Whole-brain functional magnetic resonance imaging of cerebral arteriovenous malformations involving the motor pathways.

To investigate cortical, basal ganglia and cerebellar activation in patients with arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) involving the motor pathways, we studied ten patients (six male, four female, mean age 30.3 years, range 7.4-44.1) by whole-brain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in a 1.5-T scanner with the EPI-BOLD-technique. In seven cases multiple fMRI studies were available, acquired in the course of the multi-session endovascular interventional treatment. Self-paced right- and left-handed finger-tapping tasks were used to invoke activation. In six patients a super-selective amy

Prefrontal cortex hypoactivation in response to sleep-related pictures in shift workers.

Shift work can lead to mental health issues such as sleep disturbances and cognitive impairment. Neural activation in response to external sleep-related stimuli may vary according to shift work patterns. In this study, we investigated the differences in brain activity in response to sleep-related stimuli between shift-worker (SW) nurses and healthy controls (HCs), and we also assessed the relationships between sleep-related problems and brain activity. The hypothesis was that shift workers would exhibit altered activation in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) when processing sleep-related stimuli, re

Short-term vascular responses to spring and fall daylight savings time shifts.

Daylight saving time (DST) is a Western biannual time transition, setting the clock back 1 h in the fall and forward 1 h in the spring. There is an epidemiological link between DST and acute myocardial infarction risk in the first week following the spring shift; however, the mechanisms underlying the effect of DST on cardiovascular function remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the short-term cardiovascular changes induced by fall and spring shifts in DST in a convenience sample of healthy adults. We hypothesized that spring, but not fall, DST shifts would acutely increase

Rapid motor cortical reorganization following subacute spinal cord dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: Damage to the spinal cord is known to be associated with a posterior shift of the motor cortical upper limb representation, i.e. towards the somatosensory cortex. Due to missing pre-traumatic data, knowledge resulted from comparing findings between patients and healthy subjects. Here, we present a case of transient spinal cord injury resulting in a left-sided hemiparesis for 4 weeks. By chance, this patient had a pre-lesional navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) motor mapping 2 years before. Hence, nTMS mapping was repeated during the acute (after 1 day), sub-acute (af

Drilling with exoskeletons: effect of hand-arm vibration on neurological and muscular outcomes.

Exoskeletons can be used in workplaces where vibrating power tools are applied. The influence of these support systems on vibration exposure and impact remains unclear. In an experimental laboratory study, the influence of two passive exoskeletons for the upper body when working with a drill was compared to a task without exoskeletons. Vibration exposure, transmissibility to the wrist, feed force, muscle activity, muscle fatigue, posture and vibration perception thresholds were measured on 30 subjects. Vibration exposure at the machine handle was higher with both exoskeletons than without an e

Stroke Rehabilitation with Distorted Vision Perceived as Forces.

The concept of augmenting error in interactive reaching training has shown promise, but the possibility of doing this robot-free, with only visual feedback, has not been tested. Here we present very early results from a visual distortion environment that shifts the subject's cursor in the direction of instantaneous error as if it is being pushed by a robot. This clinical test asked chronic stroke survivors to visit the laboratory three times a week for three weeks as they practiced a bimanual virtual reality task for approximately 40 minutes. Results show that both treatment and control patien

[Functional state of adolescents with high and low stress reactivity under informational load].

The analysis of a complex psycho-physiological set of changes of 13-14 year-old adolescents with high and low stress reactivity under the circumstances of informational loads of different complex levels showed that the test tasks rise their level of CNS activity, the autonomic balance shift to the predominance of the sympathetic part of ANS and system circulatory dynamics stimulation. It is stated that at the beginning the rise of psycho-physiological reactivity under a tense informational load of boys' sexual maturation levels (SML) of a particular typological groups is coming up. Neuropsychological aspects of dementia of motor neuron disease: a report of two cases.

We describe the neuropsychological data from two cases of dementia of motor neuron disease. In both cases, a gradually progressive presenile dementia began prior to the development of motor neuron disease involving predominantly bulbar musculature. These data, along with the neuropathologic findings available in one case, suggest that dementia of motor neuron disease differs from that of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Both patients displayed major alterations of personality and comportment. Neuropsychological test results revealed marked attention deficits, particularly on tasks requiring sustained

Thalamocortical architecture shapes structural and functional plasticity after early sensory loss.

UNLABELLED: Early sensory loss transforms the functional organization of affected sensory systems, with regions that normally support vision or audition participating in noncanonical perceptual and cognitive functions. Such reorganization requires coordination across distributed networks. Higher-order thalamic nuclei are positioned to support these interactions through their widespread reciprocal cortical connectivity, yet studies of sensory-loss plasticity have focused primarily on cortex and first-order sensory pathways. Here, we combined structural and functional MRI in early blind and earl

The Affective and Neural Correlates of Heroin versus Cocaine Use in Addiction Are Influenced by Environmental Setting But in Opposite Directions.

