"I just don't know what will be better other than an apartment which I can't afford": Experiences of housing quality following homelessness in Ontario, Canada.

Having access to good quality housing is a key determinant of well-being. Little is known about experiences of housing quality following homelessness from the perspectives of persons with lived experience. To build on existing literature, we conducted a secondary analysis of qualitative interviews with 19 individuals who had experiences of transitioning to housing following homelessness. Interview transcripts were drawn from a community-based participatory research study exploring the conditions needed for thriving following homelessness in Ontario, Canada. We analyzed these transcripts using

Undergraduate nursing assistant employment in aged care has benefits for new graduates.

AIMS: To determine how undergraduate assistant in nursing employment in aged care helps to prepare new graduates for clinical work as a Registered Nurse. BACKGROUND: The amount and quality of clinical experience afforded by university programs has been the subject of constant debate in the nursing profession. New graduate nurses are often deemed inadequately prepared for clinical practice and so many nursing students seek employment as assistants in nursing whilst studying to increase their clinical experience. DESIGN: This paper presents the first phase of a larger mixed-methods study to ex

Zebrafish frk Gene Knockout Shows Social Impairments Relevant to Autism and Delays Brain Development by Increasing Cell Proliferation.

Fyn-related kinase (FRK), which belongs to the Src family of non-receptor protein tyrosine kinases, functions during the cell cycle. Here, we report an autistic patient with an intragenic mutation of FRK and two other autism-related genes. Circumventing the barrier of murine model studies, we generated the CRISPR/Cas9-engineered frk -/- zebrafish. We found that frk-knockout led to early developmental abnormalities. Frk -/- fish exhibited autism-like behavior, including impaired social communication, repetitive stereotypic behavior, altered anxiety level, and cognitive dysfunction in both larva

Identification of a β-Arrestin 2 Mutation Related to Autism by Whole-Exome Sequencing.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurological disease characterized by impaired social communication and interaction skills, rigid behavior, decreased interest, and repetitive activities. The disease has a high degree of genetic heterogeneity, and the genetic cause of ASD in many autistic individuals is currently unclear. In this study, we report a patient with ASD whose clinical features included social interaction disorder, communication disorder, and repetitive behavior. We examined the patient's genetic variation using whole-exome sequencing technology and found new de novo muta

Neurovisceral Model of Social Anxiety Disorder: An Integrative Review.

Social anxiety involves persistent fear of negative evaluation that causes significant distress or avoidance in social situations and, when lasting at least six months with meaningful impairment across life domains, meets diagnostic criteria for social anxiety disorder (SAD). The origins and maintenance of SAD have been described by disparate models as dysregulation of central and peripheral networks involved in emotion regulation and threat appraisal. However, studies integrating central and peripheral levels of analysis remain scarce and lack integration, leaving our understanding of the neu

Does education shield against vaccine hesitancy? Evidence from the East-West divide.

Education is among the strongest correlates of health behavior, yet its relationship with vaccine acceptance varies sharply across European contexts. Using the SHARE COVID-19 Survey 2 (summer 2021) linked to rich pre-pandemic data from SHARE and SHARELIFE - a longitudinal survey of adults aged 50 and above across 27 European countries - we document a striking East-West asymmetry: schooling is strongly and positively associated with COVID-19 vaccine take-up in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) but only weakly related in Western and Central Europe (WCE). We argue that this contrast is consistent

Challenges to Aging in the Right Place for Older Adults Experiencing Homelessness.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Aging in the Right Place (AIRP), the process of occupying housing that meets one's unique preferences and needs, is a critical component of aging well. Homelessness in later life compromises AIRP. This qualitative study examined the factors that informed housing options before, during, and after episodes of homelessness in later life and the indicators of AIRP that those options embodied. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This cross-sectional qualitative study consisted of interviews with 22 older adults who experienced homelessness after age 55 and 9 housing service pro

Lived experiences, perspectives, and challenges related to medication management among older people living with HIV (PLWH) in Malaysia.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a significant global public health concern. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has transformed HIV into a chronic and manageable disease, leading to an increased lifespan for people living with HIV (PLWH). However, the growing population of older PLWH presents unique challenges owing to the complexities of managing multiple medications for HIV and age-related conditions. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences, perspectives, and challenges related to medication management among older PLWH in Malaysia. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 o

Examination of public perceptions of microbes and microbiomes in the United States reveals insights for science communication.

Within a changing research and media landscape, misconceptions and misinformation about microorganisms and microbiomes can arise, necessitating improvements in science communication practices through insights in public perceptions of the microbial world. Yet, little is known about public perceptions of microorganisms and microbiomes, making it difficult to develop tailored messaging. Here we perform an inductive thematic analysis with interviews and surveys from thirty adults across the United States to identify key factors to enhance microbial science communication efforts. Together, our resu

Beyond emotions: A meta-analysis of neural response within face processing system in social anxiety.

Patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) experience anxiety and avoidance in face-to-face interactions. We performed a meta-analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies in SAD to provide a comprehensive understanding of the neural underpinnings of face perception in this disorder. To this purpose, we adopted an innovative approach, asking authors for unpublished data. This is a common procedure for behavioral meta-analyses, which, however has never been used in neuroimaging studies. We searched Pubmed with the key words "Social Anxiety AND faces" and "Social Phobia AND f

Triad of Trust: Vaccine Decision-Making by Pregnant People During the COVID-19 Pandemic in British Columbia and Ontario.

OBJECTIVES: While challenges surrounding vaccine acceptance in pregnancy have long been prevalent in Canada, the COVID-19 pandemic introduced a new context for perinatal vaccine decision-making. Pregnant people had to weigh concerns about SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy and the introduction of the new messenger RNA vaccines, with less access to in-person perinatal care and social support than usual. This qualitative analysis sought to understand how trust influenced the decision-making of pregnant people during the early COVID-19 pandemic regarding both routine and SARS-CoV-2 vaccination

Factors influencing breast milk donation to a human milk bank in Iran: implications for policymakers and planners.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) actively promotes breastfeeding as the optimal source of nourishment for infants and young children. However, not all newborns have access to breast milk, leading to deprivation of its nutritional benefits or incurring financial burdens from alternative feeding options. Establishing Human Milk Banks (HMBs) can help ensure equitable access to donated human milk. However, several factors may hinder breast milk donation. This study aims to identify the factors influencing milk donation to HMBs in Iran. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study inv

Relationships Between CSA Characteristics, Waiting Time, and Psychotherapy Treatment Response.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) can cause negative outcomes on cognitive, emotional, physical, and social development of the victims. A significant amount of symptoms related to CSA can be minimized or even treated with professional interventions. Thereby, it is important to examine factors related to treatment response. This article aimed to identify the relationships between CSA characteristics (abuse form, age, relationship with the offender, context, and frequency), waiting time for psychotherapy, and treatment response. Zero-order correlation analysis and network analysis were performed. The ana

Microstructural white matter alterations associated with social anxiety disorders: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by impaired social functioning that negatively impacts individuals' quality of life. Previous neuroimaging studies have revealed morphological and functional changes in various brain regions associated with SAD. Recent advances in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) have enabled the investigation of microstructural white matter (WM) alterations in SAD. This study aims to provide an overview of DTI/DWI studies exploring WM microstructure changes in SAD. METHODS: A systematic searc
