To assess the role of virtual endoscopy (VE) in the examination of intracisternal structures and of the inner ear, we studied the anatomy of the labyrinth and internal auditory canal using the original CT slices and VE on the unaffected side in three female and three male patients, age range 3-46 years, with contralateral retrocochlear hearing loss. We also examined seven patients with different pathological findings. VE was performed using an advanced postprocessing program with high-resolution 3D data sets of CT (1-1.5 mm thickness, pitch 1.25) and MRI-CISS-3D (constructive interference in s

Since July 1997 we have operated on 23 patients with different visceral surgical diagnoses in an open-configured Magnetic Resonance System (MRI). Among them we found 7 patients with benign soft tissue tumors, 5 patients with anal fistulas, 1 patient with an abscess on the pelvic wall, 1 patient with a rectocele, 1 patient with an inoperable, restrictive oesophageal carcinoma, and 8 patients with metastatic lesions in the liver. In the last 8 patients we performed MRI-guided laser-induced interstitial thermotherapy, in one patient in an open development. We did not face any postoperative compli

PURPOSE: Ambulatory voice biofeedback (AVB) has the potential to significantly improve voice therapy effectiveness by targeting one of the most challenging aspects of rehabilitation: carryover of desired behaviors outside of the therapy session. Although initial evidence indicates that AVB can alter vocal behavior in daily life, retention of the new behavior after biofeedback has not been demonstrated. Motor learning studies repeatedly have shown retention-related benefits when reducing feedback frequency or providing summary statistics. Therefore, novel AVB settings that are based on these co

Joint attention is a fundamental cognitive ability that supports daily interpersonal relationships and communication. The Parallel Distributed Processing model (PDPM) postulates that responding to (RJA) and initiating (IJA) joint attention are predominantly supported by posterior-parietal and frontal regions respectively. It also argues that these neural networks integrate during development, supporting the parallel processes of self- and other-attention representation during interactions. However, direct evidence for the PDPM is limited due to a lack of ecologically valid experimental paradig

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Many cognitive factors contribute to unintentional pedestrian injury, including reaction time, impulsivity, risk-taking, attention, and decision-making. These same factors are negatively influenced by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), which may place children with EDS at greater risk for pedestrian injury.
DESIGN PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Using a case-control design, 33 children age 8 to 16 y with EDS from an established diagnosis of narcolepsy or idiopathic hypersomnia (IHS) engaged in a virtual reality pedestrian environment while unmedicated. Thirty-three healthy childr

BACKGROUND: To increase the ecological validity of neuropsychological instruments the use of virtual reality (VR) applications can be considered as an effective tool in the field of cognitive neurorehabilitation. Despite the growing use of VR programs, only few studies have considered the application of everyday activities like shopping or travelling in VR training devices.
METHODS: We developed a novel 360°-VR supermarket, which is displayed on a circular arrangement of 8 touch-screens--the "OctaVis". In this setting, healthy human adults had to memorize an auditorily presented shopping list

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the commonest adult onset motor neuron disease, with a peak age of onset in the seventh decade. With advances in genetic technology, there is an enormous increase in the volume of genetic data produced, and a corresponding need for storage, analysis, and interpretation, particularly as our understanding of the relationships between genotype and phenotype mature. Here, we present a system to enable this in the form of the ALS Online Database (ALSoD at http://alsod.iop.kcl.ac.uk), a freely available database that has been transformed from a single gene stor

BACKGROUND: The safe performance of regional anaesthesia (RA) requires theoretical knowledge and good manual skills. Virtual reality (VR)-based simulators may offer trainees a safe environment to learn and practice different techniques. However, currently available VR simulators do not consider individual anatomy, which limits their use for realistic training. We have developed a VR-based simulator that can be used for individual anatomy and for different anatomical regions.
METHODS: Individual data were obtained from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) w

BACKGROUND: Generally, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) require calibration before usage to ensure efficient performance. Therefore, each BCI user has to attend a certain number of calibration sessions to be able to use the system. However, such calibration requirements may be difficult to fulfill especially for patients with disabilities. In this paper, we introduce a probabilistic transfer learning approach to reduce the calibration requirements of our EEG-fTCD hybrid BCI designed using motor imagery (MI) and flickering mental rotation (MR)/word generation (WG) paradigms. The proposed approa

Motor Imagery (MI) Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) represent a promising technology for neurorehabilitation and assistive control. However, the clinical viability of these systems is frequently hindered by the inherent limitations of electroencephalography (EEG) with regard to its low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), non-stationarity, and high inter-subject variability. Standard decoding methods often fail to capture the complexity of user intention leading to unreliable performance and user frustration. This review proposes a solution to these challenges by advocating for the integration of pass

A fast pipeline based on the OPLS-AA force field is presented that enables the automated calculation of non-bonding intermolecular (dimer) interaction energies derived from a set of small organic (monomer) molecules. To calculate the non-bonding contributions, optimized geometries of the monomer molecules as well as their OPLS-AA van der Waals and atomic partial charge parameters are required. The key advantage of the new pipeline lies in its fast, highly parallelized in-memory computations without slow I/O operations, which make it possible to thoroughly process comparatively large numbers of

AIMS: To identify clinical characteristics able to predict a left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) origin in outflow tract ventricular arrhythmias (OTVAs).
METHODS AND RESULTS: We included 117 consecutive patients (training sample) with successful radiofrequency ablation of OTVA in one centre. A predictive model for LVOT origin was obtained using clinical data. The model was prospectively validated in a second population (testing sample) of 143 patients from two additional centres. In training sample, mean age was 54 ± 17 years, 72 patients (61%) were male, and 63 (54%) had cardiovascular ris

Increased inter-equipment connectivity coupled with advances in Web technology allows ever escalating amounts of physiological data to be produced, far too much to be displayed adequately on a single computer screen. The consequence is that large quantities of insignificant data will be transmitted and reviewed. This carries an increased risk of overlooking vitally important transients. This paper describes a technique to provide an integrated solution based on a single algorithm for the efficient analysis, compression and remote display of long-term physiological signals with infrequent short

Advances in computer technology have permitted virtual reality images of the ventricular system. To determine the relevance of these images we have compared virtual reality simulations of the ventricular system with endoscopic findings in three patients. The virtual fly-through can be simulated after definition of waypoints. Flight objects of interest can be viewed from all sides. Important drawbacks are that filigree structures may be missed and blood vessels cannot be distinguished clearly. However, virtual endoscopy can presently be used as a planning tool or for training and has future pot

Here we present a study that explores the feasibility, user engagement, and usability of an interactive system that involves the use of tangible objects with various shapes and properties to interact with virtual tasks designed for upper limb rehabilitation following a stroke. We evaluated five different types of interaction modalities, including three grasps modalities (power grasp, lateral grasp and tripod grasp) and two strength modalities. These were tested using five basic game-like tasks with a total of 20 stroke patients. High levels of enjoyment were reported, and the system overall wa
