PURPOSE: To estimate the prevalence of sickle cell disorders and beta thalassemia, with their regional distribution, in the adult population … ia was involved in data collection.
RESULTS: Of a total of 488,315 individuals screened, 4.20% had sickle cell trait, 0.26% had sickle cell disease, 3.22% had thalassemia trait, and 0.07% had thalassemia disease. Both the diseases were focused mainly in the eastern, western, and southwestern parts of the country. Among the 207,333 couples who were issued certifica …

A case-control study was carried out on 558 patients with malaria attending a hospital in Yekepa, northern Liberia; 94 patients (16.8%) were aged at least ten years, probably because of a low level of protective immunity in town dwellers due to malaria control. The proportion of sickle cell traits (1.8%) among the patient group was lower than in the population (7.2%) served by the hospital (chi 2, 21.455, 1 df, P less than 0.001). A stratified analysis showed the relative risk for Plasmodium falciparum malaria in sickle cell trait over normal homozygotes, as 0.29 (upper 95%) confidence interva…

The authors report their experience with the management of patients with sickle cell trait undergoing open heart surgery. They focus their attention mainly on those factors potentially able to precipitate episodes of sickling, i.e. hypoxia, hypothermia, vascular stasis and acidosis.

Analytical procedures have been developed for the detection and diagnosis of sickle cell disease in newborn babies by analyzing the hemoglob … notypic methods and which include samples from 20 sickle cell disease, 1 beta-thalassemia major, 57 sickle cell trait, and 39 normal babies. In all cases, the mass spectrometric results agreed with the results obtained using conventional analytical practice with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and isoelectric focusing (IEF). We show that mass spectrom …

The process by which malaria parasites are killed in sickled erythrocytes was studied by electron microscopy. In vitro cultures of Plasmodium falciparum in sickle cell hemoglobin (HbS) homozygous (SS) and heterozygous (SA) red cells were deoxygenated for up to 6 h and fixed under anaerobic conditions. Parasites in SS cells appeared to be disrupted by intrusions of needle-like deoxyHbS aggregates; disintegration of cytoplasm and membranes followed. In SA red cells, the parasites were generally not disrupted. Instead, extensive vacuolization occurred, a sign of metabolic inhibition. The resistan

Cell-free (cf) DNA in maternal circulation is increasingly investigated in pregnancy. This study aimed to determine whether sickle-cell trait women had quantitative differences of cf-DNA to controls and if there was an ethnic difference between the cf-DNA levels of Northern European and African/African-Caribbean populations. Non-invasive prenatal diagnosis, through quantification of fetal and total cf-DNA, was tested in 33 pregnant women at risk of carrying a fetus affected with sickle-cell disease and 124 control pregnancies. A significant variation in cf-DNA was found between ethnic groups,

Renal medullary carcinoma (RMC) is a rare, yet aggressive malignancy of the kidney that is found predominantly in young patients with African descent and sickle cell hemoglobinopathies and most specifically sickle cell trait. Due to its aggressive nature, most cases have metastasis or local invasion at the time of diagnosis. Prognosis is extremely poor with survival less than 1 year after diagnosis. Here we present a case of metastatic RMC in a 29-year-old African female. Despite chemotherapy with cisplatin, gemcitabine, and paclitaxel, and initial shrinkage of the tumor, the patient died 5 mo…

Although centipede bits can cause severe symptoms, they are seldom reported since outcome is generally favorable. The purpose of this report is to describe a case of centipede envenomation causing severe and prolonged symptoms in a woman with sickle cell trait.

The automatic oxygenation technique of Imai et al (Biochimica Biophysica Acta, 200:189--196, 1970) was slightly modified and applied to the study of oxygen equilibrium curves of dilute, red-cell suspensions from normal subjects and individuals with hemoglobinopathies, enzymopathies, and other hematologic disorders. The p50 values of non-smoking, normal adults were 25.9 +/- 0.6 mm Hg at pH 7.4 and 37 degrees C, and corresponded to the values for whole blood reported in the literature. The oxygen equilibrium curves of suspensions from subjects with enzymopathies revealed shifts in position which

Renal medullary carcinoma (RMC) is a rare form of renal cell carcinoma that has a poor prognosis. It is known to be associated with sickle cell trait or disease, although the exact underlying mechanisms are still unclear. The diagnosis is made through immunochemical staining for SMARCB1 (INI1). In this report, we present a case of a 31-year-old male patient with sickle cell trait who was diagnosed with stage III right RMC. Despite the poor prognosis, the patient survived for a remarkable duration of 37 months. Radiological assessment and follow-up were primarily performed using 18F-FDG PET/MRI…

BACKGROUND: Hereditary hemoglobin (Hb) disorders are the most commonly encountered single gene disorders in India. Proper timely identification of these disorders is of paramount importance to prevent thalassemia major and clinically severe hemoglobinopathy as well as for epidemiologic purposes.
AIMS: Our aim was to determine the prevalence of thalassemia and hemoglobinopathy in patients of a tertiary care hospital of West Bengal, India.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study was conducted on 119,336 cases over a period of 10 years. After taking clinical history and familial history,

OBJECTIVE: To consider the organisation cost and effectiveness, of universal, community-based antenatal screening for the haemoglobinopathies, and to estimate the cost-effectiveness of programmes at different levels of prevalence and mix of haemoglobinopathy traits.
DESIGN: Retrospective review of laboratory and Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Centre worksheets with costing of capital equipment, consumables, salaries and overheads, and estimation of costs in a range of circumstances.
SETTING: A haematology department, including a Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Centre, providing antenatal and neon

Sickle cell hemoglobinopathy is not merely a genetic disorder but a deeply embedded socio-cultural phenomenon in the remote regions of Odisha. Drawing on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Koraput and surrounding districts, this study explores the lived experiences of individuals with sickle cell trait (SCT) and sickle cell disease (SCD), focusing on social discrimination, medical uncertainty, and healthcare accessibility. The findings reveal reluctance toward screening, particularly among unmarried women, due to fears of marital exclusion and family stigma. Misconceptions about SCT, includin…
