ABSTRACT A man was accidentally immersed in hot acidic trivalent chromium sulphate solution but none was swallowed. The clinical course was dominated by burns, intravascular haemolysis, and acute renal failure. Blood concentrations of chromium were measured during treatment and tissue concentrations were measured at death. Exchange transfusion reduced blood chromium concentrations by two-thirds. The total quantities of chromium absorbed and removed by various routes were calculated. In-vitro studies showed that the chromium solution did not directly cause haemolysis.

An in vivo intestinal perfusion technique was used to measure the absorption rates of five Cr compounds in black ducks. Cr was absorbed from saline solutions of KCr(SO4)2 and CrO3 at a rate about 1.5 to 2.0 times greater than from solutions of Cr, Cr(NO3)3, and Cr(C5H7O2)3. These results suggest the ionic form of Cr in solution may be an important factor in determining absorption of Cr compounds from the small intestine.

Net fluid absorption (JV) was studied in isolated, perfused snake (Thamnophis spp.) proximal renal tubules. With standard (150 mmol/liter Na+) bicarbonate-buffered Ringer in perfusate and standard Ringer plus dextran (4 g/100 ml) in bath, JV was about 0.9 nl min-1 mm-1. Removing dextran from bath reduced JV by about 20 percent. When sodium in perfusate was replaced with choline JV approached zero. Both the fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption (FTS-ABS) test and Venereal Disease Laboratory (VDRL) test for syphilis were performed routinely on 113 men with histories of genital ulcerations. Na234SO4 was infused into the rumen of a sheep fed a dried grass diet. 2. The digesta at the pylorus which contained 35S-labelled cyst(e)ine synthesized by the rumen microflora was collected and mixed with chromium EDTA. This material was infused into the duodenum of 35S free sheep. 3. Ileal digesta was subsequently collected and analysed for cyst(e)ine 35S and Cr. 4. The proportion of the labelled cyst(e)ine truly absorbed from the small intestine was 0-72 +/- 0-004.

The salivary ascorbic acid content of uncentrifuged saliva was significantly higher in women on account of the ascorbic acid contained in the cellular sediment. Absorbable corneal sutures of PGA monofilaments were tested in rabbit eyes. Compared to chromic collagen 8/0 the sutures were tolerated well, but the absorption time of 14.6 days is considered as being too short for corneal surgery.

Eight healthy male subjects received single 2-mg oral doses of lorazepam containing 24 muCi/mg of 2-14C-lorazepam. Multiple venous blood samples were drawn during the first 96 hr after the dose, and all urine and stool were collected for 120 hr after dosing. Concentrations of lorazepam and its metabolites in body fluids were determined by appropriate analytic techniques. Three patients are described, and they provide further evidence that deficiency of folic acid and vitamin B(12) may sometimes affect small intestinal function. Malabsorption of both xylose and vitamin B(12) returned to normal in one patient after treatment of a megaloblastic anaemia due to dietary deficiency of folic acid. Impaired absorption of vitamin B(12) was corrected by vitamin B(12) therapy in the other two patients.
