Hand infections following penetrating fish fins or bones injuries (FFBI): a large, hospital based, retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of hand infections caused by penetrating fish fins or bones injuries (FFBI) is likely to increase following worldwide constant growth of fishery production and consumption. Because data on these infections are scarce, the purposes of this study were to describe their clinical characteristics and disease course, and to analyze risk factors for a complicated disease course. METHODS: We studied retrospectively all cases of hospitalized patients with hand infections following FFBI over the years 1999-2006 in a single medical center. Demographic data, underlying diseases,

CYPOR Variability as a Biomarker of Environmental Conditions in Bream (Abramis brama), Roach (Rutilus rutilus), Perch (Perca flavescens), and Pike-Perch (Sander lucioperca) from Lake Ladoga.

The fish liver, as the main detoxification organ, is highly susceptible to xenobiotic exposure, often resulting in various hepatopathies. The cytochrome P450 system plays a central role in xenobiotic metabolism, with cytochrome P450 reductase (CYPOR) supplying the electrons required for CYP enzyme activity. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the ecological state of a reservoir and fish health, including CYPOR levels, through hematological, bacteriological, and histological analyses. Samples of water and fish were collected from 12 littoral sites of Lake Ladoga. A total of 13

DNA Hydrogel-Based Fluorescence Biosensor Packed in a Three-Dimensional-Printed Microextractor for Direct Tracking of Free Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Wastewater Treatment Plants.

The free antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) content in water samples both inside (during treatment) and outside (after treatment) a wastewater treatment plant (WTP) is of great significance for evaluating the effect of treatment and environmental risks. In this work, a functional DNA hydrogel was packed in a three-dimensionally (3D)-printed tube as a fluorescence biosensor-integrated microextractor to directly extract and track free ARGs from water environments and biological samples. Combined with the strand displacement amplification reaction and the 3D-printed tube in respect of its spatial

Intestinal Parasite Community Dynamics in the Critically Endangered Chinese Alligator (Alligator sinensis): Multifactorial Insights From 18S rRNA Amplicon Sequencing.

The intestinal parasite communities of vertebrates are shaped by complex interactions among biological, environmental, and anthropogenic factors. However, such dynamics remain poorly characterized in endangered the Chinese Alligator (Alligator sinensis). Here, we conducted a high-throughput 18S rRNA amplicon survey of intestinal parasites in 149 fecal samples from the critically endangered Chinese alligators, spanning two geographic localities, four feeding regimens, three developmental stages, and 3 months. We identified 1524 eukaryotic parasite OTUs and 6606 nematode OTUs, revealing signific

Preparation and Immunological Efficacy Assessment of an Oral Nanovaccine with CyHV-3 ORF57 Recombinant Protein.

Koi herpesvirus disease (KHVD), caused by Cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV-3), is highly contagious and lethal, with no specific therapeutics available. Vaccine development is the most promising control strategy. In this study, the structural protein ORF57 of CyHV-3 was used as antigen, and chitosan (CS) combined with carboxymethyl chitosan (NOCMS) served as delivery carriers to construct an oral nanovaccine (CS-NOCMS/CyHV-3 ORF57) via ionotropic crosslinking. The preparation was optimized by single-factor and response surface methodology. The nanovaccine was characterized for physicochemical prop

Molecular and functional identification of a LC3C homolog in large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea).

Autophagy is a conserved cellular process in response to stress that sustains normal cell growth by degrading and recycling unnecessary cytosolic components in autophagosomes and autolysosomes. Microtubule-associated protein 1-light chain 3, MAP1LC3 or LC3, is a major autophagosome component and reliable autophagy marker. In humans, there exist three LC3 orthologues, LC3A, LC3B, and LC3C. To date, only two types of LC3 orthologues, LC3A and LC3B, have been recognized in fish species. This study identified a LC3C (LcLC3C) gene in the large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea). The deduced LcLC3

Characterization of a novel lytic bacteriophage SPuP2 against Shewanella putrefaciens and its efficacy in biofilm disruption: A promising antimicrobial strategy.

