Consequences of prenatal stress on mother-young relationships are well-documented in altricial mammals but less so in precocial mammals. In this study, we investigated the effects of unpredictable aversive events on maternal behavior and mutual mother-young recognition in pregnant ewes while accounting for modulatory effects of ewe reactivity. From a population of 120 Romane-breed ewes, we selected 20 high-responsive (HR) and 20 low-responsive (LR) ewes according to pre-mating reactivity assessed in isolation tests. Over the final third of pregnancy, 10 HR ewes and 10 LR ewes were exposed dail

Drug intake is known to be under the influence of social context. We have recently shown that presence of a peer influences drug intake in both rats and humans. Whether or not social acoustic communications between the peers play a role during cocaine or sucrose self-administration (SA) was investigated here using playback of ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) at 50 and 22 kHz, conveying, respectively, positive and negative internal affective states in adult rats. To assess the neurobiological substrate of a potential USV influence on drug and food intake, we tested the effects of subthalamic nuc

Auditory neurobiology has benefited significantly from ethological approaches using acoustic communication signals. Developing an ethological model in a genetically manipulable system such as the mouse would enhance the ability to investigate the processing, learning, and recognition of sounds. Characterizing the basic acoustic structure of mouse vocalizations would help lay a foundation for such a future study. Towards this goal, ultrasound vocalizations emitted by isolated mouse pups and pairs of adult males and females have been digitally recorded and examined. Previous work suggests that t

Ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) are widely studied in mice and rats, and in case of rats, the bulk of empirical evidence is based on outbred rats, which in most studies belong to either Long Evans, Sprague-Dawley or Wistar stocks. It is known that these stocks can differ in terms of specific brain variables and also behaviorally, but there is only few evidence so far showing whether these stocks behave in similar or substantially different ways in paradigms which are often used to study USV. Therefore, we have started a larger series of comparative studies, where we analyzed different classes o

We studied the behavioural response of European starlings to a socially mediated predation event. Adult starlings were exposed to either a video of a flock attacked by a peregrine falcon or a video of a flock not under attack. We investigated whether the social condition affected the anti-predator response under the hypothesis that in such a gregarious species singletons would increase their anti-predator behaviour more than individuals in groups, to compensate for potential increased risk. The video of the flock under attack caused an increase in immobility and vigilance, more marked in singl

The crystallized structure of adult zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) song is modifiable if sensory feedback is altered during sound production. Such song plasticity has been studied by examining acoustic modifications to the motif; however, the underlying changes to the vocal motor patterns of these acoustic modifications have not been addressed. Adult birds in two age categories (young=90-120 days or middle aged 150-250 days) that sang crystallized song were used in the experiment. Vocal motor patterns were monitored by recording respiratory air sac pressure before, during, and after song pl

In order to characterize the brain stem circuitry that produces vocalization, the activities of brain stem respiratory neurons were recorded extracellularly during vocalization induced by electrical stimulation of the periaqueductal gray in decerebrate cats. After the onset of stimulation, the respiratory rhythm ceases, and a preparatory inspiration is induced. Following this initial inspiration, vocalization characterized by increased activities of the intrinsic laryngeal adductor and the major expiratory muscles is induced. During vocalization, most of the dorsal respiratory group inspirator

BACKGROUND: Older adults are more prone to develop systemic dehydration. Systemic dehydration has implications for vocal fold biology by affecting gene and protein expression. The objective of this study was to quantify vocal fold protein changes between two age groups and hydration status, and to investigate the interaction of age and hydration status on protein expression, which has not been investigated in the context of vocal folds before. Comparative proteomics was used to analyze the vocal fold proteome of 6.5-month-old and > 3-year-old rabbits subjected to water ad libitum or water volu

Basic lung and heart ultrasound examination combined with chest X-ray (TUSX) is currently considered to be very useful for differentiation of asthma, chronic bronchitis and laryngeal paralysis from other diseases with dyspnea/coughing. Among 252 client-owned animals with persistent dyspnea/cough/noisy breathing, in 197 of them: pulmonary edema, pneumonia, lung cancer, free pleural fluid, pneumothorax, lung contusion or heart disease were diagnosed. The remaining 55 animals (42 dogs and 13 cats) were diagnosed with asthma (in 13 cats), chronic bronchitis (in 37 dogs) and laryngeal paralysis (in

BACKGROUND: Late-onset laryngeal paralysis (LoLP) is an idiopathic disease of older dogs, and is common in the Labrador Retriever. Owner perspective of how LoLP affects their pet's quality of life (QOL), the degree to which LoLP is perceived to be a life-limiting disease, and how a glottic opening procedure affects these perceptions is not known.
OBJECTIVES: (a) To determine owner's perception of late-onset laryngeal paralysis (LoLP) with respect to their dog's QOL; (b) To determine whether LoLP is considered by owners to be a life-limiting disease; (c) To evaluate whether a glottic opening p

OBJECTIVES: Decreasing the closing speed of the vocal folds can reduce loudness and energy in the higher frequency harmonics, resulting in reduced voice quality. Our aim was to study the correlation between higher frequencies and the intraglottal vorticity (which contributes to rapid closing by producing transient negative intraglottal pressures).
METHODS: Using six excised canine larynges (three with symmetric and three with asymmetric, periodic vocal fold motion), intraglottal vorticity was calculated from 2D velocity fields measured using particle imaging velocimetry.
RESULTS: There is a

BACKGROUND: The larynx is an amazingly versatile musculocartilaginous organ with complex sensory and motor responsibilities which allow functional coordination of the upper aerodigestive tract.
REVIEW SUMMARY: Phylogeny, anatomy, and function of the larynx are reviewed. The major laryngeal responsibilities are phonation, deglutition, control of respiration, and airway protection. Although phonation is the least important laryngeal function for survival, it is possibly the most "human" function, and special attention is paid to the mechanism of the human voice. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Much clinical research on laryngeal airflow has assumed that airflow is unidirectional. This review will summarize what additional knowledge can be obtained about vocal fold vibration and voice production by studying rotational motion, or vortices, in laryngeal airflow.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent work suggests two types of vortices that may strongly contribute to voice quality. The first kind forms just above the vocal folds during glottal closing, and is formed by flow separation in the glottis; these flow separation vortices significantly contribute to rapid closing of the g

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify a panel of sensory nerves capable of eliciting an evoked glottic closure reflex (GCR) and to quantify the glottic closing force (GCF) of these responses in a porcine model.
METHODS: In 5 pigs, the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (iSLN) and the trigeminal, pharyngeal plexus, glossopharyngeal, radial, and intercostal nerves were surgically isolated and electrically stimulated. During stimulation of each nerve, the GCR was detected by laryngeal electromyography and the GCF was measured with a pressure transducer.
RESULTS: The onl
