipient cycles, in which oocytes from a single ovarian stimulation were split between two recipients, were reviewed. Two recipients of oocytes from a single donor were paired and categorized based on the type of ejaculated spermatozoa (fresh/frozen). Outcomes included delivery rate, implantation, pregnancy, pregnancy loss and ferti

Phenomic profiling of a novel sibling species within the Scedosporium complex in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Scedosporium species are a group of pathogenic fungi, which can be found worldwide around high human-impacted areas. Infections of Scedosporium have been reported in several immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients with a high mortality rate. Recently, we have isolated and identified several Scedosporium strains during an environmental survey in Thailand. RESULTS: We describe the isolate, TMMI-012, possibly a new species isolated from soils in the Chatuchak public park, Bangkok, Thailand. TMMI-012 is phylogenetically related to the Scedosporium genus and is a sibling to S. b

Ataxia with vitamin E deficiency in the Philippines : A case report of two siblings.

Here we report two siblings with ataxia and peripheral neuropathy. One patient showed head tremors. Genetic analysis revealed a mutation in the hepatic α-tocopherol transfer protein (α-TTP) gene (TTPA) on chromosome 8q13. They were diagnosed with ataxia with vitamin E deficiency which is firstly reported in the Philippines. As the symptoms of ataxia with vitamin E deficiency can be alleviated with lifelong vitamin E administration, differential diagnosis from similar syndromes is important. In addition, ataxia with vitamin E deficiency causes movement disorders. Therefore, a common hereditary …

Variable phenotypes of gyrate atrophy in siblings with a nonsense mutation in OAT gene.

Background: Gyrate Atrophy (GA) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by progressive chorioretinal degeneration. It is caused due to mutations in OAT gene that encodes a defective ornithine-δ-aminotransferase enzyme. We aim to identify the molecular cause of the disease and correlate it with the phenotype.Materials and Methods: Clinical, biochemical and genetic analyses were performed in siblings with GA.Case Description: A 10-year-old girl presented with impaired vision was clinically diagnosed to have peripheral chorioretinal degeneration in both eyes due to GA with vitreous h…

"And I Let It All Out": Survivors' Sibling Sexual Abuse Disclosures.

There is consensus in child sexual abuse (CSA) literature with respect to the central role of the disclosure process. However, CSA disclosur … and discuss it with reference to the perceived role of disclosure recipients-including perpetrating siblings, parents, and professionals. In-depth interviews with 25 adults were conducted and analyzed thematically. The results highlighted the significance of disclosure for survivors, as well as the central roles played by significant others in the process, …

SLC26A3 mutation in Turkish neonate and her sibling with congenital chloride diarrhea.

Congenital chloride diarrhea is a rare cause of severe infantile diarrhea with excessive chloride excretion. Mutations in the SLC26A3 gene cause congenital chloride diarrhea. It generally becomes apparent in the neonatal period and is characterized by electrolyte imbalances, metabolic alkalosis, and failure to thrive. The diagnosis of congenital chloride diarrhea is based on detecting excessive chloride in the stool (90 mmol/L). We report a Turkish neonate with congenital chloride diarrhea whose sibling had the same disease. The newborn was born by cesarean delivery. Diarrhea, vomiting, and we

Neural and neurocognitive markers of vulnerability to gambling disorder: a study of unaffected siblings.

Psychological and neurobiological markers in individuals with gambling disorder (GD) could reflect transdiagnostic vulnerability to addiction or neuroadaptive consequences of long-term gambling. Using an endophenotypic approach to identify vulnerability markers, we tested the biological relatives of cases with GD. Male participants seeking treatment for GD (n = 20) were compared with a male control group (n = 18). Biological siblings of cases with GD (n = 17, unrelated to the current GD group) were compared with a separate control group (n = 19) that overlapped partially with the GD control gr…

The Difference in Sibling Birthweight and Neonatal Death: A Population-Based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: There has been a call for customized rather than population-based birthweight standards that would classify smallness based on an infant's own growth potential. Thus, this study aimed to examine the association between the difference in sibling birthweight and the likelihood of neonatal death among second births in a U.S. STUDY DESIGN: This was a population-based cohort study including 179,300 women who delivered their first two nonanomalous singleton live births in Missouri (1989-2005). We performed binary logistic regression to evaluate the association between being relatively s

[The place of neuropathy in the early diagnosis of Cockayne syndrome: Report on two siblings].

Two siblings affected with Cockayne syndrome (CS) are described: this diagnosis was suggested by the finding of a demyelinating neuropathy on electromyography in both children and consistent clinical features. CS is a rare genetic disorder with severe prognosis and a highly varied phenotype, making early diagnosis difficult. Taking into account these two cases and the literature, the current diagnosis criteria are insufficiently specific and appear late: the diagnosis may be delayed because multi-organ involvement and sensorial impairment suggests more frequent neurometabolic disorders. Neuror…
