Pediatric neuro-meningeal tuberculosis leads to high rates of mortality and morbidity. Prompt diagnosis and initiation of treatment are challenging; imaging findings play a key role in establishing the presumptive diagnosis. General brain imaging findings are well reported; however, specific data on cerebral vascular and spinal involvement in children are sparse. We report the case of a 10-month-old infant who presented to the emergency department with an acute febrile meningeal syndrome, complicating a prior delay in motor development. A brain MRI, including sections through the thorax, revea

This report describes a case of a spondylodiscitis in an immunocompromised patient with an HIV infection caused by Propionibacterium acnes The patient was admitted to hospital with a sudden loss of motor function and sensation in both of the patient's legs. A biopsy taken during the first debridement operation proved to be negative for Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA and growth, but was positive for the growth of P. acnes Following a course of antibiotic therapy and the aforementioned debridement, the patient was moved to a specialised clinic for physical therapy. The patient's condition quickl

case of a patient with reported spinal tuberculosis (TB) that developed syringomyelia, a rare sequelae of the disease is presented in this report. He underwent syringo-pleural shunting for syringomyelia. After 15 years, the patient presented with recurrent pleural effusion. Diagnostic thoracentesis revealed fluid of transudative nature. Pleural fluid was positive for beta-2 transferrin. Pleural biopsy was negative for any malignancy or TB. Computed tomography scan focusing on the shunt showed that it was undisplaced. Video-assisted thoracoscopic exploration showed the distal tip of the shunt a

We report that SJL mice developed chronic relapsing experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (CR-EAE) when injected with a mixture of mouse spinal cord homogenate (MSCH), killed mycobacteria tuberculosis (M. tb), and mycobacteria butyricum (M. b) in PBS 2 months before a conventional acute experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) induction injection. The altered progression of the disease involved an accelerated but less severe acute attack and development of a chronic course with relapsing-remitting episodes. Histological examination revealed inflammatory cell infiltration and demyeli

BACKGROUND: Vertebral osteomyelitis (VO) is an infection of the spine with increasing prevalence due to improved diagnostics and aging populations. Multiple pathogens, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Brucella spp., and pyogenic bacteria, can cause VO, making differential diagnosis complex, especially in regions with endemic brucellosis and tuberculosis. Early and accurate diagnosis is essential for appropriate treatment.
METHODS: This was a single-center, retrospective, observational study performed between 2019 and 2022 in Kashi, Xinjiang.
RESULTS: In this study, a total of 319 patien

1. In the secondary and tertiary stages of syphilis without direct involvement of the nervous system the cerebro-spinal fluid yielded the butyric acid reaction of feeble intensity. The fluid under these conditions gave neither a positive cytodiagnosis nor the Wassermann test for syphilis. 2. The cerebro-spinal fluid of cases of hereditary syphilis showed a positive butyric reaction in about 90 per cent. and a positive Wassermann test in about 80 per cent. of the cases examined. 3. The cerebro-spinal fluid of cases of cerebral and spinal syphilis yielded the butyric acid reaction and the cytodi

We studied 20 patients with intraspinal tuberculosis (TB), to characterise the MRI features of tuberculous meningitis and myelitis. MRI leptomeningitis and intramedullary involvement in 11 patients, intramedullary lesions alone in 5, leptomeningitis alone in 2, and isolated extradural disease in 2. TB leptomeningitis was characterised by loculation of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), nerve root thickening and clumping (seen only in the lumbar region) or complete obliteration of the subarachnoid space on unenhanced images. Gd-DTPA-enhanced images proved useful in 6 cases, revealing linear enhance

UNLABELLED: Chronic vertebral osteomyelitis is a disease of substantial morbidity. Although uncommon to most spinal surgeons, the incidence of pyogenic and granulomatous spondylitis worldwide is on the rise. Although antibiotic therapy remains the initial treatment for most patients, surgical debridement with or without stabilization may be required for effective eradication of the disease. Indications for surgery in pyogenic and granulomatous osteomyelitis include the need to obtain a bacteriologic diagnosis when other methods have failed, the presence of a clinically significant abscess, an

Although rare, spinal hydatid disease is a manifestation of hydatid infestation. The authors present the report of a patient who presented with primary spinal hydatid disease. This disease is often misdiagnosed as tuberculous spondylitis, and thus patients may subsequently receive inappropriate treatment. The patient in this case presented, with an increasing weakness in the lower limbs, to a different clinic from an area in India where hydatid infections are endemic. The infection was misdiagnosed as tuberculous spondolytis based on evaluation of plain x-ray films, and the patient underwent a

Chemotherapeutic agents remain the cornerstone of treatment for spinal tuberculosis. The arguments that surgery is necessary for biopsy and to allow for removal of infection and its byproducts have been usurped by advanced biopsy techniques and trials demonstrating resolution of infection and most abscesses using chemotherapy. Although chemotherapy alone has been demonstrated to be effective for some neurologic deficits, those lesions that may be safely treated without surgery remain to be fully defined. Modern imaging techniques have allowed more precise diagnosis and identification of neural

This is the third known reported case in the medical literature of complete paraplegia following acute trauma in a patient with tuberculous kyphosis. Early clinical evidence of neurological recovery and the absence of a radiological fresh lesion are important indications for conservative treatment. The patient made a complete recovery. The mechanism of injury is probably both mechanical and vascular.

Radiologic examination of 43 patients revealed 47 lesions of a type which we have termed hemispherical spondylosclerosis (HSS). This term describes and includes the following essential and possible radiologic findings of the disease: 1) Hemispherical (or "dome-" or "helmet-shaped") sclerosis of the vertebra above the intervertebral disk. Thus it is a supradiscal HSS. 2) One or more small erosions of the inferior end plate of the vertebra involved. 3) Periosteal apposition on the anterior border of the vertebra along the length of the sclerosis. 4) New bone formation on the inferior end plate.

OBJECTIVE: Late-onset neurological deficits are a rare complication of spinal tuberculosis that may be caused by proximal adjacent segment degeneration (ASD) above the kyphus. The objective of this study was to report several cases of neurological deficits due to proximal ASD in patients with post-tuberculous kyphotic deformity and discuss the characteristics of the authors' corrective surgical technique.
METHODS: The inclusion criteria in this study were severe angular kyphosis due to a post-tuberculous kyphotic deformity and a late-onset neurological deficit. The cause of these deficits was

Tuberculosis is primarily characterized by pulmonary involvement, however, one third of the cases exhibit extrapulmonary tuberculosis. In this report, a case of epidural abscess due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis with primary resistance to isoniazid and ethambutol was presented. A 57-year-old male patient was admitted to emergency service with ten days history of weakness in legs, disability of walking and fever. Neurological examination revealed paraplegia of lower extremities, numbness distal to T2 disc level and hyperactivity of deep tendon reflexes indicating transverse myelitis. Laboratory

A case of multiple intramedullary spinal tuberculomas developing paradoxically during effective treatment of tuberculous meningitis is described. Serial MR imagings with Gd-DTPA enhancement studies showed initial homogeneous enhanced lesion representing myelitis or the early tuberculoma stage, which evolved to show ring enhancement with hypointense center later. Their appearance was similar to those described in brain tuberculoma. Gd-DTPA enhancement MR imaging is more sensitive than MR imaging without enhancement in demonstrating the lesions of tuberculoma and arachnoiditis. Antituberculous m
