Ishihara color plates as a test for simultanagnosia.

PURPOSE: To alert ophthalmologists to the use of Ishihara color plates in the detection of simultanagnosia. METHODS: We examined seven patients referred for impaired vision. Evaluation included color plate testing with Ishihara color plates. RESULTS: All seven patients had simultanagnosia, with marked difficulty in identifying the numbers in Ishihara color plates despite adequate visual acuity and the ability to name all of the colors in the plates correctly. One of these patients was referred with the diagnosis of a cone dystrophy because of her poor performance on the Ishihara test. All of

Optic neuropathy as an initial manifestation of acute retinal necrosis caused by varicella zoster virus: a case report.

BACKGROUND: We present the treatment and follow-up of a rare patient with acute retinal necrosis (ARN) with optic neuropathy as the first manifestation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old male patient first presented with reduced vision and optic neuropathy in his right eye. After 20 days, the vision in the left eye decreased, and the slit-lamp examination showed no remarkable changes in the anterior segment. The right eye showed 2 + cells and flares in the anterior chamber. The iris texture was good, the pupils were round (light reflex), the crystalline lens was slightly opaque, and the vitreou

Vision screening of individuals with severe or profound mental retardation.

A vision screening program was established at a regional center for individuals with severe or profound mental retardation. The visual acuity measure used was the acuity card procedure, a type of forced-choice preferential looking. Acuity values were evaluated in terms of test-retest reliability as well as inter- and intraobserver reliability. Acuity results compared favorably to those obtained in less compromised populations, and we conclude that the acuity card procedure is a useful screening tool for this population. Suggestions for its application in evaluating functional vision were also

Effects of developmental exposure to methyl mercury on spatial and temporal visual function in monkeys.

Detailed characterization of several aspects of visual function was made in two groups of monkeys exposed developmentally to methyl mercury. One group of monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) was dosed from birth onward with 50 micrograms/kg/day of mercury as methyl mercury. Another group was exposed in utero by dosing the mother with 10, 25, or 50 micrograms/kg/day of mercury as methyl mercury, and postnatally until 4.0-4.5 years of age with the same dose the mother had received. Spatial and temporal visual function was tested in both groups. Spatial visual deficits observed in the group dosed beginn

Acute Unilateral Vision Loss in a 61-Year-Old Woman: Distinguishing Non-arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION) From Optic Neuritis and Papilledema.

Within the population over age 50, non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) represents a primary etiology for acute, unilateral visual impairment. It shares common features with conditions like optic neuritis and papilledema, making accurate diagnosis difficult. A 61-year-old woman came to AKFA Medline University Hospital with sudden, painless vision loss in her left eye that began four days prior. Her medical history included high blood pressure. An eye examination revealed swelling of the optic disc with blurred edges and decreased vision in her left eye. Evaluation via optic

Clinical efficacy of femtosecond laser-assisted phacoemulsification in diabetic cataract patients.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic patients with cataracts encounter specific difficulties during cataract surgery due to alterations in microcirculation, blood supply, metabolism, and the microenvironment. Traditional phacoemulsification may not fully tackle these issues, especially in instances with substantial preoperative astigmatism. The utilization of femtosecond laser-assisted phacoemulsification, in conjunction with Toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, offers a potentially more efficient strategy. This research seeks to evaluate the efficacy and possible complications of this approach in diabe

Case report: Cilioretinal artery occlusion combined with central retinal vein occlusion as the initial presentation of pulmonary arterial hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is characterized by elevated pulmonary artery pressure and vascular resistance, leading to systemic venous hypertension and potential right heart failure. These elevated pressures can extend to ocular veins, resulting in complications such as central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). This case report highlights a rare instance of CRVO combined with cilioretinal artery occlusion (CilRAO), an uncommon ocular manifestation associated with PAH. CASE PRESENTATION: A 13-year-old girl with a history of surgically repaired ventricular septal defect prese

Perceptual relearning of binocular fusion after hypoxic brain damage: four controlled single-case treatment studies.

OBJECTIVE: Hypoxic brain damage is characterized by widespread, diffuse-disseminated brain lesions, which may cause severe disturbances in binocular vision, leading to diplopia and loss of stereopsis, for which no evaluated treatment is currently available. The study evaluated the effects of a novel binocular vision treatment designed to improve binocular fusion and stereopsis as well as to reduce diplopia in patients with cerebral hypoxia. METHOD: Four patients with severely reduced convergent fusion, stereopsis, and reading duration due to hypoxic brain damage were treated in a single-subje

Anatomic and functional correlation of frequency-doubling technology perimetry (FDTP) in multiple sclerosis.

To study the correlation between the results of frequency-doubling technology perimetry (FDTP), visual function (visual acuity, contrast vision, standard automated perimetry (SAP)) and the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) throughout the course of multiple sclerosis (MS). Sixty-six eyes of thirty-three patients suffering from MS were chosen. Thirty-five eyes had a previous history of optic neuritis (ON group) and thirty-one eyes had no previous history of optic neuritis (non-ON group). The FDTP was performed with the N-30 screening program. Visual acuity was determined with the

Visual sensorial preference delays balance control compensation after vestibular schwannoma surgery.

BACKGROUND: Balance control performance after vestibular schwannoma surgical removal follows a course that is characterised by a deterioration in postural performance immediately after unilateral vestibular deafferentation (uVD) and a recovery process (vestibular compensation). However, sensory strategies for balance vary during tumoral growth, which could lead to differences in the preferential use of sensory afferences. This longitudinal study aimed to assess the post-operative sensorimotor strategies of postural regulation according to sensory preference of balance control before surgery.

The illuminated high contrast macular grid: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Analysis of visual disturbances in the central 10 degrees provides valuable data for the low vision clinician. Amsler grid testing in the visually impaired can be poorly visible and it can be difficult to transcribe results. Automated perimeters will accurately map retinal defects, but the equipment is expensive and this technique is time consuming. An Amsler grid was modified using principles of luminance and contrast to improve its accuracy, and its efficacy was compared to an automated perimeter. METHODS: Eighteen visually impaired patients (28 eyes) were prospectively evaluate

Linear and Non-linear Dynamic Methods Toward Investigating Proprioception Impairment in Non-specific Low Back Pain Patients.

Central nervous system (CNS) uses vision, vestibular, and somatosensory information to maintain body stability. Research has shown that there is more lumbar proprioception error among low back pain (LBP) individuals as compared to healthy people. In this study, two groups of 20 healthy people and 20 non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) participants took part in this investigation. This investigation focused on somatosensory sensors and in order to alter proprioception, a vibrator (frequency of 70 Hz, amplitude of 0.5 mm) was placed on the soleus muscle area of each leg and two vibrators were pla
