Modelling non-linearities in the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) after unilateral or bilateral loss of peripheral vestibular function.

We recorded the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) in 18 normal subjects, 50 patients with unilateral loss of vestibular function and 18 patients with bilateral loss of vestibular function. The unilateral cases had either partial loss (i.e. vestibular neuronitis or Meniere's disease) or total loss (i.e. vestibular nerve section), whereas bilateral cases had only partial loss (i.e. due to ototoxicity or to suspected microangiopathy, secondary to severe kidney disease). Tests were performed at 1/6-Hz passive head rotation in the dark, with peak head velocities ranging from 125 to 190 degrees/s. We re

The spatial organization of central sensitization of hind limb flexor reflexes in the decerebrated, spinalized rabbit.

This study was designed to investigate the relationship between the location of a noxious stimulus and the magnitude and duration of the plastic effects induced by that stimulus in withdrawal reflexes acting about the knee and the ankle, in rabbits. Reflexes were evoked in the nerves to the anterior tibial and semitendinosus flexor muscles by electrical stimulation at the toes. Repetitive, high intensity electrical stimulation of nerve trunks (sural, medial gastrocnemius, superficial peroneal, tibial, 100 pulses, 20 V, 1 ms at 0.5 Hz) was generally found to be a poor method for inducing centra

Transmission of afferent information from urinary bladder, urethra and perineum to periaqueductal gray of cat.

The micturition reflex pathway is a supraspinal pathway. Anatomical tracing evidence is compatible with an involvement of the periaqueductal gray (PAG) in the ascending limb of this reflex. We tested the involvement of the PAG in receiving urinary tract- or perineum-related information and attempted to characterize this ascending path in terms of what type of information is being conveyed. Electrical stimulation of the pelvic nerves, which carry afferent information from the urinary bladder, evoked maximum field potentials in the caudal third of the PAG, primarily in the dorsal part of the lat

Suppressive effect of vagal afferents on the activity of the trigeminal spinal neurons related to the jaw-opening reflex in rats: involvement of the endogenous opioid system.

The purpose of the present study is to test the hypothesis that via the endogenous pain control system, vagal afferent input modulates the activity of the trigeminal spinal nucleus oralis (TSNO) related to the tooth pulp (TP)-evoked jaw-opening reflex (JOR). Extracellular single-unit recordings were made from 36 TSNO units responding to TP electrical stimulation with a constant temporal relationship to a digastric electromyogram (dEMG) signal in 26 pentobarbital-anesthetized rats. The activity of 36 TSNO neurons and the amplitude of the dEMG increased proportionally during 1.0-3.5 times the th

Effects of area postrema lesion and abdominal vagotomy on interleukin-1 beta-induced norepinephrine release in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus region in the rat.

Peripherally administered interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) has been shown to increase extracellular norepinephrine (NE) concentration in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus. The present study was carried out using an in vivo microdialysis technique in conscious rats in order to examine the possible involvement of the area postrema (AP) and the abdominal vagal afferent nerves in this effect. Extracellular NE concentrations in the PVN region were measured by high performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. In AP-lesioned or abdominal-vagotomized rats, the NE

Transcutaneous electrical stimulation and vibration of neck muscles in neglect.

Four neglect patients without visual field defects, one with a lesion of the right basal ganglia and three with a right, predominantly parietal lesion, were examined with a cancellation and a copying task before, during and after neck muscle vibration, during transcutaneous electrical stimulation of neck muscles and during vibration of hand muscles on the left side. In all patients, neck muscle vibration improved task performance, while transcutaneous electrical stimulation and hand vibration had little or no effect. The present results demonstrate that the effect of neck muscle vibration cann

Large-scale reorganization at multiple levels of the somatosensory pathway follows therapeutic amputation of the hand in monkeys.

