Heat stress in protective clothing: validation of a computer model and the heat-humidity index (HHI).

Ability to work while wearing protective clothing is often limited by rising body temperature. Peterson analyzed the combined effects of heat, humidity and workload using the Texas Model of Thermoregulation and suggested that environmental heat load imposed on a person wearing heavy, semipermeable clothing could be predicted using the Heat-Humidity Index (HHI = 0.5 Tdb + 0.5 Twb), where Tdb = dry bulb temperature and Twb = wet bulb temperature. Our study was designed to: 1) test the validity of this computer model; and 2) evaluate the applicability of the HHI to heavily clothed subjects workin

Cervical injuries during high G maneuvers: a review of Naval Safety Center data, 1980-1990.

As aircraft capable of sustaining high "G" maneuvers enter the U.S. Navy Fleet, the reported incidence of cervical injury to aircrew seems to have increased. To determine the extent of the problem, personal injury reports submitted to the Naval Safety Center were reviewed for the 10-year period from 1980 to 1990. In addition, confidential questionnaires were sent to flight surgeons supporting fighter/or fighter-attack units. The data collected were statistically analyzed. The incidence of cervical injuries, defined as at least one day's absence from the flight schedule, was computed. Other sub

The protective effect of hyperbaric oxygen on hearing during chronic noise exposure.

A series of experiments were conducted on guinea pigs to study the protective effect of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) on hearing during chronic repeated noise exposure. A 1/3 octave band of noise centered at 1000 Hz was used (126 dB SPL, 1 h daily for 5 d; or 108 dB SPL, 1 h daily, 5 d/week for 4 weeks). Some groups of animals were treated with HBO (2-3 ATA, 1 h duration) before noise exposure. The results indicate that inhalation of HBO (every other day) can markedly reduce noise-induced threshold shift and relieve cochlear damage. The mechanism responsible for HBO protection against noise-induced

Effects of temazepam on sleep, performance, and rhythmic 6-sulphatoxymelatonin and cortisol excretion after transmeridian travel.

The effects of 20-mg doses of the short-acting benzodiazepine, temazepam, on sleep, performance and pineal, adrenal and temperature rhythms were investigated in a placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover study. Ten healthy males were studied 4 d prior to flying from Sydney to London via Tokyo and Anchorage (11 time zones). Temazepam or placebo were administered at 2300 hours (local time) during the flight and for 4 d after arrival. After a 7-d recreation break in London, the subjects returned to Sydney via Moscow and Tokyo and again took five doses of temazepam or placebo. During the 5 d fol

Pineal physiology in microgravity: relation to rat gonadal function aboard Cosmos 1887.

For the first time pineal glands obtained from 5 male rats flown aboard an orbiting satellite (Soviet Biosatellite #1887) were analyzed for their melatonin, serotonin (5-HT), 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5-HIAA), and calcium content. In addition, plasma 5-HT and 5-HIAA were measured. These parameters were compared to indicators of gonadal function: plasma testosterone concentration and spermatogonia development. Plasma melatonin was low at the time of euthanasia (lights on) and was not different among the experimental groups (flight animals, synchronous controls, and vivarium controls). Pineal

Panel on deliberate G-induced loss of consciousness: introduction.

Over the last decade, G-induced loss of consciousness (G-LOC) has been recognized as a significant operational problem for pilots of high performance aircraft in both the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy. Consequently, government laboratories have initiated research studies to learn more about the G-LOC phenomenon in an attempt to reduce its hazards. Many of these studies require the occurrence of LOC during their conduct. For this reason, animal models have been developed to use in these studies. However, even though sophisticated animal models such as baboons can be taught to perform tasks befor

Experimental verification of effectiveness and harmlessness of the Qigong maneuver.

A series of experiments involving the Qigong (Q-G) maneuver were conducted after our preliminary studies in 1986. Eighteen active fighter pilots served as subjects. After mastery of the Q-G maneuver in 5-7 sessions of training, tests at +1 Gz further verified that the blood pressure raising effect of this maneuver has the characteristics of rapid rising, minimal fluctuation and being readily maintained. The 18 subjects then underwent centrifuge tests. The tolerance to Rapid Onset Rate (ROR) (1 G/s) G-load in a relaxed, unprotected condition was 3.82 G on average; performing the Q-G maneuver, t

Effects of pre-exposures to a rotating optokinetic drum on adaptation to motion sickness.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of two different pre-exposure procedures on adaptation to motion sickness in a rotating circular vection drum. The 45 subjects were randomly divided into three groups. The control group only had a standard 16-min exposure to the drum rotating at 60 degrees/s with no pre-exposure. The incremental exposure group had two separated 4-min pre-exposure periods at 15 degrees/s and 30 degrees/s in the rotating drum immediately prior to the standard 16-min exposure period in the drum rotating at 60 degrees/s. The abrupt-exposure group had the sam

Motion sickness in operational bomber crews.

Airsickness has long been identified as a flying training issue. The present study sought to assess its impact in an operational setting. During a monthly wing safety meeting, 88 B-1B and B-52H crewmembers completed the "B-1B Airsickness Research File" questionnaire. The questionnaire responses were analyzed using ANOVA, Chi-square median tests, and multiple regression analyses. The percent of flights in which airsickness was experienced was found to be a function of crew position but not of aircraft type or the interaction of crew position and aircraft type. The degree of in-flight incapacita

Locomotion and motion sickness during horizontally and vertically reversed vision.

