Seven eyes (7 patients) developed massive suprachoroidal hemorrhage (MSCH) during pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for complicated retinal detachments. The MSCH developed late in the procedure following PPV, air fluid exchange, endolaser, cryopexy, and scleral buckling in five of seven eyes. In two eyes, mild hemorrhagic choroidal detachments noted intraoperatively progressed to MSCH within 72 hours postoperatively. Diagnosis of MSCH was confirmed by echography and CT scan. Multiple scleral buckling surgeries, high myopia, aphakia, and intraocular inflammation were the main risk factors. Placement …

Two hundred forty-one eyes with a "limited retinal detachment" were treated between 1967 and 1983 by transconjunctival retinocryopexy withou … ltiple breaks in 69 eyes (28.6%). Associated clinical findings included high myopia (17%), surgical aphakia (12%), and retinal detachment in the fellow eye (27%).

We describe a novel device, Jagat and Bala Intraocular lens Supporting System (JBISS), an artificial Intraocular lens (IOL) platform that facilitates IOL fixation in an aphakic patient with poor capsular support and also facilitates IOL exchange in case of myopic shift or refractive surprise. Implantation of JBISS along with IOL was carried out in four patients and results are promising without any adverse events.

Leukocoria in children should always raise the concern for retinoblastoma. However, a variety of non-neoplastic conditions can also present with leukocoria, including persistent fetal vasculature (PFV), a nonhereditary, congenital anomaly caused by a failure of the fetal intraocular vasculature to regress during development. Classically PFV presents with features that make it easily distinguishable from retinoblastoma, including microphthalmia, retrolental fibrovascular membrane, central dragging of ciliary processes, and cataract. We present an atypical case of PFV in a 9-month-old boy who pr

Ocular and adnexal congenital disorders are those that manifest at birth and could involve single or multiple tissues. Several abnormalities have been reported in literature affecting reptilian ocular and/or adnexal tissues. The objectives of this review are: (i) review those disorders previously reported in reptile literature; (ii) present new cases; (iii) provide a basic classification of them according to the moment of occurrence and (iv) indirectly, encourage the clinician dealing with these cases to go further in their diagnosis. The authors consider that categorizing ocular and adnexal c

PURPOSE: To study the effect of posterior chamber intraocular lenses and aphakic spectacles on contrast sensitivity.
METHODS: Contrast sensitivity was evaluated in 20 patients in each group of pseudophakics with post chamber IOL (group I), aphakics with spectacle correction (group II), and age and sex-matched normal subjects (group III) using the Pelli-Robson chart.
RESULTS: The mean values of log contrast sensitivity in pseudophakics (1.665+/-0.105) and aphakes with spectacle correction (1.5075+/-0.1) were found to be statistically significantly low (t: 5.186, p < 0.001; t: 11.302, p < 0.00

We describe a new method for placing transscleral sutures when fixating posterior chamber intraocular lenses to the sulcus. An intraocular microendoscope with an 18 gauge probe is used for direct sulcus observation and needle position assessment. The straight needle of a 10-0 polypropylene suture and the tip of the probe are placed in a 16 gauge silicone rubber tube to hold them together. Fixing the needle to the endoscope allows a direct view of its tip and requires only one hand. The other hand is used to grasp the tip of the needle when it comes out under the scleral flap after passing thro

BACKGROUND: Incomplete epithelial removal from the peripheral keratectomy at the time of repeat epikeratophakia surgery can lead to interface downgrowth and consequent failure, as observed in the case reported herein. We present a modification of the standard surgical technique aimed at avoiding such complication.
METHODS: A 69-year-old white female underwent a third aphakic epikeratophakia modified to reduce the risk of epithelial interface downgrowth, which had caused a previous failure. The aphakic tissue lens, 8.5 mm in diameter, was sutured into a corneal pocket obtained at a deeper leve

The Hallermann-Streiff-syndrome was first described in 1948 by Hallermann and in 1950 by Streiff. The most common features are dyscephalia, cataract, microphthalmia, dental anomalies, hypotrichosis, cutaneous atrophy, and nanism. Anomalies of the eye include cataract, microphthalmia, nystagm, strabism, blue sclera, fundus anomalies and combined anomalies of all segments of the eye. The frequency of cataract is about 90%. Spontaneous resorption of the lens is described in about 8%. We present a five year old girl showing the typical dyscephalia of the Hallermann-Streiff-syndrome (bird face). He
