The perception and production of rhyme in normal and developmentally apraxic children.

The phonological competence of four children, aged 5-7 years old, who demonstrated a cluster of symptoms consistent with a diagnosis of developmental apraxia of speech (DAS), was contrasted to that of four normal children. Four rhyming tasks were used to assess the ability of the children to both spontaneously generate rhyming words to targets and to judge the (in)appropriateness of a rhyme in both a word series and forced-choice word pairs. The DAS children revealed a severe deficit in rhyming ability across all tasks and had rhyming abilities markedly inferior to those shown by normal childr

Partner sensitivity to communication behavior of young children with developmental disabilities.

Aspects of partner sensitivity to communication behaviors of 24 presymbolic children with developmental disabilities were examined. The children were grouped according to their movement abilities (normal vs. abnormal patterns) and communication status (intentional vs. preintentional). Participating communication partners were those with whom the children interacted on a regular basis and included their mothers, early childhood special educators, and speech-language pathologists. Procedures were developed whereby the partners served as informants in order to provide information regarding (a) re

A comparison of three methods of oral reconstruction.

A protocol is presented that was designed to provide comparative data on the two primary oral cavity functions affected by surgery: speech and swallowing. Three types of reconstruction (skin grafts, hemitongue flaps, and myocutaneous flaps) and results of a series of tests given to 15 surgical patients with T2 and T3 tongue and/or floor of mouth lesions were evaluated. The patients who had split-thickness skin grafts had the best oral function results. The study suggests that tongue mobility is the most significant variable in determining post-operative speech results.

Susceptibility to auditory hallucinations is associated with spontaneous but not directed modulation of top-down expectations for speech.

Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs)-or hearing voices-occur in clinical and non-clinical populations, but their mechanisms remain unclear. Predictive processing models of psychosis have proposed that hallucinations arise from an over-weighting of prior expectations in perception. It is unknown, however, whether this reflects (i) a sensitivity to explicit modulation of prior knowledge or (ii) a pre-existing tendency to spontaneously use such knowledge in ambiguous contexts. Four experiments were conducted to examine this question in healthy participants listening to ambiguous speech stimuli.

[Clinical characteristics and speech therapy of lingua-apical articulation disorder].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical characteristics and speech therapy of 62 children with lingua-apical articulation disorder. METHODS: Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT), Gesell development scales (Gesell), Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Preschool Children (WPPSI) and speech test were performed for 62 children at the ages of 3 to 8 years with lingua-apical articulation disorder. PPVT was used to measure receptive vocabulary skills. GESELL and WPPSI were utilized to represent cognitive and non-verbal ability. The speech test was adopted to assess the speech development. The children rece

The Strange Stories test--a replication study of children and adolescents with Asperger syndrome.

The aim of the present study was to assess the ability of 21 children and adolescents with Asperger syndrome (AS) of normal intelligence to infer mental states in a story context using Happe's Strange Stories test. The participants in the AS group were compared with an age-matched control group (N=20) of normally developing children and adolescents on a test of social understanding. The test material comprised social communication such as Pretence, Joke, Lie, White Lie, Figure of Speech, Misunderstanding, Persuasion, Irony, Double Bluff and Contrary Emotions, Appearance/Reality and Forgetting.

Sex differences in intelligence. Implications for education.

Sex differences in intelligence is among the most politically volatile topics in contemporary psychology. Although no single finding has unanimous support, conclusions from multiple studies suggest that females, on average, score higher on tasks that require rapid access to and use of phonological and semantic information in long-term memory, production and comprehension of complex prose, fine motor skills, and perceptual speed. Males, on average, score higher on tasks that require transformations in visual-spatial working memory, motor skills involved in aiming, spatiotemporal responding, and

Clinical Outcomes for Adult Single-Sided Deafness Cochlear Implantees Exceeding the 5% Candidacy Criterion.

OBJECTIVES: While single-sided deafness cochlear implants (SSD-CIs) have now received regulatory approval in the United States, candidate-ear candidacy criteria (no better than 5% word-recognition score) are stricter than for traditional CI candidates (50 to 60% speech recognition, best-aided condition). SSD implantation in our center began before regulatory approval, using a criterion derived from traditional candidacy: 50% consonant-nucleus-consonant (CNC) word-identification score in the candidate ear. A retrospective analysis investigated whether SSD patients exceeding the 5% CNC criterion

Word identification in adults with mild mental retardation: does IQ influence reading achievement?

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between word identification and intelligence in adults with mild mental retardation (IQ < 80). METHOD: A standardized evaluation was administered to 67 adults with mild mental retardation. The evaluation included a psychiatric interview, the WAIS-R, and a 2-h interview with a speech therapist and reading tests. RESULTS: Causes of mental retardation were diverse in the sample, and IQ scores ranged from 43 to 79 (mean score = 64). All subjects exhibited reading impairment, including 69% with severe impairment. No subject with an IQ score under 65 was able

Sound Production Treatment: Synthesis and Quantification of Outcomes.