Reorganization of somatosensory cortex after peripheral nerve damage typically has been attributed to cortical plasticity. Here we provide evidence that much of the large-scale cortical reorganization that occurs after a major loss of peripheral inputs reflects the sprouting or expansion of afferents from the remaining forelimb into deprived territories of the spinal cord and brainstem. We examined sensory afferent terminations in the spinal cord and brainstem, and determined the somatotopic organization of cortical area 3b in three adult monkeys with previous hand or forearm amputation, as ve

Changes in c-fos induction in dorsal horn neurons by hindpaw formalin stimulation following tibial neurotomy.

The hindpaw was partially denervated by the tibial nerve transection in adult rats. At post-transection intervals varying from 2 to 168 days, the hindpaw was stimulated bilaterally by subcutaneous injection of formalin. The excitability of dorsal horn neurons was expressed as the percentage ratio of the number of formalin-induced c-fos protein-like immunoreactive neurons (fos-neurons) on the neurotomized (experimental) side to that on the un-neurotomized (control) side. At 2 days post-injury, a marked reduction in the number of fos-neurons was noted in laminae I-VII of the lumbar spinal cord.

Neurons in the rat spinal trigeminal complex driven by corneal nociceptors: receptive-field properties and effects of noxious stimulation of the cornea.

1. A survey of the receptive-field properties of neurons in the spinal trigeminal complex driven by stimulation of corneal afferents has been carried out. The afferent inputs to these neurons from the cornea and from the adjacent skin were studied as well as changes in the excitability of the cells and in the size of their receptive fields after thermal noxious stimulation of the cornea. 2. Single-unit electrophysiological recordings were made in pentobarbitone anesthetized rats from 54 neurons all of which were activated by mechanical stimulation of the ipsilateral cornea. Seventeen of these

Morphological study of the effects of intranasal zinc sulfate irrigation on the mouse olfactory epithelium and olfactory bulb.

The effects of intranasal zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) irrigation on the morphology of the olfactory epithelium and olfactory bulb were studied in mice with short survival times (as early as 1 day) and with long survival times (up to 593 days) after the irrigation procedure. As in several previous studies, the olfactory epithelium was completely destroyed within a few days after the ZnSO4 treatment. Within 2-4 days, the septum and turbinates were covered by a new, cuboidal epithelium, the cells of which differed significantly from any cells normally seen in the olfactory epithelium. Slowly, over sever

Ventilatory and metabolic responses to cold and hypoxia in intact and carotid body-denervated rats.

The effects of hypoxia on thermoregulation and ventilatory control were studied in conscious rats before and after carotid denervation (CD). Measurements of metabolic rate (VO2), ventilation (V), shivering intensity (SI), and colonic temperature (Tc) were made in groups of eight rats subjected to three protocols. In protocols 1 and 2, at ambient temperature (Ta) of 25 and 5 degrees C, respectively, rats were exposed to normoxia and hypoxia [inspired O2 fraction (FIO2) 0.13-0.11]. In protocol 3, Ta was decreased from 25 to 5 degrees C in 30-min steps of 5 degrees C. Recordings were made in norm

The organization of the thalamocortical connections of the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus in the rat, related to the ventral forebrain-prefrontal cortex topography.

The medial and central segments of the mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus (MD) receive afferents from the ventral forebrain, including the piriform cortex, the ventral pallidum, and the amygdaloid complex. Because MD is reciprocally interconnected with prefrontal and agranular insular cortical areas, it provides a relay of ventral forebrain activity to these cortical areas. However, there are also direct projections from the piriform cortex and the amygdala to the prefrontal and agranular insular cortices. This study addresses whether this system has a "triangular" organization, such that str

Cerebellar projections to the somatic pretectum in the cat.

Neurons in the somatic pretectum receive input from the dorsal column nuclei (DCN) and project to a comparable "somatic" portion of the dorsal accessory nucleus of the inferior olive (DAO). This somatic DAO is reciprocally connected with the anterior interpositus nucleus of the cerebellum. One question that arises is whether this circuitry is further controlled by an output specifically from the anterior interpositus nucleus to the somatic pretectum. Wheatgerm agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase was injected into various parts of the cat pretectum. Injection sites were interpreted

Origins of uncrossed retinofugal projections in normal and hypopigmented mice.

