INTRODUCTION: Optimized staging of colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is essential for treatment planning and for estimating the prognosis of the disease. In addition to tumour size and the depth of bowel wall infiltration, the lymph node status is very important for the determination of the disease stage. Association of aggressive jejunal carcinoid tumors and other primary gastrointestinal neoplasms are rarely observed. We describe the case of a synchronous jejunal carcinoid tumor and two colorectal polyps in a 78-year old woman. Surgical intervention was performed for the colorectal tumors and the carcinoid was incidentally found. It was well differentiated but was accompanied by lymph node metastasis and peritoneal carcinomatosis. In this case, the prognosis was not depending by the colorectal tumors but the aggressive feature of jejunal carcinoid lead to patient's death.

INTRODUCTION: We have hypothesized that splenic flexure mobilization might be selectively undertaken in laparoscopic surgery (LAP) for rectal or sigmoid colon cancer.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Oncologic clearance and postoperative morbidity were compared between 119 LAP patients and 145 open surgery (OS), all of whom were treated without splenic flexure mobilization.

A 34-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with ileus. She had undergone surgical resection following chemotherapy for yolk sac tumor at the age of 12 years, and had received additional surgery and radiation therapy for a local recurrence at age 13. Following evaluation, a sigmoid colon tumor was detected and was surgically resected. Histology proved well differentiated adenocarcinoma with chronic irradiation colitis, suggesting that irradiation may have induced the colon cancer.

The case of a 59 year-old man with sigmoid colon cancer and synchronous liver metastases is described in this report. Sigmoid colectomy and partial hepatectomy were performed, and hepatic arterial cannulation was done for prevention of hepatic recurrence. The clinical case of a 73-years old male who was admitted for diarrhea and loss of weight is presented. Barium enema and colonoscopy demonstrated small size polyps in the sigmoid colon, one of which had a histologic diagnosis of adenocarcinoma. Abdominal examination detected a mass in the mesohypogastrium which did not appear to be related to the previous findings. CAT and intestinal transit confirmed a second tumor in the small bowel with the histologic diagnosis of a resected specimen being melanoma.

A review was conducted of 27 patients with colorectal carcinoma treated palliatively with endoscopic neodymium:yttrium-aluminium-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser. There were 25 rectal carcinomas and 2 primary invasive sigmoid colon carcinomas. Of the 25 rectal carcinomas, there was 1 carcinoma in situ, 16 primary cancers, and 8 recurrent rectal carcinomas.
