Tissue transglutaminase (tTG) autoantibodies decline after gluten-free diet in patients with coeliac disease. We tested the hypothesis that gluten-free diet-induced change in tTG autoantibody levels affects subsets of peripheral blood lymphocytes. Peripheral blood was obtained from 20 children with biopsy-proven active coeliac disease. STUDY DESIGN: During a period of 5 years (1998-2002), 125 lymphoma cases consisting of 78 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), 38 Hodgkin's disease (HD) and 9 NHL/HD were diagnosed by fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology. In FNA smears of NHL, the 2 most commonly used antibodies for immunocytochemical staining were CD3 (29 cases) and CD20 (33 cases). T cells are most likely to play an important role in the pathogenesis of WG, and recently a predominant Th1 pattern of immune response has been demonstrated in granulomatous inflammation. Since the expression of costimulatory molecules has a significant impact on the cytokine profile and proliferation response of T cells, the goal of this study was to characterize the expression of costimulatory molecules (CD28, CTLA-4 (CD152), B7-1 (CD80), B7-2 (CD86)) on T cells, monocytes and B cells in WG, and to correlate the findings with clinical parameters such as disease activity, extent and therapy.

The present study is the first to report elevated serum levels of soluble (s)VCAM-1 in B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (B-CLL). A large cohort of 106 untreated patients was studied. sVCAM-1 was compared to known prognostic serum markers (soluble (s)ICAM-1; lactate dehydrogenase, LDH; sCD23; thymidine kinase, TK; beta2microglobulin, beta2m). BACKGROUND: Upon engagement of the T cell receptor for antigen, its associated CD3 proteins recruit signal transduction molecules, which in turn regulate T lymphocyte proliferation, apoptosis, and thymocyte development. Because some signal transducing molecules recruited by CD3-epsilon, i.e., p56lck and p59fyn, are oncogenic and since we previously found that overexpression of CD3-epsilon transgenes causes a block in T lymphocyte and NK cell development, we tested the hypothesis that aberrant CD3-epsilon signaling leads both to abnormal T lymphocyte death and lymphomagenesis.

OBJECTIVE: Heat shock proteins (Hsps), a highly conserved class of protective cellular proteins that are produced under various conditions of environmental challenge, have been implicated as the antigenic stimulus in autoimmune diseases. Because lichen planus (LP) appears to be an autoimmune or hyperimmune condition (mediated by T cells), Hsps may have a role in the pathogenesis of this disease.