PURPOSE: This investigation was designed to provide a quantification and synthesis of a series of single-case experimental design investigations into the effects of sound production treatment, an articulatory-kinematic treatment for acquired apraxia of speech (AOS). The main purpose was to perform a meta-analysis of aggregated sound production treatment data in order to provide benchmarks to serve as indicators of magnitude of change. Additional analyses explored various factors influencing effect sizes and level of performance. METHOD: Effect sizes were calculated for treated and untreated i

Articulatory function after resection of the tongue and floor of the mouth: palatometric and perceptual evaluation.

Linguapalatal contact patterns and the time course of changes in contacts during utterances of/asa, ata, a sa, aca/ were measured using electropalatography (EPG). The relations between these data and perceptual scores in 17 glossectomized patients after various surgical methods were examined. The linguapalatal contact patterns produced during perceptually less distorted sounds varied with the place and manner of articulation. Patterns having very few contacts or a posterior groove produced more distorted /s/ sounds; however, types of EPG patterns producing less distorted /s/ sounds were relati

Focal cranial dystonia.

In the neurologic literature there has been a growing recognition of a syndrome of focal cranial dystonias referred to variously as blepharospasm-oromandibular dystonia, Brueghel's syndrome, or Meige's syndrome. Typically, this syndrome presents as an isolated and idiopathic dystonia of facial or oromandibular muscles occasionally prompting a referral to a speech pathologist. Our findings in a group of 10 patients with this diagnosis are presented, and the negligible effect of an intensive program of speech management for one subject is described.

A new syndrome with distinct facial and auricular malformations and dominant inheritance.

We report on a mother and son with high forehead; elongated and flattened face; arched, sparse eyebrows; short palpebral fissures; telecanthus; long nose and hypoplastic nostrils; long philtrum; microstomia; high, narrow palate; nasal speech; chin dimples; and a highly unusual bilateral auricular malformation. Intelligence and hearing are normal, and there is no "whistling" face or deviation of fingers. Although resembling in some ways the Freeman-Sheldon syndrome, this phenotype most likely represents a new malformation syndrome, either autosomal dominant or X-linked dominant.

The clinical and psychological characteristics of children with the "cocktail party" syndrome.

40% of a group of children with spina bifida were identified as having the "cocktail party" syndrome at the age of 5. In comparison to spina bifida cases with meaningful speech, children with this syndrome tended to have more severe multiple physical handicaps and to be of significantly lower intelligence. At the age of 7 there were significant differences between the two groups in school performance. Reassessment at 10 showed that almost half of the children no longer showed this syndrome, but those who retained this behaviour were grossly retarded. The aetiology of the condition is discussed

Prosthodontic rehabilitation for total glossectomy with a magnetic detachable mandibular tongue prosthesis: a clinical report.

Total glossectomy can result in significant functional impairments in mastication, swallowing, and speech. In addition to these functional problems, severe psychological problems may follow complete loss of the tongue. Placement of a mandibular tongue prosthesis obturates this large defect, increases the patient's ability to produce intelligible sounds, and assists with a return to a normal diet. Prosthetic rehabilitation can also improve the user's appearance and psychosocial adjustment. This clinical report describes a magnetically attached two-piece tongue prosthesis used to treat a patient

The contribution of polysyllabic words in clinical decision making about children's speech.

Poor polysyllabic word (PSW) production seems to mark paediatric speech impairment as well as impairment in language, literacy and phonological processing. As impairment in these domains may only manifest in PSWs, PSW production may provide unique information that is often excluded from clinical decision making because insufficient PSWs are included in speech tests. A 5-stage model of PSW acquisition is described. The model, grounded in optimality theory, expresses a reciprocal relationship between the relaxation of markedness constraints and the contraction of faithfulness constraints from 12

Long-term outcomes of surgical tongue reduction in Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Surgical tongue reduction is often performed in Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome when macroglossia results in abnormal tongue function or cosmesis; however, no published studies have examined the long-term outcomes of this procedure. METHODS: Patients older than 18 years with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome who had previously undergone surgical tongue reduction at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne underwent assessment of speech and tongue function, mobility, sensation, and cosmesis. These assessments were performed by questionnaire on 11 subjects and by formal medical and speech p

Association of Chiari I malformation, mental retardation, speech delay, and epilepsy: a specific disorder?

OBJECTIVE: The Chiari I malformation is defined as tonsillar herniation of at least 3 to 5 mm below the foramen magnum. Although Chiari I malformation is considered to derive from a mesodermal disorder resulting in underdevelopment of the posterior fossa relative to its content, evidence for a possible heterogeneous etiology also has been reported. The aim of the present study is to elucidate the relationship between Chiari I malformation and mental retardation, speech delay, and epilepsy to consider a possible specific pathogenetic background. METHODS: Thirty-five patients with Chiari I malf

Listening to MS: AI-assisted speech analysis for diagnosis and fatigue prediction (COMMITMENT).

BACKGROUND: Identification of fatigue in people with Multiple Sclerosis (pwMS) is still mainly based on subjective assessments due to the lack of objective diagnostic tools. We aimed to identify vocal biomarkers to differentiate between pwMS with and without fatigue. METHODS: This COMMITMENT trial was a prospective, observational study recruiting healthy controls (HCs, n = 20) and relapsing MS (RMS) patients (n = 50, EDSS <4.0) at University Hospital of Bern. The primary objective was to predict fatigue in pwMS by means of automated artificial intelligence (AI)-based speech analysis. An explo
