Communicative Behaviors in an Internet-Based Intervention for Individuals With Autism: Mixed Methods Analysis.

BACKGROUND: To meet the needs of individuals diagnosed with autism, internet-based interventions have been developed with a variety of objectives. A deeper understanding of the mechanisms of change may help tailor interventions to individual needs. The communicative behaviors of individuals with autism participating in text-based internet-based interventions remain largely unexplored, as do their potential relations to clinical outcomes. An improved understanding of participants' behaviors may help therapists better tailor support, promote engagement, and enhance treatment outcomes. OBJECTIVE

Clinician-led, AI-assisted clinical software development: multi-domain verification of a deployed ePROM application.

BACKGROUND: Generative AI lowers the technical barrier to clinician-led software development, but functional success and usability do not establish clinical or technical assurance. OBJECTIVE: To characterise defects that survived deployment in a clinician-built, AI-assisted ePROM application and the assurance activities that detected them. METHODS: Single-case retrospective development-and-assurance report of STUIapp, a browser-accessible application integrating six validated lower urinary tract symptom instruments. Assurance comprised structured post-hoc code audit, independent clinical rev

ETHICS IN RADIOLOGICAL PROTECTION FOR MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT.

Publication 138 defines the ethical foundations of the ICRP System of Radiological Protection based on core values (beneficence and non-maleficence, dignity, justice, and prudence) and procedural values (accountability, transparency, and inclusiveness). The purpose of the present publication is to propose a practical application of values for medical radiological protection professions. As medicine has a long history and strong culture of ethics, this publication starts by identifying the shared values, and defines a common language between biomedical ethics and radiological protection. The Triple E project: a factorial randomised controlled trial to enhance engagement with eHealth approaches to improve health risk behaviours among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Digital, or eHealth, interventions are highly promising approaches to help adolescents improve their health behaviours and reduce their risk of chronic disease. However, they often have low uptake and retention. There is also a paucity of high-quality research into the predictors of eHealth engagement, and a lack of studies that have systematically evaluated existing engagement strategies in adolescent populations. This paper describes the protocol for a randomised controlled trial which primarily aims to assess the effectiveness of different strategies in increasing engagement wit

Smoking, nicotine and pregnancy 2 (SNAP2) trial: protocol for a randomised controlled trial of an intervention to improve adherence to nicotine replacement therapy during pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking during pregnancy is harmful to unborn babies, infants and women. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is offered as the usual stop-smoking support in the UK. However, this is often used in insufficient doses, intermittently or for too short a time to be effective. This randomised controlled trial (RCT) explores whether a bespoke intervention, delivered in pregnancy, improves adherence to NRT and is effective and cost-effective for promoting smoking cessation. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A two-arm parallel-group RCT was conducted for pregnant women aged ≥16 years and who smoke ≥1

Interventions to increase vaccination in vulnerable groups: rapid overview of reviews.

OBJECTIVE: Groups which are marginalised, disadvantaged or otherwise vulnerable have lower uptake of vaccinations. This differential has been amplified in COVID-19 vaccination compared to (e.g.) influenza vaccination. This overview assessed the effectiveness of interventions to increase vaccination in underserved, minority or vulnerable groups. METHODS: In November 2022 we searched four databases for systematic reviews that included RCTs evaluating any intervention to increase vaccination in underserved, minority or vulnerable groups; our primary outcome was vaccination. We used rapid review

A Scoping Review of Fall-Risk Screening Tools in the Emergency Department for Future Falls in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Approximately one-third of adults over the age of 65 experience falls annually, with half resulting in injury. Peak bodies have recommended the use of fall-risk screening tools in the emergency department (ED) to identify patients requiring in-depth assessment and potential fall-prevention intervention. This study aimed to examine the scope of published studies on fall-risk screening tools used in the ED and evidence of associations between screening and future falls. SUMMARY: PubMed, Embase and CINAHL were searched for peer-reviewed journal articles published since 2012 that exam

Opioids and pediatric urology: A prospective study evaluating prescribing habits and patient postoperative pain and narcotic utilization.

INTRODUCTION: Few pediatric urologists believe patients require a majority of the doses of opioids prescribed to them postoperatively. Seeking a better understanding of postoperative pain and analgesia in pediatric urology patients may help reduce opioid over prescription while still adequately managing postoperative pain. OBJECTIVE: We sought to better understand: 1) the postoperative pain levels experienced by pediatric urology patients, 2) the factors that correlate with postoperative pain and number of opioids consumed following pediatric urologic procedures, and 3) the patients who do no

Clinical and Diagnostic Findings of Acute Macular Neuroretinopathy and Paracentral Acute Middle Maculopathy in the COVID-19 Era.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests an association between the infection from the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) and eye disorders. The aim of this review was to analyze the clinical presentation and diagnostic features of acute macular neuroretinopathy (AMN) and paracentral acute middle maculopathy (PAMM) associated with COVID-19 infection. The features are then compared with previous reports regarding these retinal disorders, to recognize possible specific characteristics and to assess the role of multimodal ophthalmic imaging. Adolescent and emerging adult perceptions of eating disorder severity and stigma.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders are one of the deadliest mental health conditions, yet most individuals with eating disorders never receive treatment. Previous research has explored barriers to treatment among individuals diagnosed with eating disorders, but little is known about general adolescent and emerging adult perceptions of eating disorders, as compared to other mental health illnesses, a population at greatest risk for developing an eating disorder, and a population that may be important sources of information or support for peers. METHOD: A sample of adolescents and emerging adults aged

Comparison of gastrointestinal side effects from different doses of azithromycin for the treatment of gonorrhoea.

OBJECTIVES: Azithromycin is commonly used to treat Neisseria gonorrhoeae. We compared its gastrointestinal side effects using 1 g single, 2 g single or 2 g split (i.e. 1 g plus 1 g 6-12 h later) dosing, representing our clinic's changing guidelines over the study period. METHODS: We recruited consecutive sexual health clinic patients who received azithromycin (and 500 mg ceftriaxone) for uncomplicated gonorrhoea. Each patient received a text message 48 h after their attendance to complete a questionnaire. RESULTS: Patients received 1 g single (n = 271), 2 g single (218) or 2 g split (105) do

Assessment of temporally-related acute respiratory illness following influenza vaccination.

BACKGROUND: A barrier to influenza vaccination is the misperception that the inactivated vaccine can cause influenza. Previous studies have investigated the risk of acute respiratory illness (ARI) after influenza vaccination with conflicting results. We assessed whether there is an increased rate of laboratory-confirmed ARI in post-influenza vaccination periods. METHODS: We conducted a cohort sub-analysis of children and adults in the MoSAIC community surveillance study from 2013 to 2016. Influenza vaccination was confirmed through city or hospital registries. Cases of ARI were ascertained by