Previous studies have shown that individuals with heroin and cocaine addiction prefer to use these drugs in distinct settings: mostly at home in the case of heroin and mostly outside the home in the case of cocaine. Here we investigated whether the context would modulate the affective and neural responses to these drugs in a similar way. First, we used a novel emotional task to assess the affective state produced by heroin or cocaine in different settings, based on the recollections of male and female drug users. Then we used fMRI to monitor neural activity during drug imagery (re-creating the

Heidelberg Neuro-Music Therapy Restores Attention-Related Activity in the Angular Gyrus in Chronic Tinnitus Patients.

Background: Tinnitus is the perception of a phantom sound without external acoustic stimulation. Recent tinnitus research suggests a relationship between attention processes and tinnitus-related distress. It has been found that too much focus on tinnitus comes at the expense of the visual domain. The angular gyrus (AG) seems to play a crucial role in switching attention to the most salient stimulus. This study aims to evaluate the involvement of the AG during visual attention tasks in tinnitus sufferers treated with Heidelberg Neuro-Music Therapy (HNMT), an intervention that has been shown to

Integrating Technical and Nontechnical Skills Under Pressure: A Qualitative Observational Study of Obstetric On-Call Simulation.

INTRODUCTION: Simulation is widely used in obstetric training; however, there is limited understanding of how early-stage trainees integrate technical and nontechnical skills under realistic clinical pressures. This study explored how early-stage trainees integrated technical and nontechnical skills while managing concurrent clinical demands during a simulated obstetric on-call shift. METHODS: A qualitative observational study was conducted in a simulated labor ward during a regional training day. Fourteen obstetrics and gynecology trainees (years 1 to 2) participated in a 40-minute simulated

Post-shift diagnostic insight in radiography: Incubation and the temporal extension of clinical reasoning.

OBJECTIVES: Diagnostic radiography requires sustained visual attention, rapid technical execution, and continuous evaluative judgement under conditions of high cognitive load. In practice, radiographers must integrate patient presentation, positioning, radiation safety, workflow demands, and image quality assessment in real time. Many radiographers also report that insights about positioning adequacy, subtle abnormalities, or possible oversight arise only after the clinical shift has ended. Although this experience is widely described informally, it has not been formally examined within the di

Process-level eye-movement dynamics enhance sensitivity to early Alzheimer's disease-related cognitive vulnerability.

BackgroundEarly Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related cognitive vulnerability is characterized by subtle disruptions in attentional and executive processing that may precede overt declines in global cognitive scores. Identifying process-sensitive behavioral markers capable of capturing these early alterations remains a major challenge in psychogeriatric assessment.ObjectiveTo examine whether eye-movement-derived process-level measures, particularly fixation-shift dynamics, are associated with early cognitive vulnerability in older adults and whether they provide incremental value beyond conventiona

Zoom behavior during visual search modulates pupil diameter and reflects adaptive control states.

Adaptive gain theory proposes that the dynamic shifts between exploration and exploitation control states are modulated by the locus coeruleus-norepinephrine system and reflected in tonic and phasic pupil diameter. This study tested predictions of this theory in the context of a societally important visual search task: the review and interpretation of digital whole slide images of breast biopsies by physicians (pathologists). As these medical images are searched, pathologists encounter difficult visual features and intermittently zoom in to examine features of interest. We propose that tonic a

Prototype-guided multi-scale domain adaptation for Alzheimer's disease detection.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and there is no effective treatment currently. Using artificial intelligence technology to assist the diagnosis and intervention as early as possible is of great significance to delay the development of AD. Structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (sMRI) has shown great practical values on computer-aided AD diagnosis. Affected by data from different sources or acquisition domains in realistic scenarios, MRI data often suffer from domain shift problem. In this paper, we propose a deep Prototype-Guided Multi-Scale Domain Adaptation (PMDA)

Choline and Working Memory Training Improve Cognitive Deficits Caused by Prenatal Exposure to Ethanol.

Prenatal ethanol exposure is associated with deficits in executive function such as working memory, reversal learning and attentional set shifting in humans and animals. These behaviors are dependent on normal structure and function in cholinergic brain regions. Supplementation with choline can improve many behaviors in rodent models of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and also improves working memory function in normal rats. We tested the hypothesis that supplementation with choline in the postnatal period will improve working memory during adolescence in normal and ethanol-exposed animals, a

Association of affective temperaments measured by TEMPS-a with cognitive deficits in patients with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Affective temperaments such as cyclothymia, which may be the fundamental substrates for bipolar disorder and bipolar II in particular, have been reported to be associated with abnormalities in the regions that are related to cognitive deficits in bipolar disorder. However, few studies have examined the effects of affective temperaments on neuropsychological performance in individuals with bipolar disorder. METHOD: In a six-week prospective study, we administered Chinese version of TEMPS-A (Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, San Diego-Autoquestionnair) to 93 patients with bip
