High dose vitamin C induced methemoglobinemia and hemolytic anemia in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.

Investigational use of intravenous vitamin C has been on the rise, but its side effects may be underreported. A 75-year-old woman presented with acute onset of jaundice, dark urine and shortness of breath after receiving 30 g of vitamin C infusion as an unconventional therapy for her hemifacial spasm. Diagnosis of methemoglobinemia and hemolytic anemia was made clinically and confirmed on laboratory tests. She recovered with supportive treatment and packed cell transfusion. Her previously unrecognised underlying condition of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency was confirmed mon

Will an orange a day keep the doctor away?

An 80 year old man, who relied on a home based meals-on-wheels service was admitted to hospital with non-specific symptoms, but had clinical and biochemical evidence of scurvy. Subsequently, all new admissions (n=37) to the department over a three week period were assessed for evidence of undernutrition. It was found that 73% had hypovitaminosis C, with 30% having concentrations suggestive of scurvy. There were no significant associations between level of vitamin C and type of accommodation, food provision, or age. The commonest symptom associated with vitamin C deficiency was anorexia, but ov

Detection of subclinical ascorbate deficiency in early Parkinson's disease.

From mid-October 1989 to mid-July 1990 all newly admitted residents to Bury Local Authority Residential Homes were comprehensively medically screened. In a series of 100 residents eight had early Parkinson's disease (six of them hitherto undiagnosed). Seven showed evidence of Vitamin C deficiency. Of the seven showing evidence of deficiency, four suffered from early Parkinson's disease. Of the 93 without evidence of Vitamin C deficiency only four had Parkinson's disease. This indicates a significantly higher prevalence of Parkinson's disease in the group with Vitamin C deficiency (P less than

Effect of long-term marginal vitamin C deficiency on plasma triglyceride kinetics in guinea-pigs.

A multicompartmental analysis of the plasma triglyceride kinetics after [3H]glycerol administration revealed that hypertriglyceridemia in vitamin c deficient guinea-pigs was caused by a slowed triglyceride removal from the plasma compartment.

Phosphorus application enhances cadmium tolerance in Salix caprea via physiological and anatomical adjustments.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination has pronounced negative effects on plant physiological processes, while phosphorus (P) as an essential macronutrient might mitigate Cd toxicity by modulating plant adaptivity. This study employed Salix caprea as a model to assess the effects of P on physiological and anatomical characteristics under Cd stress. The results demonstrated that plant growth, e.g., height, basal diameter and biomass, photosynthetic pigment content and net photosynthetic rate were all significantly inhibited by Cd stress. However, adequate P could alleviate these inhibitory effects in contr

Effects of vitamin C deficiency on physiology of male reproductive organs of guinea pigs.

Vitamin C dietary deficiency in guinea pigs markedly affected the androgen-sensitive parameters of the reproductive tissues--testis, epididymis, vas deferens, and accessory sex glands--and caused an "androgen-deprived effect" in these target organs. This in turn altered their internal milieu and caused changes in their metal ion profile and the morphology, motility, and density of spermatozoa in the cauda epididymis and vas deferens. The sensitivity of the vas deferens to adrenaline was also reduced in scorbutic guinea pigs, thus decreasing their fertility rate. The primary action seems to be

[Vitamin supply of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated by nephropathy].

Insufficient vitamin content in the diet is a risk factor for the development of various diseases and their progression, and drug therapy can also contribute to the development of a deficiency of these micronutrients. Data on vitamin sufficiency of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and diabetic nephropathy (DN) are needed to develop measures to improve it. The aim of the research was to compare vitamin status of patients with T2DM without DN and those with T2DM complicated by nephropathy by assessing vitamin blood level and urinary excretion. Material and methods. In a single-stage

Water soluble vitamins in chronic hemodialysis patients and need for supplementation.

Forty-three patients on chronic hemodialysis who before the present study had only received a low-dose supplement of folic and ascorbic acid were studied prospectively for one year. After baseline values were obtained in month one, increasing doses of postdialysis vitamin supplements were prescribed for the vitamins which were found to be insufficient in order to determine the minimal amount of oral postdialysis supplement necessary to normalize vitamin levels. According to our results no systematic supplement was indicated for biotin, riboflavin or vitamin B12. For folic acid and vitamin C, s

Alkaline and acidic soil constraints on iron accumulation by Rice cultivars in relation to several physio-biochemical parameters.

Agricultural production is severely limited by an iron deficiency. Alkaline soils increase iron deficiency in rice crops, consequently leading to nutrient deficiencies in humans. Adding iron to rice enhances both its elemental composition and the nutritional value it offers humans through the food chain. The purpose of the current pot experiment was to investigate the impact of Fe treatment in alkaline (pH 7.5) and acidic (pH 5.5) soils to introduce iron-rich rice. Iron was applied to the plants in the soil in the form of an aqueous solution of FeSO4 with five different concentrations (100, 20
