PURPOSE: The effects of repeated topical administration of the selective beta 2-adrenergic agonist fenoterol on the intraocular pressure and on the adenylyl cyclase activity in ciliary processes in rabbit were examined in order to detect their possible causal relationship.
METHODS: Intraocular pressure was measured by pneumatonometry. Adenylyl cyclase activity in homogenates of ciliary processes was assayed ex vivo by measurement of conversion of 32P-alpha-ATP to 32P-cyclic AMP.

The relaxation mechanism of the pyloric smooth muscle is largely dependent on a nonadrenergic noncholinergic (NANC) inhibitory innervation mediated in part by nitric oxide (NO). The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of NO antagonists on the contractility of the pyloric smooth muscle. In the clinical trial, 10 anesthetized experimental rabbits were infused intraarterially with the NO synthesis inhibitor N-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA), at a concentration of 10(-4) mol/L; 10 controls received normal saline intraarterially. Dysfunction of pyloric inhibition has been implicated in the pathophysiology of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis. Normal inhibition likely is mediated by peptidergic enteric nerves and also may involve interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC). The effects of timolol on terbutaline- and VIP-stimulated aqueous humor flow were investigated in cynomolgus monkeys, with a labeled albumin dilution method.
