Association between maternal shift work and infant neurodevelopmental outcomes: results from the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study with propensity-score-matching analysis.

BACKGROUND: Maternal shift work is associated with preterm delivery, small-for-gestational-age new-borns, childhood obesity and future behavioural problems. However, the adverse effects on and interactions of maternal shift work with infant neurodevelopment remain uncertain. Therefore, we examined the associations between maternal-shift-work status and infant neurodevelopmental parameters. METHODS: The Taiwan Birth Cohort Study is a nationwide birth cohort study following representatively sampled mother-infant pairs in 2005. The participants' development and exposure conditions were assessed

Chemosensation drives divergent social behavior in Drosophila.

Social interactions play a key role in animal survival and reproduction, shaping mating success, cooperation, competition, and the transmission of information and disease. Across species, the social environment not only influences behavior but also feeds back on physiology, stress responses, and evolutionary trajectories. Despite this central importance, the molecular signals that control how animals sense and respond to one another remain incompletely understood. Drosophila melanogaster provides a powerful model to probe these mechanisms, as it combines a rich repertoire of social behaviors w

"It's the worst bloody feeling in the world": Experiences of loneliness and social isolation among older people living in care homes.

Loneliness and social isolation in later life result in social exclusion, reduced well-being, and significant health problems. Yet, we have a limited understanding of the meanings that older people ascribe to loneliness and social isolation, and how they live through and cope with these issues. The scarce research on the topic largely reflects the experiences of older people living in the community. Less is known about the lived experiences of those in institutionalized settings, despite this group's vulnerability to loneliness and social isolation. To address this gap, we conducted a six-mont

Social impressions while drinking account for the relationship between alcohol-related problems and social anxiety.

Individuals with elevated social anxiety appear particularly vulnerable to experiencing alcohol-related problems; yet we know little about factors that may account for this relationship. One possibility is that socially anxious individuals hold beliefs about the impressions they make on others while drinking and these beliefs play an important role in their drinking behaviors. The present study used exploratory factor analysis among participants with clinically elevated social anxiety (n=166) to develop a measure, the Social Impressions while Drinking Scale (SIDS), to assess beliefs regarding

The relationship between social networks and pathways to kidney transplant parity: evidence from black Americans in Chicago.

Research has shown that black dialysis patients in the United States are significantly less likely than their white peers to be evaluated and listed for a kidney transplant. Extrapolating from social-network theory, I hypothesize that a lack of access to social contacts with information about kidney transplantation may hinder information transaction regarding the benefits of, and pathway to, transplantation. In 2007-2008, the following research questions were addressed in an investigation in Chicago, USA: (1) What is the role of social networks in providing information about kidney transplanta

[Psychosocial problems in the elderly in Rotterdam and point of departure for prevention].

The aim of this study is to examine the prevalence of psycho-social problems among the elderly in order to plan prevention-programs. A questionnaire was sent in 1990 to a sample of 1989 inhabitants of the city of Rotterdam aged 65-79 years living on their own, drawn at random from the municipal registrar's office (response 58%). The results show that one third of the respondents experiences psycho-social problems. Groups at risk are: women, men who live alone, those with a low socio-economic status, people who live on their own but receive limited support from institutions. These socio-demogra

High COPD prevalence among socially marginalized hospitalized patients. A pragmatic multicenter prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco exposure is the main risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but other risk factors, including low socio-economic status (SES), may also contribute. Danish hospitals have introduced social nurses who support patients with complex health and social conditions. These nurses represent a unique point of contact for identifying hospitalized marginalized individuals who may not have undergone prior diagnostic evaluation for COPD. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of COPD among hospitalized marginalized individuals in contact with social nurses in Den

The association of depression, anxiety, and stress with caring for a child with Congenital Zika Syndrome in Brazil; Results of a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Zika virus (ZIKV) infection in pregnancy can cause microcephaly and a wide spectrum of severe adverse outcomes, collectively called "Congenital Zika Syndrome" (CZS). Parenting a child with disabilities can have adverse mental health impacts, but these associations have not been fully explored in the context of CZS in Brazil. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A cross-sectional study was undertaken in Recife and Rio de Janeiro, including 163 caregivers of a child with CZS (cases) and 324 caregivers with an unaffected child (comparison subjects), identified from existing studies. Pain tolerance predicts human social network size.

