Brain abscesses are local pockets of infection within the brain parenchyma, characterized by headaches, fevers, and focal neurological deficits. Here, we present a case of an eight-year-old fully vaccinated male patient who presented to the emergency department with a 1-week history of intermittent generalized headache, photophobia, fatigue, and vomiting. The patient was admitted for further work-up, with subsequent imaging revealing a cerebellar mass consistent with an abscess. Cultures from the abscess fluid grew pan-sensitive Streptococcus pneumoniaeSerotype 3, and the patient was started o…

A 57-year-old male woodworker was diagnosed with T3N0M0 intestinal-type nasal adenocarcinoma in 2021. He underwent endoscopic craniofacial resection and radiotherapy, with no recurrence for three years. In 2024, he presented with occipital headache and vomiting, revealing a frontal necrotic-hemorrhagic lesion with acute hydrocephalus, initially suspected to be a brain abscess. However, a history of cocaine use suggested brain necrosis facilitated by prior surgery. This unique case demonstrates brain necrosis directly attributable to intranasal cocaine use. Surgeons should consider substance us…

Clinical and brain biopsy or autopsy findings in six patients with Granulomatous Amebic Encephalitis (GAE) due to acanthamoeba sp. were characterized by focal neurological symptoms, increased intracranial pressure, and focal neuroradiological findings. Craniotomies were performed because of the diagnostic possibility of a mass lesion such as a brain tumor or abscess. In four patients, frozen sections demonstrated free-living amebas. GAE may present as an acute or subacute intracerebral mass lesion with signs and symptoms of focal brain disease and should be differentiated from viral, bacterial

BACKGROUND: Brainstem located abscesses are rare in the pediatric population. Diagnosis of brain abscess can be challenging as patients may present with nonspecific symptoms and the classical triad of headache, fever, and focal neurological deficit is not always present. Treatment can be conservative or a combination of surgical intervention with antimicrobial therapy.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the first case of a 4.5-year-old girl with acute lymphoblastic leukemia that developed infective endocarditis (IE) and subsequently developed 3 suppurative collections (frontal, temporal, and brains…

PURPOSE: Primary pituitary abscesses are extraordinarily rare lesions, especially in pediatric populations, with very few cases described in the literature. Here we review this rare condition and discuss its management.
METHODS: We report a case of a previously healthy 12-year-old female patient who presented with vomiting and meningismus. We review the literature on pediatric patients presenting with pituitary abscesses and the described treatments. An operative video demonstrating our surgical technique is provided.
RESULTS: Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed a rim-enhancing,

Microorganisms harbored in the oral cavity have long been recognized to cause systemic disease with a well known mechanism of spread via the blood stream. Different factors, including the presence of periodontal disease, the number of dental extractions or the duration of dental surgery have an influence on the risk of bacteremia. Infectious endocarditis is classically cited, but there are other potential problems including brain abscess, meningitis, lung or lie abscess, and even for some authors, a risk of thrombotic heart disease. It is important to keep in mind that some of these focal infe…

Amoebiasis, a gastrointestinal infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica, is the third leading cause of mortality worldwide among parasitic infections with over 100,000 deaths annually. Apart from dysentery, it can manifest as extraintestinal disease, most commonly liver abscess, and rarely pulmonary, cardiac, and brain involvement. This case demonstrates the challenging management of a complicated amoebic liver abscess (ALA) with pulmonary involvement and venous thromboembolism. A 26-year-old male presenting with pleuritic right hypochondriac pain, fever, and dyspnoea underwent hepatobiliary

BACKGROUND: Experimental meningitis with Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes 1, 3, and 9 has resulted in pronounced differences in disease severity, but clinical meningitis studies addressing serotype-related differences in case-fatality rates are lacking.
METHODS: Study subjects were Danish patients with pneumococcal meningitis due to serotype 1 (n=38), 3 (n=69), or 9V (n=59) during 1990-2002 for whom clinical information was available. The 3 serotypes were tested for brain damage and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) inflammatory kinetics in 2 experimental models of meningitis.

Pituitary abscess is a rare intracranial infection that can be life-threatening if not appropriately diagnosed and treated upon presentation. The most common presenting symptoms include headache, anterior pituitary hypofunction, and visual field disturbances. Brain imaging with either computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging usually reveals intra- or suprasellar lesion(s). Diagnosis is typically confirmed intra- or postoperatively when pathological analysis is done. Clinicians should immediately start empiric antibiotics and request a neurosurgical consult when pituitary abscess is su

We present the case of a 32-year-old woman who developed recurrent thunderclap headaches, initially misattributed to migraine, ultimately diagnosed as reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) based on multifocal arterial narrowing and clinical presentation. Her course was complicated by right occipital intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and later by formation of a cerebral abscess at the prior hemorrhagic site. Cultures revealed methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus without a clear systemic infectious source; dermatologic seeding was suspected. This case highlights two uncommon f

Neonatal meningitis is a serious disease with significant mortality and morbidity. Its signs and symptoms are subtle, non-specific, atypical or absent. Cephalohaematoma is frequent in newborns and complications are uncommon, including local infection after haematogenous spread in the setting of bacteraemia or meningitis with a possibility of osteomyelitis, epidural abscess and subdural empyema. We report the case of a late preterm newborn, with an unremarkable pregnancy, born by vacuum-assisted vaginal delivery that presented in the fifth day of life with irritability, fever and grunting. Pott's Puffy tumor is a rare clinical entity characterized by subperiosteal abscess associated with osteomyelitis. It is usually seen as a complication of frontal sinusitis or trauma predominantly in the adolescent age group. Pott's Puffy tumor can be associated with cortical vein thrombosis, epidural abscess, subdural empyema, and brain abscess. The cause of vein thrombosis is explained by venous derange of the frontal sinus, which occurs through diplopic veins, which communicate with the dural venous plexus; septic thrombi can potentially evolve from foci within the frontal sinus and propaga…

INTRODUCTION: Chronic otitis media is the most common cause of otologic complications. A simultaneous occurrence of extracranial and intracranial otologic complications is rare in clinical practice. In this paper, we are presenting a patient with exacerbation of chronic otitis media and associated otologic complications: peripheral facial nerve palsy and subdural cerebral abscess.
CASE REPORT: A patient aged 56 who has suffered from chronic otitis media during the past 37 years, was admitted at the Clinic of Otorhinolaryngology due to worsening of the underlying disease. The clinical examinat
