[Apropos of preventive ophthalmologic interventions in the child population of compulsory school age. Authors' experience].

The results are reported of work carried out during the last five years by the Center of Social Ophthalmology, director Prof. G. Scuderi, wh … ogy in children (mostly represented by inflammatory changes of the adnexes and conjunctiva) whereas amblyopia was one of the main causes of visual deficit in children. [Prescribing spectacles to children].

Refractive errors are the most common visual problem in children apart from squinting. Indications for spectacles include amblyopia prophylaxis and treatment, strabismus, myopia and reading disorders. Objective refraction by retinoscopy is the central part of prescribing spectacles to children. A slight under correction (maximum of 0.5 dpt in cases with and 1.0 dpt without squint) can be considered in hyperopia only. Myopia, astigmatism and anisometropia must be fully corrected. Any prescription must mention "MA=PD" and "plastic lenses" as well as "high bifocal" if needed. Information to the p…

[Implantations of posterior chamber intraocular lenses in children with monocular cataracts].

Extracapsular cataract extractions with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantations were performed on 43 eyes with monocular cataracts … The main factors influencing the visual acuity are opacification of the posterior lens capsule and amblyopia. Their methods of prevention and treatment were discussed.

Pontine and extrapontine myelinolysis.

No coherent theory has been advanced to explain either the particular localization of the myelinolytic lesions of central pontine myelinolysis or their pathogenesis. However, several lines of evidence support the generalization that the centre of the basis pontis has a special susceptibility to a metabolic fault. The constancy of localization of the lesion and its bilateral symmetry are the very attributes that characterize other metabolic (nutritional) disorders, such as the assymmetrical degeneragion of the papillomacular bundles within the optic nerves and tracts in deficiency amblyopia and…

Visual functions following bilateral surgery of congenital cataracts in children.

The visual functions, before and after surgery, of 19 children with bilateral congenital cataract are evaluated. Some of the children, in spite of the poor vision before surgery and the late age at surgery, developed good vision with binocular functions. These children probably had an incomplete lens opacity in their early childhood which became completely opaque at an age at which irreversible stimulus deprivation amblyopia is unlikely to develop. Therefore, children over the age of 6 years with poor vision due to congenital cataract, on whom no information is available concerning the density…

At eight weeks, ocular alignment was normal, with mild residual ptosis and improvement in amblyopia. DISCUSSION: Sixth nerve palsy in children is uncommon but can arise from various underlying causes. In most cases, it resolves within a few months, but in severe or persistent cases, therapeutic interventions such as botulinum toxin injections can …

Cycloplegic autorefraction results in pre-school children using the Nikon Retinomax Plus and the Welch Allyn SureSight.

PURPOSE: Early detection and treatment of amblyogenic conditions such as high refractive errors and anisometropia can help prevent the development of amblyopia. The traditional gold standard for the determination of refractive error in pre-school children is retinoscopy. Difficulties with retinoscopy in pre-school children have led to the development of autorefractors that can be free of operator bias and can be used by lay individuals. The Nikon Retinomax Plus handheld autorefractor has proven to be reliable for quick and accurate assessments of refractive errors in children. The Welch Allyn …