Locomotion and motion sickness during reversed vision were studied in ten normal subjects and a patient with bilateral labyrinthine loss. Whereas horizontal reversal produced moderate to severe gait disturbances as well as motion sickness in all normal subjects, vertical reversal failed to induce such symptoms. The patient, being free of motion sickness during both reversals, could not walk straight during horizontal reversal. The difference in the strength of sensory mismatch between both directions seemed to result from a difference in the role of vision for spatial orientation which is prod

Motion sickness severity under interaction of vection and head movements.

Vection alone, or combined with head movements, has been shown to invoke motion sickness (MS). This study's purpose was to observe how different combinations of vection and head movements influenced the severity of MS. We tested 26 subjects in a rotating sphere at a speed of 45 degrees/s, resulting in vertical yaw, horizontal roll or pitch vection. Coincidently, subjects pitched, rolled, or yawed their heads (0.5 Hz, 20 degrees). We found that yaw vection combined with pitch or roll head movements significantly increased MS, while pitch vection with any type of head movement, or head and scene

Prediction of space motion sickness susceptibility by disconjugate eye torsion in parabolic flight.

The hypothesis of asymmetric otolith function asserts that physiological or anatomical differences in the two sides of the bilateral gravity-sensing otolith apparatus of the inner ear may be well compensated on Earth, but when exposed to novel gravitational states, the prior compensatory stratagems may be ineffective, leading to unstable vestibular responses and causing the phenomenon of space motion sickness. To investigate this hypothesis, spontaneous eye torsion, a reflex governed by the otolith organs, was examined in the upright position during the hypo- and hypergravity of parabolic flig

Habituation of motion sickness in the cat.

We subjected 30 female cats to a motion sickness stimulus in three series of tests. A series consisted of five tests given bi-weekly, weekly, or daily. Each test consisted of 30 min of stimulation followed by 1 min of rest, and series were separated by a period of not less than 14 d. Retching was the dependent variable. No habituation (reduction in the incidence of retching) was found with biweekly testing but pronounced habituation was observed with weekly and daily testing. The 30 cats were divided evenly into high and low susceptibility groups based on the results of the biweekly tests. The

A double-blind placebo controlled evaluation of acupressure in the treatment of motion sickness.

We used 36 subjects in a double-blind placebo controlled experiment to evaluate the effectiveness of acupressure as a prophylaxis against motion sickness. There were two independent variables with two levels each: acupressure vs. placebo, and motion sickness high vs. low susceptible subjects. The provocative stimulus was rotation about two orthogonal axes. Signs and symptoms of motion sickness were scored both by the subject and the observer. In spite of previous reports to the contrary, acupressure provided no protection against motion sickness for either high or low susceptible subjects.

Role of histamine in motion sickness in Suncus murinus.

The levels of histamine (HA) and tele-methylhistamine (t-MH) were determined in five brain regions of Suncus murinus (suncus) and the effects of motion stimulus or drugs influencing the turnover of these amines were studied to elucidate the role of histamine in motion sickness. Shaking the animals for 2 min increased HA contents in telencephalon and diencephalon without significantly changing the t-MH levels. alpha-Fluoromethylhistidine (alpha-FMH), which is presumed to deplete the neuronal HA, tended to raise the HA levels. alpha-FMH slightly alleviated the vomiting response to motion stimulu

Marijuana carry-over effects on aircraft pilot performance.

This study finds evidence for 24-h carry-over effects of a moderate social dose of marijuana on a piloting task. In separate sessions, nine currently active pilots smoked one cigarette containing 20 mg of delta 9 THC and one Placebo cigarette. Using an aircraft simulator, pilots flew just before smoking, and 0.25, 4, 8, 24, and 48 h after smoking. Marijuana impaired performance at 0.25, 4, 8, and 24 h after smoking. While seven of the nine pilots showed some degree of impairment at 24 h after smoking, only one reported any awareness of the drug's effects. The results support our preliminary st

High +Gz centrifuge training: the electrocardiographic response to +Gz-induced loss of consciousness.

Neural control of the heart involves complex interconnections within the central nervous system (CNS). Although various CNS abnormalities and processes (acute cerebrovascular accidents, cerebral ischemia, subarachnoid hemorrhages, and seizures) have been associated with alteration of cardiac electrophysiology, the effect of +Gz-induced loss of consciousness (G-LOC) on autonomic control of the heart is unknown. From a group of 59 healthy subjects undergoing centrifuge high +Gz training, 15 suffered G-LOC episodes. The +Gz training profiles included gradual (0.1 G/s) and rapid (approximately 6 G

You're the flight surgeon. Isocyanates are the most common cause of occupational asthma.

Isocyanates are the most common cause of occupational asthma. They are used to produce polyurethanes for the manufacture of plastics, adhesives, surface coatings, and both flexible and rigid foams. Of the several types of isocyanates commonly used, toluene diisocyanate (TDI) is the most significant commercially and toxicologically. Asthma develops in approximately 5 to 10% of workers regularly exposed to TDI. Once sensitized, asthma can develop after exposure to extremely low concentrations of TDI. Although suggestive, an immunologic mechanism remains unclear since studies vary in their findin