In albinos, the retinofugal projections to the ipsilateral side of the brain are reduced (e.g., see Guillery, 1969; La Vail et al., 1978; Lund, 1965). Although all ganglion cell types are affected, in mice the displaced ganglion cell population is the main target of the albino mutation (Dräger & Olsen, 1980). Here we tested whether this preferential effect on displaced ganglion cells is a general consequence of the melanin reduction or a pleiotropic effect unique to the albino locus, by retrogradely tracing retinal ganglion cells in normal C57BL/6J mice and in several non-allelic hypopigmentat

Ocular dominance column development: analysis and simulation.

The visual cortex of many adult mammals has patches of cells that receive inputs driven by the right eye alternating with patches that receive inputs driven by the left eye. These ocular dominance patches (or "columns") form during early life as a consequence of competition between the activity patterns of the two eyes. A mathematical model of several biological mechanisms that can account for this development is presented. Analysis of this model reveals the conditions under which ocular dominance segregation will occur and determines the resulting patch width. Simulations of the model also ex

Neural inputs from the uterus to the paraventricular magnocellular neurons in the rat.

Extracellular action potentials were recorded from antidromically identified, tonically firing cells in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of ovariectomized, estrogen-treated female rats under urethane anesthesia. Genital or somatic sensory stimuli, or electrical stimulation of the nerves innervating the pelvis were applied. Uterine horn or vaginal distension each excited 33% of the neurons tested. Probing of the cervix had no effect. Hindpaw pinch produced excitation in 39% and inhibition in 11% of the neurons tested. Non-noxious somatic stimuli had no effect. Stimulation of the u

Role of carotid chemoreceptors and pulmonary vagal afferents during helium-oxygen breathing in ponies.

Our purpose was to assess compensatory breathing responses to airway resistance unloading in ponies. We hypothesized that the carotid bodies and hilar nerve afferents, respectively, sense chemical and mechanical changes caused by unloading, hence carotid body-denervated (CBD) and hilar nerve-denervated ponies (HND) might demonstrate greater ventilatory responses when decreasing resistance. At rest and during treadmill exercise, resistance was transiently reduced approximately 40% in five normal, seven CBD, and five HND ponies by breathing gas of 79% He-21% O2 (He-O2). In all groups at rest, He

Effects of barbiturates on the inhibitory action of GABA on excitatory response of the stomach to stimulation of vagal afferent fibers in cat.

Effects of barbiturates on the inhibitory action of GABA to the hexamethonium-resistant excitatory response of the stomach to stimulation of the vagal afferent fibers were studied in cats. Inhibition of the hexamethonium-resistant excitatory response by GABA were compared under alpha-chloralose, alpha-chloralose-phenobarbital (PhB), and alpha-chloralose-pentobarbital (PB)-anesthesia in cats. The ID50 of GABA on the hexamethonium-resistant excitatory response was not significantly affected by PhB, but reduced by PB. Both picrotoxin and bicuculline antagonized the effects of GABA. The role of the glycine sensitive area of the ventral medulla in cardiovascular responses to carotid chemoreceptor and peripheral nerve stimulation.

The present study on cats anaesthetised with Althesin, which unlike more commonly used anaesthetics does not prevent reflex activation of the brain-stem defence areas, reaffirmed that carotid chemoreceptor stimulation and radial nerve stimulation can evoke the visceral components of the alerting stage of the defence response (visceral alerting response). This includes tachycardia, mesenteric vasoconstriction but vasodilatation in skeletal muscle which is not secondary to the hyperventilation. However, mild chemoreceptor stimulation which evoked but a weak hyperventilation elicited bradycardia
