We report the case of a male, 80-year-old resident in the City of Buenos Aires, with a diagnosis of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) during a countrywide dengue outbreak, from January to May 2009. The patient had a chronic lymphocytic leukemia treated with chlorambucil, prostate cancer (hormone therapy and radiotherapy) and images consistent with bone metastases. Cerebrospinal fluid examination showed pleocytosis with a predominance of mononuclear cells and high protein concentration. On the basis of our personal experience of a recent series of 46 patients, and of a review of the literature, several conclusions can be drawn. Particulate matter (PM)-associated metals can contribute to adverse cardiopulmonary effects following exposure to air pollution. The aim of this study was to investigate how variation in the composition and size of ambient PM collected from two distinct regions in Mexico City relates to toxicity differences. Male Wistar Kyoto rats (14 wk) were intratracheally instilled with chemically characterized PM10 and PM2.5 from the north and PM10 from the south of Mexico City (3 mg/kg). Both water-soluble and acid-leachable fractions contained several metals, with levels generally higher in PM10 South.

OBJECTIVE: Nitric oxide bioavailability may limit the occurrence or severity of acute vaso-occlusive episodes in patients with sickle cell disease. Because sepsis is frequently involved in the initiation of vaso-occlusive crisis and acute chest syndrome, we designed the present study in transgenic (SAD) sickle cell mice to investigate whether acute infectious peritonitis affects the enzymatic balance (nitric oxide synthases/arginases) that governs lung nitric oxide production.
