Reconfigurable Photodetection and Neuromorphic Synapse of GaSb Nanowire Heterojunctions for Visual Perception.

In this work, the wavelength-selective reconfigurable optoelectronic devices capable of autonomously switching between photodetection and neuromorphic synapse are demonstrated by constructing GaSb nanowire (NW) heterojunctions for adaptive visual perception. With an optimal growth time, the NW heterojunctions achieve stable photodetection performance at illumination wavelengths of ≥1310 nm, enabling the desirable stable near-infrared imaging. At illumination wavelengths of ≤850 nm, the obvious synaptic behaviors are observed, such as synaptic weight increases from 15.5% to 50.6% with an increa

Mechanism of enhanced salt taste perception in magnetic field-mediated/gum arabic-induced low-salt myofibrillar protein gel.

This study employed the magnetic field-mediated/gum arabic to prepare low-salt myofibrillar protein (MP) gel and simulated the oral processing of interactions between MP and mucin on the perception of saltiness. The results indicated that the amalgamation of magnetic fields and gum arabic effectively promoted the release of sodium ions, enhanced the apparent viscosity of MP, and increased its binding affinity with mucin. Consequently, this resulted in the prolongation in the retention time of MP on the tongue surface and ultimately improved the perception of saltiness. Besides, spontaneous end

Adaptive Grid Search Method Using Dynamic Step-Size Adjustment for Robot-Tissue Interaction Force Estimation.

BACKGROUND: Reliable force perception is critical in robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery. However, constraints in end-effector size and complexity of the surgical environment hamper the integration of force sensors for direct feedback. METHODS: In this study, an adaptive grid search algorithm with dynamic step-size adjustment is proposed to optimise the Hunt-Crossley (HC) model parameters for precise force estimation in robotic applications. The method continuously adjusts the step size based on real-time estimation error, thereby enabling efficient investigation of the parameter space

Hostility- and gender-related differences in oscillatory responses to emotional facial expressions.

Hostility is associated with biases in the perception of emotional facial expressions, such that ambiguous or neutral expressions tend to be perceived as threatening or angry. In this study, the effects of hostility and gender on the perception of angry, neutral, and happy faces and on the oscillatory dynamics of cortical responses elicited by these presentations were investigated using time-frequency decomposition by means of wavelet transforms. Feelings of hostility predisposed subjects to perceive happy and neutral faces as less friendly. This effect was more pronounced in women. In hostile

Self-motion perception without sensory motion.

Various studies have demonstrated a role for cognition on self-motion perception. Those studies all concerned modulations of the perception of a physical or visual motion stimulus. In our study, however, we investigated whether cognitive cues could elicit a percept of oscillatory self-motion in the absence of sensory motion. If so, we could use this percept to investigate if the resulting mismatch between estimated self-motion and a lack of corresponding sensory signals is motion sickening. To that end, we seated blindfolded participants on a swing that remained motionless during two condition

Effects of experimental and clinical noxious counterirritants on pain perception.

It is commonly accepted that application of a sustained noxious stimulus frequently suppresses the perception of pain. In this investigation, we have determined whether painful forearm ischemia suppresses tooth pain resulting from an acute irreversible pulpitis. We have also determined whether the physiological responses to toothache alter the perception of pain evoked by experimental procedures. Ten male subjects experiencing a painful toothache (group TA) and 7 age-matched pain-free male subjects (group PF) participated in these studies. During session 1, heat pain threshold and tolerance va

Hostility, social support, and perceptions of work.

The aim of this study was to determine whether hostility and perceived availability of social support are related to perceptions of the work environment. The W.W. Cook and D.M. Medley (1954) Hostility (Ho) scale; the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (S. Cohen, R. Mermelstein, T. Kamarck, & H. Hoberman, 1985); and measures of collegiality, time pressure, and job dissatisfaction were completed by 204 attorneys (159 men and 45 women). After controlling for age, gender, and other job characteristics, high Ho scores were related to lower perceived supportive collegiality at work. Low perceived

Arterial spin labeling provides a reliable neurobiological marker of autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Research on neurobiological markers of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been elusive. However, radionuclide studies of cerebral blood flow (CBF) have shown decreased blood flow (hypoperfusion) in the temporal lobes of individuals with ASD across ages and intelligence. This observation fits with current neuroscientific models that implicate temporal regions in social perception and social cognition. Arterial spin labeled perfusion MRI allows noninvasive quantification of regional CBF as part of a multimodal MRI protocol. This method is almost entirely absent from ASD research to d