Shewanella putrefaciens (S. putrefaciens) is a major spoilage bacterium in aquatic products, capable of forming persistent biofilms that accelerate spoilage and pose potential food safety risks. However, conventional preservation strategies are often ineffective in preventing or removing biofilms. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop eco-friendly, and safe control strategy. This study aimed to isolate and characterize a novel lytic phage with potent antibiofilm activity against S. putrefaciens and to evaluate its potential as a biocontrol agent in aquatic products. The phage, designat

Comparative hepatotoxicity of HFPO-TA and PFOA in Opsariichthys bidens: Greater liver injury induced by the PFOA alternative.

Hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid (HFPO-TA) has been introduced as a potential alternative to the environmentally persistent perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Despite its increasing application, there remains a substantial knowledge gap regarding its toxicological profile, especially in freshwater species such as the hook snout carp (Opsariichthys bidens Günther). To address this concern, we systematically evaluated and compared the hepatic toxicity of HFPO-TA and PFOA in O. bidens under uniform exposure durations for 60 days. HFPO-TA demonstrated a significantly greater capacity to induce li

Functional studies and synchrotron FTIR biochemical signatures reveal the potential of protein nanoparticles as a VHS virus vaccine.

As an innovative strategy towards new biomaterials for fish vaccine development, we have generated the C-terminal half of the viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) G protein as nanostructured bacterial inclusion bodies (IBs). IBs offer a slow release of biologically active, native and native-like proteins from a protective scaffold based on a nontoxic amyloid network. These nanoscale materials are an attractive type of vaccine design for aquaculture, being cheap, scalable and stable in vivo without the need for encapsulation, unlike soluble proteins. The bacterial remnants carried in IBs

Occurrence, bioaccumulation, and ecological and health risks of Cd, Sn, Hg, and Pb compounds in shrimp and fish from aquaculture ponds.

Aquaculture organisms may accumulate metals to induce health risks. Compared with the focus on total contents, chemical-specific risk assessment makes reasonable but is rare. Herein, we elucidated occurrence of twelve metal compounds in shrimp and fish (edible muscle, one of major metal-containing and generally targeted organs), water, sediment, and feedstuff from two aquaculture ponds in Zhejiang Province (one of the major aquatic production and consumption areas). We detected Cd(II) (0.6 -71.4 μg kg-1 in 100 % prawn but 63 % fish), methylmercury (MeHg, 0.5 -7.1 μg kg-1 in 100 % fish but 61 %

Parasitological survey of farmed Murray Cod (Maccullochella peelii) in an aquaculture setting.

The Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii) is Australia’s largest freshwater fish and an iconic species of cultural, recreational, and economic importance. While parasites have historically been reported as significant threats in Murray cod aquaculture, recent data on their occurrence remain limited. This study investigated the parasites of farmed Murray cod and co-occurring species in an aquaculture facility, with the aim of identifying parasite burdens and assessing potential risks to fish health and food safety. A total of 50 Murray cod and 47 co-occurring species, including common carp (Cyprin

Innate immune response of snakehead fish to Indian strain of snakehead rhabdovirus (SHRV-In) infection and the infectivity potential of the virus to other freshwater fishes.

A new virus known as snakehead rhabdovirus (SHRV-In) was discovered in South India in striped snakehead (Channa striata) that had hemorrhagic patches and cutaneous ulcerations. The virus is the most potentially harmful pathogen of snakehead because it could cause 100% mortality within 5 days. The goal of the current investigation was to evaluate the infectivity of rhabdovirus in freshwater fishes and to analyze the immune response in snakehead fish after challenge with SHRV-In. The infectivity study of SHRV-In against three freshwater fish such as tilapia, grass carp and loach showed that the

Evolutionary mechanisms and practical significance of reproductive success and clonal diversity in unisexual vertebrate polyploids.