Personal social network size exhibits considerable variation in the human population and is associated with both physical and mental health status. Much of this inter-individual variation in human sociality remains unexplained from a biological perspective. According to the brain opioid theory of social attachment, binding of the neuropeptide β-endorphin to μ-opioid receptors in the central nervous system (CNS) is a key neurochemical mechanism involved in social bonding, particularly amongst primates. We hypothesise that a positive association exists between activity of the μ-opioid system and

The Impact of COVID-19 on Racialised Minority Populations: A Systematic Review of Experiences and Perspectives.

Racialised minority populations were disproportionately affected by COVID-19 and saw the highest rate of COVID-19 infections and mortality. Low socioeconomic status, working as frontline workers, temporary employment, precarious immigration status and pre-existing medical conditions were factors that contributed to disadvantaged experiences. This systematic review looked at the impact of COVID-19 on racialised minority populations globally, recognising their experiences, perspectives and the effects on their physical and mental health. Eight electronic databases were searched (MEDLINE, PsycINF

The Impact of Cleft Lip/Palate and Surgical Intervention on Adolescent Life Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip/palate (CLP) is a congenital orofacial anomaly appearing in approximately one in 700 births worldwide. While in high-income countries CLP is normally addressed surgically during infancy, in developing countries CLP is often left unoperated, potentially impacting multiple dimensions of life quality. Previous research has frequently compared CLP outcomes to those of the general population. But because local environmental and genetic factors contribute to the risk of CLP and also may influence life outcomes, such studies may downwardly bias estimates of both CLP status and c

Who is Supporting Homeless Youth? Predictors of Support in Personal Networks.

Homeless youth lack the traditional support networks of their housed peers, which increases their risk for poor health outcomes. Using a multilevel dyadic analytic approach, this study identified characteristics of social contacts, relationships, and social networks associated with the provision of tangible and emotional support to homeless youth (N = 419, M age = 20.09, SD = 2.80). Support providers were likely to be family members, sex-partners, or non-street based contacts. The provision of support was also associated with contacts' employment and homelessness status, frequency of contact,

Examining transitions in loneliness for people without and with moderate and severe disabilities.

PURPOSE: To investigate how disability affects the levels of loneliness reported by people living in Germany. In particular, we are interested in analysing the transitions into and out of loneliness but incorporating a dynamic approach of disability (i.e., disability trajectories). METHOD: Drawing data from the German Socio-Economic Panel for the years 2013 and 2017 and using a three-item version of the UCLA Loneliness Scale, we construct a balance panel of individuals and estimate linear regression models on loneliness, and probit models to predict the likelihood to become lonely or exit fro

Assessing individual and neighborhood social factors in child oral health-related quality of life: a multilevel analysis.

PURPOSE: It has been suggested that subjective measures of oral health are influenced by both individual and contextual characteristics. This study assessed the relationship between neighborhood and individual social networks and child oral health-related quality of life (COHRQoL). METHODS: This study followed a cross-sectional design using a multistage sample of 478 children aged 1-5 years old. Caregivers completed the Brazilian version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) and answered questions related to socioeconomic status and social network. Neighborhood social cohesion and psychological distress among caregiving spouses with or without a nearby social support network.

BACKGROUND: Caregiving spouses often experience substantial physical and emotional strain, placing them at elevated risk for psychological distress. While nearby social support networks and neighborhood social cohesion have each been linked to caregiver well-being, neighborhood social cohesion may serve as a complementary resource, particularly for those without nearby social support. However, little is known about whether the association between neighborhood social cohesion and psychological distress varies depending on the availability of nearby social support among caregiving spouses.
