Carbon footprint of biomass-derived activated carbon: life cycle assessment, environmental sustainability, and carbon-negative potential.

Biomass-derived activated carbon has emerged as a sustainable alternative to conventional fossil-based activated carbon owing to its renewable origin, excellent adsorption performance, and potential to support circular bioeconomy and climate mitigation strategies. However, its overall environmental sustainability depends not only on the renewable nature of biomass feedstocks but also on greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout production, utilization, regeneration, and end-of-life management. This review critically reviews the carbon footprint of biomass-derived activated carbon from a li

From Reactive Remediation to Predictive Prevention: A Systems Synthesis of Global Soil Salinization and Sodicity.

Soil salinization and sodicity are accelerating worldwide, reducing crop productivity across more than 160 million hectares of farmland and causing production losses approaching USD 27 billion annually. Despite decades of research documenting these impacts, the extent of salt-affected soils continues to expand. Salt-affected soil degradation emerges from feedbacks among physical, biological, and socioeconomic processes that operate across scales and resist intervention when addressed in isolation. This review synthesizes current understanding of these coupled feedbacks. We trace how ion accumu

Mapping Global Research Trends on Aflatoxin M1 in Dairy Products: An Integrative Review of Prevalence, Toxicology, and Control Approaches.

Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1), a hydroxylated metabolite of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), is a potent hepatotoxic and carcinogenic compound frequently detected in milk and dairy products. Its thermal stability and resistance to processing make it a persistent public health concern, especially in regions prone to fungal contamination of animal feed. This review integrates bibliometric mapping (2015-2025) with toxicological and mitigation perspectives to provide a comprehensive understanding of AFM1. The bibliometric analysis reveals a sharp global rise in research output over the last decade, with Iran, China, an

A Global Methane Observation System to Reduce Uncertainty for Anthropogenic and Natural Sources and Sinks for Detecting and Attributing Climate Feedbacks.

Atmospheric methane (CH4) concentrations are accelerating global warming as net emissions increase. Observing systems that quantify sources remain too sparse and fragmented to detect trends-especially in remote regions where climate-driven natural emissions may be rising. We provide a framework for quantifying uncertainty reductions through the implementation of a global ecosystem-methane observing system designed to: (i) substantially lower uncertainty in sectoral and regional emissions, (ii) separate co-occurring anthropogenic and natural fluxes, and (iii) trend detection at regional scales

Intrauterine heat stress: molecular acclimation and epigenetic transmission in F1 and F2 male mice.

Heat stress (HS) during gestation poses a major physiological challenge to the developing fetus, potentially inducing long-term adaptations that persist across generations. Understanding this process is crucial for reproductive biology, as climate change poses challenges to fertility. This study evaluated the effects of prenatal HS (41 °C, 65% relative humidity) during early, late, or full-term pregnancy on postnatal development and reproductive function of F1 male mice. Additionally, the potential transmission of heat acclimation was evaluated by analyzing gene expression in the testes of F1

Trapping absorbing and non-absorbing aqueous aerosol particles using a universal 4-arm Laguerre-Gaussian mode light trap.

Absorbing aerosols, such as brown carbon (BrC) and absorbing secondary organic aerosols (SOA), have attracted broad interest due to their importance for climate and human health. The pronounced time-dependence of light absorption during aging renders the precise estimation of their impact on global warming difficult. Single particle studies of such aerosols would be very useful to better understand their aging in the atmosphere through processes such as photochemistry. Previously proposed optical traps cannot continuously trap particles whose absorption state changes from strongly absorbing to

Strategies for mitigating carbon dioxide emissions: advanced carbon capture and storage technologies.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is vital for cutting CO₂ emissions and tackling climate change. The CCS innovations of the last decades can be categorized based on the post- or pre-combustion capture, oxy-fuel combustion, and chemical looping combustion (CLC) approaches used. These techniques are primarily aimed towards capturing CO2 that would be emitted from industrial sources or power plants in separate, manicured environments prior to its release into the atmosphere. For instance, post-combustion capture can be applied to coal-fired sources to extract CO₂ from flue gases, whereas pre-comb

Regulating the interfacial water structure of montmorillonite through hydrophobic modification: A strategy to promote hydrate formation during liquid CO₂ injection.

Hydrate-based carbon dioxide (CO₂) sequestration (HBCS) within marine sediments has emerged as a highly promising strategy for long-term carbon storage and climate mitigation. Nevertheless, the efficiency of this process is hindered by the inhibition of clay hydration on CO₂ hydrate formation in marine sediments. This study develops a hydrophobic modification strategy to facilitate hydrate formation by regulating the interfacial water structure at the mineral-water interface. The in-situ formation of CO₂ hydrate and the evolution of water structure were investigated using low-field nuclear mag

Sustainable valorisation of agricultural residues into polyhydroxybutyrate and amylase using XGBoost-optimised extractive co-fermentation and its macromolecular characterization.

As food production increases globally, the disposal of agro-waste is an additional issue. However, turning this waste into products through sustainable methods could probably reduce environmental impact. In this work, the inexpensive carbon sources rice bran and corn bran were hydrolysed to produce Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and Enzyme (Amylase) by extractive Co-fermentation. This work is advanced by the synthesis, extraction, and characterization of PHB produced by the strain Priestia megaterium isolated from soil. Vulnerable microbial communities in Atacama-Altiplano wetlands: modern analogs of ancient ecosystems with implications for sustainability and conservation.

The Altiplano-Puna plateau lies at ∼4000 m above sea level in the volcanic Andes cordillera. Together with the adjacent Atacama Desert, it forms one of the most hyperarid regions on the planet. Wetlands are rare, influenced by hydrothermalism and, due to high evaporation rates, dominated by saline lakes and ephemeral ponds associated with salt flats (collectively called salares). Long thought to be lifeless, these environments host microbial ecosystems adapted to extreme conditions in terms of temperature, pH, salinity, ultraviolet radiation, and high concentrations of metals and metalloids, i
