A Verbal Card Sorting Task to Measure Executive Functions.

PURPOSE: The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) is commonly used to measure nonverbal executive functions (EFs) in a variety of clinical populations. However, in some clinical populations (e.g., people with aphasia), deficits may be present in more linguistic (or verbal) domains and less pronounced in nonverbal domains. Thus, when determining possible deficits in these individuals, it is critical to assess both verbal and nonverbal cognitive abilities. The purpose of this study was to create a verbal card sorting task (VCST) to complement the WCST. METHOD: We created the VCST by modifying a c

Sentence Length Effects on Intelligibility in Two Groups of Older Children With Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of sentence length on intelligibility in two groups of older children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. METHOD: Nine children diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP) and eight children diagnosed with Down syndrome (DS), between the ages of 8 and 17 years, repeated sentences varying in length from two to seven words. Three hundred forty adult listeners (20 listeners per child) provided orthographic transcriptions of children's speech, which were used to calculate intelligibility scores. RESULTS: There was a significant main effect of

Use of Social Media Data Mining to Examine Needs, Concerns, and Experiences of People With Traumatic Brain Injury.

PURPOSE: Given the limited availability of topic-specific resources, many people turn to anonymous social media platforms such as Reddit to seek information and connect to others with similar experiences and needs. Mining of such data can therefore identify unmet needs within the community and allow speech-language pathologists to incorporate clients' real-life insights into clinical practices. METHOD: A mixed-method analysis was performed on 3,648 traumatic brain injury (TBI) subreddit posts created between 2013 and 2021. Sentiment analysis was used to determine the sentiment expressed in ea

Effects of an Augmentative and Alternative Communication Technology Decoding Feature on Single-Word Reading by Individuals With Down Syndrome and Limited Functional Speech.

PURPOSE: Literacy skills are foundational to participation in adolescent and adult life, and decoding skills (i.e., sounding out to read words) are critical to literacy learning. Literacy also increases communication options for individuals with developmental disabilities who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Yet, current AAC technologies are limited in their support of literacy development (especially decoding skills) for the individuals with developmental disabilities who require them. The purpose of this study was to conduct a preliminary evaluation of a new AAC feature

Research Note: Testing the Simple View of Reading in Adolescents and Adults With Down Syndrome.

PURPOSE: The Simple View of Reading is a well-supported framework in typical development that proposes that reading comprehension is predicted by word identification and language comprehension abilities. Although there has been some research examining relations between reading comprehension, word identification, and language comprehension, there has been little research directly testing the Simple View in individuals with Down syndrome, a population that often has difficulties with reading comprehension. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to test the Simple View model in English-speaking

Prevalence of Presbyphonia in Older Adults With Dysphonia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the prevalence of presbyphonia among older adults who report voice complaints. METHOD: We conducted a systematic search of five medical databases to identify studies that reported on presbyphonia as the cause of voice disorders in older adults. The pooled prevalence was calculated using random-effects models and presented as percentages with 95% confidence intervals (CI). The degree of heterogeneity among studies was assessed using I2 statistics. Subgroup analyses were performed to identify the sources of heterogeneity. RESULTS: Out of 764 abstracts fr

The Effect of Rating Method on Reliability of Judgments of Strain Across Populations.

PURPOSE: Variability in auditory-perceptual ratings of voice limits their utility, with the poorest reliability often noted for vocal strain. The purpose of this study was to determine whether an experimental method, called visual sort and rate (VSR), promoted stronger rater reliability than visual analog scale (VAS), for ratings of strain in two clinical populations: adductor laryngeal dystonia (ADLD) and vocal hyperfunction (VH). METHOD: Connected speech samples from speakers with ADLD and VH as well as age- and sex-matched controls were selected from a database. Fifteen inexperienced liste

Three-Dimensional Speech Profiles in Stroke Aphasia and Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE: Behaviorally, acquired apraxia of speech (AOS) is a multidimensional syndrome that the experienced clinician recognizes based on impaired articulation and abnormal temporal prosody. We conducted this study to determine the extent to which three core features of AOS-when defined quantitatively-distinguish categorically among aphasia with no or minimal speech sound involvement, aphasia with AOS, and aphasia with phonemic paraphasia (APP). METHOD: The study involved retrospective analysis of 195 participants with stroke-induced aphasia. We used three quantitative measures (phonemic erro

Self-Reported Communication Attitudes of Children With Childhood Apraxia of Speech: An Exploratory Study.

PURPOSE: Much of the research literature on childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) has focused on understanding, diagnosing, and treating the impairment, rather than examining its functional effect on children's daily lives. This study focuses on the Personal Factors component of the World Health Organization International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health-Children and Youth Version Framework. Specifically, the purpose was to examine the self-reported communication attitudes of children with CAS. METHOD: Two validated communication attitude questionnaires were administered to 12