Unisexual reproduction is generally relevant to polyploidy, and unisexual vertebrates are often considered an evolutionary "dead end" due to the accumulation of deleterious mutations and absence of genetic diversity. However, some unisexual polyploids have developed strategies to avoid genomic decay, and thus provide ideal models to unveil unexplored evolutionary mechanisms, from the reproductive success to clonal diversity creation. This article reviews the evolutionary mechanisms for overcoming meiotic barrier and generating genetic diversity in unisexual vertebrates, and summarizes recent r

ROS/ER stress contributes to trimethyltin chloride-mediated hepatotoxicity; Tea polyphenols alleviate apoptosis and immunosuppression.

Trimethyltin chloride (TMT) is an organotin-based contaminant present in the water environment that poses a great threat to aquatic organisms and humans. The liver is the detoxification organ of the body and TMT exposure accumulates in the liver. Tea polyphenol (TP) is a natural antioxidant extracted from tea leaves and has been widely used as a food and feed additive. To investigate the mechanism of toxicity caused by TMT exposure on grass carp hepatocytes (L8824 cells) and the mitigating effect of TP, we established a hepatocyte model of TMT toxicity and/or TP treatment. L8824 cells were tre

A novel Kunitz protein with proposed dual function from Eudiplozoon nipponicum (Monogenea) impairs haemostasis and action of complement in vitro.

Serine peptidases are involved in many physiological processes including digestion, haemostasis and complement cascade. Parasites regulate activities of host serine peptidases to their own benefit, employing various inhibitors, many of which belong to the Kunitz-type protein family. In this study, we confirmed the presence of potential anticoagulants in protein extracts of the haematophagous monogenean Eudiplozoon nipponicum which parasitizes the common carp. We then focused on a Kunitz protein (EnKT1) discovered in the E. nipponicum transcriptome, which structurally resembles textilinin-1, an

Immune responses to peptides containing homocitrulline or citrulline in the DR4-transgenic mouse model of rheumatoid arthritis.

Antibodies to proteins/peptides containing citrulline are hallmarks of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). These antibodies are strongly associated with the expression of the Shared Epitope (SE). RA patients also generate antibodies to homocitrulline-containing proteins/peptides (also referred to as anti-carbamylated protein antibodies (Anti-CarP)). This study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between homocitrulline and citrulline immune responses using an established mouse model of RA: DR4-transgenic (DR4tg) mice that express the human SE. Integrative taxonomy of central European parasitic flatworms of the family Prosthogonimidae Lühe, 1909 (Trematoda: Plagiorchiida).

Species of the family Prosthogonimidae are considered the most pathogenic poultry trematodes worldwide, affecting particularly low intensity farming in rural areas. Adults of Prosthogonimus occur mainly in the bursa of Fabricius, oviduct and cloaca of ducks, geese, fowl and other birds feeding at least occasionally on dragonflies or damselflies (Odonata). We analyzed the central European species of the Prosthogonimidae, namely Prosthogonimus cuneatus, Prosthogonimus ovatus, Prosthogonimus pellucidus and Prosthogonimus rarus. We sequenced three nuclear (ITS2) and mitochondrial (CO1, ND1) DNA lo

Recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae serves as novel carrier for oral DNA vaccines in Carassius auratus.

Oral delivery of DNA vaccines represents a promising vaccinating method for fish. Recombinant yeast has been proved to be a safe carrier for delivering antigen proteins and DNAs to some species in vivo. However, whether recombinant yeast can be used to deliver functional DNAs for vaccination to fish is still unknown. In this study, red crucian carp (Carassius auratus) was orally administrated with recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae harboring CMV-EGFP expression cassette. On day 5 post the first vaccination, EGFP expression in the hindgut was detected under fluorescence microscope. To further

Effects of short-term antioxidant supplementation on oxidative stress and exercise performance in the heat and the cold.

The effects of short-term as well as long-term antioxidant supplementation on exercise performance in the heat or the cold are unknown. Based on our recent studies we hypothesized that short-term supplementation with alpha-ketoglutaric acid (α-KG) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) would decrease oxidative stress but without significant impairment of maximal exercise performance in the heat or the cold. During a 5-week period young and welltrained participants performed 5 incremental treadmill tests to exhaustion under different temperature conditions (normal: 20°C, cold: +7°C, heat: +33°C) a
